We stayed at Minshuku Rakutenya (also known as Rakutenya Guesthouse) on Ishigaki Island for two nights in October 2013, and chose a traditional Japanese style room. The guesthouse has a backpackers / hostel feel and so you can hear people in the next room or upstairs, and there are shared communal bathrooms. The room was small but suitable for 2 people, and we had plenty of room for our (small) suitcases.

A few things to note - some of the photos and information on the guesthouse's website is now outdated. The buildings are a bit more rundown than the photos suggest, and as Ishigaki now has a new international airport, the guesthouse is about a 25 minutes' drive / 3200 yen taxi (as opposed to the stated 10 minutes - 1000 yen). It is also very basic - for example, there are no towels; you have to bring your own. However it is still a charming place and is perfect for exploring the island.

Overall we enjoyed our time at Rakutenya - the location is fantastic, very close to many restaurants, cute shops, convenience stores and the ferry. The free wifi works well and there are washing machines if you need to wash clothes. The rooms are cheap, especially compared to many other hotels in Ishigaki. If we returned to Ishigaki, we would definitely stay here again.

We stayed one night at Rakutenya Guesthouse. Great location, we were able to walk to lots of restaurants. It has a hostel feel with shared bathrooms and communal areas. The owner was very friendly and helpful. There is laundry onsite and air conditioning available for 100 yen/2 hours. We heard a lot of noise from people around 1-2 am, but other than that it was totally fine and was a great price!

Loved it !

Room is not very big and aircond is 100 yen per hour, but the atmosphere is good. Internet is free to use. Toilets and showers are quite old, but new ones exists in next door accomodation. But above all : owners are so kind and helpfull !!!

We booked to stay for one night and ended up staying for five! Wonderful guesthouse with a real homely feel.
We first stayed in the Japanese room which was fab, the futons super comfy and the air con very effective.
Stayed in the standard twin bed room for the last two nights and it was also comfy and clean.
The owner is so friendly and makes you feel very welcome as soon as you arrive.
Free coffee in the morning, use f a microwave and fridge in room. Also a huge bonus was use of the washer/dryer, makes a bg difference when you're traveling for 5 months with a limited amount of clothes!
One of the best places I've stayed while traveling through Asia, highly recommend!
The island is paradise too!

Venting (better out than in) point:

Stayed in this hostel in May and the owner was of little help despite the good reviews I read online. When I asked whether he could keep our bag safe for a night while we go camping and collect it the next day he refused even with the offer of paying just to keep the bag. This is the first time I have experienced such a reaction even though I have had such help many times before. Also he seemed extremely unwilling to help with that and other matters and seemed disinterest when asked about suggestions for islands and ferry times. Plus the room was damp and toilet was covered in ants and seemed unlooked after.overall dissatisfied, particularly with service.

Positive points:

Cheap and decent location

Rakutenya was located in an urban area of Ishigaki- close to lots of restaurants and shopping, with easy access to transportation nearby. The owner was really friendly. Come with 100 yen coins for the a/c, which you'll need in order to sleep at night. Overall, it's a great, cheap place to stay.

We stayed for 5 nights at Rakutenya and were extremely pleased we did. The location is amazing, 5 minutes walk from the inter island ferry services, even closer to get to the shops and restaurants downtown. The owners are very friendly, in typical okinawan style they are very laid back and will make you feel like Rakutenya is your home. The rooms are small but perfectly fine, one thing to note is that the aircon costs 100 yen an hour so that is a small expense that you must budget for.
really appreciated the free and surprisingly fast wifi connection too. Will definitely be back as soon as possible

Nice owner, but the room was very moldy. Our clothes smelled of mold days after leaving despite only spending one night there.

We have just spent 4 days with our young family staying at Rakutenya on Ishigaki. Despite Rakutenya being a conglomoration of 4 old buildings we found the history of the buildings fascinating. The couple who run Rakutenya are absolutely lovely, helpful and full of information about many things especially the history of the Yaeyama Islands. The lovely lady went out of her way helping us and making us feel at home. The location of Rakutenya is perfect - only about 50 metres to the shops and about 500metres to the ferry terminal. We really miss our time at Rakutenya and will definitely go back in the future.

The location was the only redeeming quality. We stayed for 5 nights. The room wasn't very clean and we ended up realizing from bites on our legs and feet that there were bed bugs. And because we were a group of 3, we probably could have found better accommodation elsewhere. I feel mislead by the pictures on the website and how friendly the owner was over the phone.
