Came from up North for a two night stay in the post-Corona times, Fiona was very conscientious, donning face mask and gloves. Hand sanitiser available both in the lounge and in the room, with disinfectant wipes also in the room.
Parking was easy, on-street right outside Heron House and we could see the car from our window.
A lovely charming stay with a four poster bed and the smell of the floral bouquet in the room. Tea and coffee facilities with a grand tin of biscuits (Twix, KitKats and Club) and fresh milk provided.
Bathroom had twin sinks and a bath with overhead shower and ample toiletries offered.
Breakfast served in the dining room with requests taken the night before. A lovely homemade compote on offer and the largest tea cups I have ever seen. We didn’t share our breakfast time with anyone else, so no issues of social distancing there. Breakfast served masked and gloved up.
Staying here was like visiting your favourite Grandma, if she’s a bit posh with a lovely house! I had no anxiety staying here and felt really at ease.

Hi, thank you for your lovely and comprehensive review of your stay in Bampton last weekend. Not sure I liked being called a Grandma, but a 'favorite' one will do!!! Goodness you were lucky with the weather, its been quite cool over the last couple of days. As we are only just starting out again welcoming guests to Heron House after being closed for months following the COVID-19 upheaval, I am really pleased you felt at ease in spite of the fact that your hostess looked more like a train robber hiding behind a mask and with gloves on. All very strange. Come and stay with us again if you are down visiting friends, it would be lovely to have you.

We were lucky to find this as a last minute stay for a few days after restrictions prevented travel abroad. We stayed in the four poster room which was very clean and comfortable. There was plenty of space for our two dogs along with their bed and toys in the very large bathroom. The house is tastefully decorated to suit the age and style of the property and guests can also use the sitting room. Fiona is a very welcoming host and was very helpful with information on places to visit. We enjoyed a delicious, freshly cooked breakfast each morning, with lots of options to cater for all tastes and including yummy home made preserves, yoghurt and fruit. Evening meals are available upon request but we didn’t choose to take this up. Bampton is a pretty village and has several pubs and cafes within a stones throw of Heron House, but I would suggest booking tables ahead of your visit if you wish to dine out, particularly with Covid restrictions in place - We enjoyed a lovely meal at The Swan.
There is parking on the road and a car park immediately opposite but this was often busy, however there is a bigger car park just 3-5 minutes walk away if you cannot park immediately outside.
Our only slightly negative point is that I had requested a room for 2 adults and 2 dogs on my initial enquiry and asked how much this would cost, however we were then charged extra for the dogs on checkout. Don’t get me wrong, we had expected to pay an extra fee to take them, but believed this had already been added to my original invoice, so communication could have been clearer regarding this. That said, we had a lovely enjoyable stay and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to others wishing to explore this lovely part of Devon.

What a wonderful review, thank you so much. Hopefully now, our Website makes it clearer for guests, that there is an £8.00 charge per night per dog. The price quoted for a stay is per room per night for humans! Many thanks for pointing this out. Fiona

We were bought a voucher for our wedding which we used for this stay. We had to use it midweek in order not to incur additional charges but actually that worked well because it was quieter. The BnB was clean and had plenty of sanitiser and you felt like they were doing all they could to keep people safe in the current situation. Fiona was friendly and made us feel very welcome. The location was great, some lovely pubs within walking distance although if you are wanting to go for dinner you have to book especially at The Swan as we didn’t get in there. We went to the Exeter Inn instead and had a lovely meal there so I would recommend that. All the essential shops are within walking distance but there are also nice places you can drive to close by for walks. We went to the Tarr steps which was beautiful and enough of a walk for our 12 year old Lab! I would recommend staying at Heron House for the location as well as the comfort and friendliness!

Wow, thank you for your really kind review, much appreciated. Tarr Steps is heaven but I have not been for a walk there since February, the pub there is great for a meal or a well earned drink after a long walk. Hope to see you all back here in the near future. Best wishes Fiona

Charming 18th century house in picturesque village of Bampton. Friendly and direct landlady (Fiona) made us feel very welcome and allowed us to use her washing machine. Delicious breakfast, well-appointed rooms, comfortable bed. Fabulous!

Fiona is a very thoughtful host and made us feel relaxed in her home. We only spent a short time at the property as we were out across Devon for a few days. We would have preferred to have locks on our bedroom doors, as with most bnbs/hotels, but luckily we were the only guests staying which was nice so there was no concern there. Fiona is a great cook and we very much enjoyed our dinner and breakfasts. Very comfortable beds, warm and clean, and tidy bathroom with a good shower. If we are ever in the area again we will stay for sure.

