This place is absolutely beautiful and a true paradise surrounded by palmtrees. The building and rooms are decorated with traditional Sri Lankan art en craft, something you don’t see that much which is a shame because it is truly beautiful. The pool area a quiet paradise with much space and there is always a peacefull spot for you. Comments about small rooms are the budget rooms in the front of the building, all the rooms with terrace or balcony are spacious, great big beds and very quiet and away from the busy street.
The local family / owners are absolute 10/10. I got sick the day after we arrived and they took care of us for 8 days, bringing us great food every single day, many home made thee’s and aryuvedic medicine to make me feel better. All their kids work here as well and they are so kind and helpfull every minute of the day. The last days I could finally enjoy their very tastefull and big breakfast and all the food they make is fresh and delicious. Thanks to them we can now enjoy our holiday again because they took care of us with so much love, nothing was to much for them. Thank you Morning Star for all your help and love 🙏❤️

We were impressed with Morning Star last year, so we decided to go back this year – and it was better than ever. Mr Sanasooria runs the place and he is an avid collector of Sri Lankan antiques and works of art, so the place is decorated with traditional paintings and dotted with antiques and wood carvings. The rooms are spacious and furnished in Sri Lankan style with wood everywhere, the bathrooms have separate shower and toilet and double wash basins, the gardens are lush with colourful plants and trees, the pool is set in magical jungle surroundings that are occasionally visited by peacocks, chipmunks, butterflies and monkeys, the breakfast is sumptuous with a huge tropical fruit platter, eggs, curd and honey and toast. Most of all it is the welcoming, cosy, family atmosphere that impressed us most.

We cannot recommend this wonderful hotel enough, not only is it in a perfect location within Marrisa, the hospitality at the Morning Star was absolutly faultless.
So friendly and helpful, they allowed us to stay longer than we had originally booked when our tour was cancelled due to Covid 19.
The hotel is a stones throw from the beach, the beach where they had the perfect seafood restaurant and an area of beach where you can swim with the sea turtles.
The hotel is also within walking distance to some really nice places to eat and drink.
We plan to return next year and stay at this wonderful hotel again.

We had a late flight leaving Sri Lanka so we booked 2 rooms for 2 nights arriving December 26th and leaving 6 pm December 27th but had the rooms booked until 11 am December 28th. Basically staying for under 30 hours. We wanted to see the coast line and it was nice, although lots of trash in and around Mirissa.
When we arrived we could clearly see that the two adjacent rooms and less expensive were occupied. (traveling with our 15 year old daughter), The owner offered us a better room m for $50 USD for our stay, so my daughter would then be able to stay beside us. When I went to check out the rate was in Rupes, the amount translated to well over a $200 increase. the owner dropped it by $100 USD.
I guess the upsell was per night for both rooms.
The wifi is non existent,
We did have the included breakfast one morning of our two night, two room stay and it was very nice.
There was air conditioning in both of our rooms and it worked. there are a lot of mosquitos and near impossible to be out at dusk.
The tv remote or tv did not work.
The pool area is nice.
The hotel was not busy nor was most anything in Mirrisa
The beach is an easy access across the road.
We probably should have just gone to Colombo and stayed in a branded high rise hotel as we were worn out from Sri Lanka and it's smaller hotels and lack of proper services.
We were at a point where we were exhausted from inflated rates, rooms not as described. I felt most of the hotels we stayed at in Sri Lanka were not up to the their descriptions nor completely comfortable. Its a shame as people are desperate for foreign tourism yet not entirely truthful. We won’t be back to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka seems to be more suitable for backpackers without time lines.
It was and will remain our last hotel stay in Sri Lanka.

Our family stayed here in the beginning of March for 5 nights.
At first we were a little skeptical but our expectations were met.

As we are a family the room consists of two big beds in one space. The only comment I can have is there are to many pillow blankets etc... on the bed. Beds are good and big.

The family is very helpful and every answer to a question is no problem and they help in every way. They are also honest if something is not good if advise is asked.

The son brought us to our next location and we were given a cake once we left.
Tuktuks are arranged upon request, breakfast is generous.

Pool is also lovely, especially when the monkeys come have a look. No worries about "the busy road".

Stay safe and healthy!

Morning Star is located off the busy Galle to Matara road. On arrival we were not sure but were given a wonderful Sri Lankan greeting by the lovely family that run Morning Star and a delicious fruit shake. We opted for one of the less expensive rooms in the main building which was a bit noisy due to the constant traffic on the road. It was decorated in Sri Lankan style and had everything we needed, including AC, kettle and hot shower. The gardens of the property are delightful with a pool where a swim is often watched over by the local wildlife including a troop of monkeys and peacocks The breakfast served here is excellent.
Across the main road is a path to Turtle beach where a morning visit and a bit of patience provides a special opportunity to see the turtles in the sea- snorkelling equipment available to rent.
We loved our stay at Morning Star and would definitely add this to your South Coast itinerary. Recommend to book a garden view room which are likely to be more tranquil.

Family run resort with an unparalleled focus on hospitality and comfort of their guests. Beautiful surroundings, comfortable rooms that always smell of fresh flowers and the beach is across the road.

Welcomed with cold napkins, juice and a 2 mins early check-in. They helped us book our whale watching safari with Raja and the whales which is another amazing company in itself. Their son Jaya dropped us to our next destination at a reasonable price in their family car too.

Breakfast is wholesome and the home made yogurt with honey is to die for.

I would visit Mirissa again just to stay with Anura and family.

This familly run hotel was amazing. The owner and his familly were so helpful, friendly and went above all expectations, organising two trips for us, laundry and lending us snorkel gear.
Location is great, you only have to cross the road and you are on the beach. Turtle Bay did not disappoint, we saw many turtles!
The room was fantastic, clean and spacious.  Breakfast was perfect for the day ahead, eggs, yogert and fruit but also offered traditional Sri Lankan breakfast. Dinner was also worth excepting- delicious add on.
The pool is situated at the back of the property, which is in a relaxing environment with comfortable sun loungers.
We loved every minute.

Morning Star is an absolutely perfect place to stay for anyone visiting Mirissa. One minute from the stunning beach, the location is ideal and the rooms were large and comfortable. Most importantly, the guest house is family run, and the staff were so incredibly helpful and kind. They were full of ideas, offered wonderful meals, were able to arrange travel when I left, and even arranged a quick, easy and cheap PCR test before my flight home.

Thank you so much to the whole family and all the staff, who made my experience in Mirissa so easy and comfortable!

Just spent a week at this family run hotel and can’t fault the place. We stayed in a superior room which has everything you need and a really large comfortable bed, these rooms are situated a very short walk from the pool and on the edge of a jungle so don’t be surprised by visiting monkeys you’ll also see and hear peacocks plus palm squirrels. Breakfast you get a good choice and the owner is always making sure you have enough nothing is too much trouble, all in all a great place run by a very pleasant hard working family and a very attentive local staff member

Hello, when we stayed at the hotel there was a family with three kids, I think they were in the same room. It looked like one of the rooms have two twin beds. I recommend to write to the hotel, they are very kind. The hotel is owned by a lovely local family. Best regards.
