I stayed in a triple room of Hakata Excel Hotel Tokyu from 17 to 21 April.

I would highly recommend it to those visiting Fukuoka for two reasons.

First, it is located in Nakasu-Kawabata Station, which is only 3 stations away from the Fukuoka Airport along the Orange (K) Subway Line (taking no more than 15 minutes).

If you are taking a lot of luggages with you and do not want to take any flight of stairs, look for Exit 2 (in the Nakasu direction). It is the closest exit to the Hotel with escalator. When you go up the escalator, you will see a big 24-hour grocery store. Pass through it and go up another escalator to the G/F level. Cross the street and go up to the next, then you will see the back entrance of the Hotel.

If you get off at Exit 1, keep walking until you see the traffic lights (facing the canal direction). Turn left and you will see the sign of the Hotel.

It is easy to move around within Fukuoka (and travel beyond Fukuoka) from the Hotel too. You can find two of the biggest shopping and dining areas at Tenjin Station and Hakata Station (all along the Orange (K) Subway Line). You can also get change to JR line (connecting to other further off or distant cities/perfectures) at Hakata Station.

Once you step out of the Hotel, you will see loads of restaurants and Yatai food stalls around. There are also 24-hour convenience stores close-by.

Second, the reception staff is extremely friendly and helpful. They try their best to make the stay of their guests comfortable. Most of them speak fluent English. There should be no difficulty of communication at all.

So even though it is by no way cheap to stay at the Hotel, I still find it good value for money well spent and worth spending for the convenience and the service.

We are travelling with 2 children of 8 and 10. The hotel is able to provide a decent room with 4 single beds. I think the room was intended to be a twin bed room, but rather spacious to start with and hence can make way for 2 more beds. Like other business hotels in Japan, it is well equipped with basic personal care amenities. The location is good as well, being next to a subway exit, and surrounded by numerous restaurants. Also in walking distance to the heart of Hakata. We will be happy to visit this hotel again.

After reading the reviews I decided to stay at Excel and thought it was an overall really good hotel. The location is excellent, just 1 minute walk from Nakasu-Kawabata station. I have to admit I was a bit lost when I first got here since I was expecting a big hotel with clear signs right outside of the subway, but I was wrong. Workers around the area had no clue what I was talking about, and on top of that, it was raining! So I felt the need to write this review mostly for directions:

At Nakasu-Kawabata subway station, take the Exit 1 stairs up to the street level. You will see a street directly in front of the exit (a one way street). Turn left (towards the cars driving at you) and you will see a blue and silver sign on the right hand side, just about halfway down the street. That is the side entrance to the hotel.

Overall I thought the hotel stay and staff were excellent, especially for the price at $70ish per night. I had a twin room with a friend and we both had a pleasant stay. The room was clean and decent sized. Also, there were a few staff members that spoke English very well, so they were very helpful with directions/advice or calling us a cab. I would definitely stay here again.

The only good thing about this hotel is its location. Other than that, 1) the rooms are tiny, 2) it’s extremely dirty and dusty, 3) the Aircon and WiFi don’t work, 4) everything is sooo rundown.

Hotel staff are fine - coz we never interacted. Breakfast is not as bad as others mentioned.

Check out my photos for a dusty room.

LOCATION: Taxi from the airport cost JPY 2050 and took 15 minutes. Centrally located. Less than a ten-minute walk to the city centre. Gentlemen's clubs a few steps from the hotel. Could be noisy at night if the window is open. Otherwise the hotel has very good sound proof windows.

HOTEL: Fast and no fuss but not especially friendly check in. Bright room, but very dusty. See pictures for details. Rather hard mattress. Small and skimpy pillow. Good A/C. Decent shower. Bathroom stinks humidity and urine. Free in-room wifi.

CONCLUSION: Very good location. Not especially clean. Bathroom is a disgrace. The worst I have ever experienced in Japan. Not recommended.