Hello HCarmen, thank you so much for your very kind review of your fleeting stay with us at Heron House while you were house hunting. So exciting that you have found your forever home in Devon. If you had read the Important Guest Information page on our website you would have been forewarned that there are no locks on our bedroom doors as all the keys have been accidentally taken home by past guests, but in spite of repeated reminders they have not been returned! As with many very old properties (1785) the door catches and locks are also old, rim locks which as a listed building we are not able to change. It would be lovely to welcome you back to Heron House if you need a stop-over on your way backwards and forwards from Kent while negotiations on your new home are proceeding. Best wishes Fiona

We booked the foodie weekend, which includes a 3 course Michelin star meal on the Saturday night (not drinks, which was communicated before arrival) and travel to and from the restaurant. The property is beautiful and decorated in such a complimentary way to the age of the building. It feels like visiting my nans house! So homely and cosy, roaring fire in the sitting room and a lovely host welcoming us into her home. Fiona was clearly in pain and using a crutch but this didn't stop her... every detail was tended to with such care. The room was cosy and clean, we were shown all the information and asked when we would like breakfast, what we would like for breakfast and reminded that if we want wine with dinner at Heron House to pop to the shop before it closed, as the guesthouse isnt licenced. Fiona served us a beautiful homemade pasta dish and chocolate fondant for dessert. I believe there was an issue with taxis in the Saturday, to get us to and from the restaurant - again, this didn't stop Fiona. This lady took her car to be valeted and drove us there and back herself! We were blown away by the service we received, we hope to come back again soon.

Hi Sarah, so lovely to have you both to stay as my guests for the weekend, it was my pleasure and I am so pleased you enjoyed your first visit to a Micheline starred restaurant. The Masons Arms has always proved popular with my guests and friends alike, in addition, the scenary all around is quite stunning. Hopefully next time I welcome you back to Heron House I won't be on crutches, so flipping dull! Bst wishes Fiona

I chose this guest house, out of the buy a gift locations, that were listed in the voucher category that I had received as a present.
Heron house, is not your typical guest house, but feels more like staying in someone’s quaint family home. Adorned with ornaments, paintings and personal photographs gave you a sense of going back in time. The house dates back to the Georgian period, and as one walks in to the hallway, you are met with a lovely mosaic flooring of yesteryear.
Fiona made us very welcome and supper on the first night, shared with our fellow guests was both sumptuous and gave us an ideal opportunity, to get know each other over the meal. Tea and coffee, was served in bone china cups, in the drawing room, again a lovely touch.
We had the four poster bed, which although small by todays bed sizes was more than adequate, for our 2 night stay. It was comfortable, and the room was quiet, even though it overlooks the main high street. The adjoining en-suite, had Jack and Jill sinks and the bathroom itself was large and airy.
Breakfast is ordered the night before, along with a suitable time of choice, however all food is cooked fresh and was very well presented.
All in all, a very pleasant guest house to stay in and provided us an ideal bolt hole to explore the surrounding areas of natural beauty.

My partner and I arrived for a short break to be welcomed by Fiona and shown to our very comfortable room with its big, roomy en suite. Our dinner there was superb: we were not expecting Guinea fowl, never mind so well cooked, and a lovely sticky toffee pudding to follow. The breakfasts were delicious too. We didn't spend much time in the lounge but we were very comfortable when we were there. We were delighted to meet the three cocker spaniels who also live there! The location is great for Exmoor and there are good pubs and restaurants in Bampton, so it really is a great place for a relaxing holiday. Well recommended!

We had such a wonderful stay here at Heron House. The welcome was warm, the house beautiful, and our bedroom lovely. So peaceful and quiet. We slept very well in the comfortable beds with excellent quality linens. Fiona cooked the best breakfast ever! All quality ingredients. Delicious bread and home made compote. Really excellent. Bampton is a lovely small town with local shops and pubs. We ate in with Fiona one night (delicious) and ate in an excellent pub, The Swan on the second night, (separate review). Heron House has a great location, in the main street, with easy walking distance to all the pubs and shops. We loved it!!

Fiona is a lovely friendly host and a great cook. Both evening meals and the breakfasts were delicious. The king size bed was very comfortable , very quiet and the bedroom furnishings and en-suite / toiletries were top class. The lounge had a roaring fire. Nice little touches such as fresh milk for your room for your tea and filter coffee. Fiona offers a two course evening meal "supper" but note there is only one choice of main and pudding each night - you need to give Fiona in advance your list of likes and dislikes. The breakfst cooked menu is varied and extensive including what my wife and I had - blueberry pancakes with maple syrup, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and an extensive traditional cooked breakfast amongst the choice which you provide Fiona the evening before your choice Highly recommend if you want a very homely and personal bed and breakfast experience. Bampton is a country village /small town on the edge of Exmoor easy access to all the major tourist sites of interest in Exmoor and parts of Dartmoor, plus the North Devon coast with plenty of nearby walks and excellent pubs and local produce shops.
