I haven't stayed in a hostel for many, many years so was a bit hesitant when booking here on Airbnb. The place was great. Although it is still being worked on and the landscaping is yet to be done, the rooms are clean and vert comfortable (stayed in a twin with attached bathroom). Angelina was friendly and very helpful. The location is quiet and a short walk to the beach. The wifi is good, no signal in the room but fast connection in the common area. This great place will only get better as the works get finished.

Hostel First was the best hostel I‘ve been to in Sri Lanka. The owner is a very kind and decent American guy who takes care that bathrooms etc. stay clean (unfortunateley not a normal thing in Sri Lanka- but here bathrooms are thoroughly cleaned twice per day and the towles & beddings also seemed to be really washed and not just perfumed lol). The atmosphere was just great which is probably also due to the garden with it‘s table for giants, the bright and cozy common room and the fact that the hostel had a large kitchen with free filtered water and a cute dog taking part in hostel life :). Breakfast was also good, typical hostel breakfast toast & jam but also fresh fruits. Me and the other travellers I met and Hostel first really enjoyed our time! Staying there gave me a feeling of being at home!
PS: Close to the beach, restaurants, shops & supermarket near by and they also offer snorkling tours etc!

I stayed for two nights at the hostel and it is really easy to find and in a great location near the main supermarket, restaurants, cafes and just a short walk from the beach. The staff are extremely friendly and I enjoyed the movie night we had on the second night. The graffiti work done in the hostel is really impressive and the whole vibe of the hostel is laid back and perfect for the beach. They have free filtered water, tea and breakfast. They also have a very cute friendly dog. I really cannot wait for my next trip to Sri Lanka to stay at hostel first again!

The hostel had a chilled out vibe to it, people just coming and going, relaxing in the bean bag chairs etc, so much so that I found it difficult to meet people here. There was quite a few families at the time I was there also so they weren’t interested in chatting about travels. The breakfast here is nice, loved the fresh fruit (pineapple and watermelon on different days), toast and jam etc. My room did have air con however like everywhere in Sri Lanka, there was so many power cuts, pretty much nightly for 1-2 hours. Sitting in the room in the dark with the light from your phone can get so hot and claustrophobic but the staff who work here have portable electric lights that they set out on the tables in the common area which is nice. The kitchen here is very large, you can use any of the amenities here (including all the spices), the fridge they just ask you to label your things, it was so nice having cold drinks on hand for the sweltering Sri Lankan days.
The beach is very close, and its well frequented with other travellers so you won’t have any issues if your on your own. The waves can be very strong so make sure your a good swimmer if going by yourself.

The owner (from Kandy) was really really nice and helpful. For this reason I wanted to give it 2 points, but when I arrived at my next accommodation, opened my suitcase and could still smell that room in my clothes, I deccided to write the truth about the place. The private room we had had a horrible smell. The room was big but the sheets had brown stains and the bathroom was dirty. Dead mosquitos on the wall and dirt stains on the shelves. Didn't put my toothbrush in the cup provided cause there were stains and dirt inside. After I requested to have it cleaned, onl the floor was cleaned and the rest stayed just the same. Aparat from the owner, who was there only on my third days there, nobody could provide me with any information about the area and attractions - I was better off using the internat. Though it was really weak there. The volunteers who work there change all the time and they don't know much about the area. Information doesn't seem to pass easily from staff to staff. I had to go back there 3 times, 3 days in a row, to get my change. Once there was no water for a couple of hours - which we hadn't been informed about and were waiting and had to change plans. Another time no electricity. Our cupboard lock was broken and the first persson who showed us roun said he'd get it fixed, but later we decided we preferred it if nobody came to the room when we're not there, so we went to the reception and asked them not to get the lock fixed. Next day when we came from the beach it wass fixed nevertheless. You're supposed to take your shoes offf in the common area and kitchen but the place is so dirty that it was really uncomfortable, The kitchen needs thorough cleaning. I'm really sorry for the nice owner that I have to write such a bad review. Also, the mosquito net which was supposed to be white and wthot holes, wasn't. Sorry!
And I know it's budget, but we've been to much much superior places for the same price in Sri Lanka now

Hey, We're sorry you feel this way about the place. Our rooms and entire hostel are cleaned thoroughly every day and we check them before people arrive. The manager and owner both know a lot about the area and, aside from their days off, are usually always around to help out. As for our volunteers, they do a minimum of two weeks and try hard to make sure everyone is happy and has all of the information they require. It sounds like there were a few miscommunications, which we are sorry about! We've taken this into account and will work hard to make sure there is always someone around who understands all of your questions and wishes. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your travels! We arrived here expecting to stay for two nights and ended up staying for seven. We loved the atmosphere here. It was a great place for us to make lots of new friends and meet many travellers on their journeys. The hostel is in a great well lit location. It is a short walk to the beach but also close to many shops and other amenities. The kitchen facilities were great and we regularly enjoyed preparing our own breakfast and teas. Whilst here, we also enjoyed an amazing seafood barbecue hosted by the hostel staff. In addition to a great morning yoga session. The staff are really helpful and helped us to arrange our onward travel too. Our room was a very good size and was definitely nice and quiet. We could even hear the waves of the ocean at night.

I would highly recommend this place and would definitely stay again.

I spent only one night at the hostel but it was enough to see that it doesn't worth the money I paid.Bunk beds are extremely noisy, at last the one I was sleeping on. I couldn't sleep at night at all. Moreover, the ceiling fan was not enough as it was too hot at night and mosquitoes almost finished me. No breakfast included, that's just unacceptable for hostels for such price. It was not social at all, there were no other guests except me. Now I know why. Other hostels in Mirissa are the way better than this one.

Hostel First is a budding chain of hostels for and by travelers! It has a great vibe, especially for the creative oriented. It offers a great fraternity for solo and couple travellers and a sense of calm in the busy tourist town of Mirissa. The staff and guests are very helpful, cordial and fun! They have a lot of activities going on always to make your stay in Mirissa very memorable :)