This hotel was perfect, the 24 hour bar that served some of the best guiness out of Dublin was something to remember, and at $5 a pint great value, Skimpy barmaids and great singing. I'm sure biggles would feel right at home

In Fukuoka, many good restaurants are required the foreigner to make reservation via the hotel. The concierge of most hotels are helpful to make reservation EXCEPT Hakata Excel Hotel Tokyu refused to help their guests to make booking. I'm very upset with their services. If I can choose again, Hakata Excel Hotel Tokyu must not an option.

In between, this hotel has no email contact so that you can imagine how unhelpful of this hotel.

this hotel is a light blue building located along the canal.

the room and bath was clean with all the basic you will need that you only need to pack your clothes and shoes. there is an ioniser which help, my only issue was the non-smoking room was not on a non-smoking floor. and the towels had a smoke-scent on them, although i am not sure if its from cigs thou :(.

there is a supermarket at Gates, with Lawson and 7-11 on almost every other street. lots of resturants, pubs and karaoke joints that open late till 5am. you can take the back streets that cut to the hotel in 2mins, imstead of walking round the block.

Tenjin train and bus terminal is a 10mins walk and it no prob dragging the trolley with you. its one of the major transit point so lots more food and shopping malls.

our treat was locating three yatais at the larger canal, it was so fun and homely, not too crowd. we stopped and enjoyed grilled meat, ramen and ashai. Love the experience!

We stayed in a double-room for 4 nights from 2015, feb 25 to march 1 using it as a base to explore area outside Fukuoka. Although the room size is 20 sqm, bigger than some of the hotel rooms that we had stayed, there is limited walking space with 2 big luggage because of the coffee table and 2 chairs by the window and TV shelf. The bed size (140cm x 195cm) is just nice. Our room face the canal but not full view because the hotel building is U-shaped. So looking out from the window, we can see windows of the other hotel room facing each other on the left and right. The hotel comes with standard amenities. Free wifi is provided in the room and it is stable.

During winter, the aircon only has warm air and the window can only be pushed out 9 cm from inside (pretty stiff to open). If there is no cool wind from outside, the room can be quite stuffy. We use the air purifier/humidifer to generate some cool air so it is bearable. On the fourth night, the air purifier/humidifier stop working due to the low water level and the dirty filter. I think the hotel should ensure that the electronic equipment is properly maintained. The staff should also highlight that the aircon is not operating in winter and guide us on the opening of the window.

We didn't try the breakfast as it is quite expensive and there are many restaurant around the area. Convenience store such as Family mart, Lawson and 7-eleven are 2 mins away from the hotel. Nakasu is a red-light district, so there are plenty of adult-entertainment around the area. If you feel unpleasant to walk past the various shop at night, take the side exit from the hotel lobby, turn left and walk towards exit 1 of the Nakasukawabata station. We walked as a couple so we didn't feel uncomfortable or have any problem passing by the shop.

Access to the hotel is easy via subway. We came from Beppu at night by taking the Limited express Sonic Train (5360 Yen reserved, 2-2.5 hrs depending on the schedule) to Hakata Station and then take a subway to Nakasukawabata Station (200 Yen, 5 min). Through station exit 1, walking to the hotel takes less than 2 mins. Those with heavy luggage should take elevator/escalator at exit 4.

Nakasukawabata Station sits between Tenjin and Hakata Station on the Kuko Line and each direction takes less than 5 mins, so it is really convenient to explore the shopping district around the areas. The hotel is near the Canal City and it takes around 10 mins walking along the canal.

Exploring other cities is easy as Hakata Station offers direct train to Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Beppu, Yufuin etc, within 1.5 to 3 hrs. During our 3 day at Fukuoka, we managed to visit the theme park (Huis Ten Bosch) and Tosu Premium outlet in other cities; and Fukuoka's Canal City and Marinoa City.

Overall stay is good because of its location but we have to pay an average of S$156 per night which is more expensive than our stay in Kumamoto and Beppu. The previous 2 stays from different 3-star hotel chain comes with natural onsen and is much cheaper.

To visit other part of the Kyushu area, staying near Hakata station would be a better choice to avoid taking the subway daily.

Within Fukuoka city, the hotel sits on the subway Kuko Line (Airport Line) and Hakozaki Line, and one stop away from Nanakuma Line. We may consider staying at the same hotel in the future as we only spend one day in the city for this trip.
