We stayed 2 nights at Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa. Check in was very professional & receptionist Matt showed us to our room & carried my wife's suitcase, excellent old fashioned service & gratefully appreciated. We were allocated room 345 on the 1st floor which was a modern room with huge king size bed, the bathroom too had the same modern feel. We ate in the Brasserie on the 1st evening & the food & service was excellent, a special mention to waitress Amy who was very attentive. Breakfast in the morning is buffet style with the plates kept warm which helps the cooked breakfast stay warm throughout the meal. We will definitely be back at Thornton Hall & would highly recommend.

My husband and I attended a New Year's Eve party at Thornton Hall and stayed overnight. It was perfect. Unfortunately, the room my husband and I booked into initially had a severed water leak. However, the manager dealt with this problem with efficiency and in a helpful manner. We were offered an alternative room immediately, which was just opposite the first room and the manager helped us move our possessions into the second room. He even offered us a bottle of Prosecco for our table as a good will gesture.
I must say that I found the bar prices a little expensive but other than that, I have no complaints whatsoever and would highly recommend the hotel to family and friends.
I also attended the "Rat Pack" Christmas event twice, once with my work colleagues on a staff night out and once with friends. Both occasions were excellent and all participants of both parties enjoyed the event.
Just before Christmas, my husband and I also had afternoon tea which was beautifully presented and very tasty.
Overall, the staff at all levels are friendly, helpful and welcoming. I would not hesitate to return to Thornton Hall.

The cost of each event was excellent value for money and the overnight stay was reasonably priced.

I came for a weekend away and was surprised how dirty it was. I had room service delivered with a dirty glass, when I called reception they sent a new drink but tried to charge me for the complimentary drink at checkout. There were dark curly hairs on the bedsheets and the bathroom floor was dirty, the towel had dark stains. This would be poor quality control during a normal time, but during Covid-19 this shouldn’t be happening. There should be extra care for cleanliness during a global pandemic that is particularly bad on the Wirral.

As I explained to the receptionist why the extra charge on the complimentary drink should be deducted (a customer shouldn’t have to explain why a complimentary drink shouldn’t be charged for) another customer (who claimed to have worked in the hotel) got defensive and went on a rant at me why lipstick is hard to get off glasses, I explained I’m fully aware of this, but quality control should be extra vigilant during a pandemic and secondly, my complaint was that I was being charged for a new clean drink. The receptionist stayed quiet while the other former hotel staff went on a tirade.

I recently stayed overnight here for a wedding and was appalled by the fact that my thirteen year old ended up having to clear a load of hairs from the plug in the bath which were blocking the water from going down. I have stayed at a lot of hotels in my time and can not recall a single occasion where a plug has been so full of hair that it prevented the water from draining. Surely this is basic room hygiene and a hotel charging this amount of money should not have got this wrong. It is absolutely disgusting to let a room without even doing the basics of cleaning.
I informed reception and said that I would like to speak to a manager regarding the matter and after a ten minute wait was told that the manager was too busy to speak to me and was offered a bottle of wine as compensation. They also offered to re clean the room which was completely impractical with three people getting ready for a wedding.
I did not complain in the hope of getting something out of it but did think that maybe someone from the management team would of had the common courtesy and decency to come and speak to me about it. I asked the receptionist to pass on the message that I was staying until the next day and and was available for someone to come and talk to me but no one did.
Disgusted with the state of the room and even more disgusted by the lack of communication from the hotel management.
I shall also be writing to the hotel concerning this matter.

Hi Mr Brisco, Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, I'm sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. Im unsure as to why your room fell below our usual high standards of cleanliness as all our housekeepers have worked at the hotel for over 5 years and are very experienced and all our rooms are double checked by our housekeeping manager. Cleanliness is not a usually an issue as you can see from our other reviews and I will review this with the team. In regards to a management response our duty manager at the time of your request was in fact with another guest, Our receptionist in that instance took initiative and offered you a bottle of wine and to reclean the room, to which you refused and then left reception. On departure of hotel you were asked if you had enjoyed your stay and from what I have been made aware you left quite abruptly. I do apologise for your issue and hope it does not deter you from booking with us again. Many Thanks Josh Griffiths Front Office Manager

I booked a night away for my husbands 55th birthday. The cost was £350 for bed, breakfast, £100 to spend in lawns restaurant, a bottle of champagne and a 45 minute massage.
What we received was 2 tiny courses in the lawn and , the started would have fitted on a desert spoon . The main consisted of 3 pieces of lamb the size of my finger, with no substantial accompaniments, other than a few sponges of potatoes. . Needless to say we left extremely hungry and not happy as the cost was £94. Breakfast was buffet style which I feel for a 4* hotel is a lazy option. You could order some items from the kitchen, therefore I ordered 2 poached eggs which came in a pool of water and my husband ordered an omelette and the oil it was cooked in was burnt and left an after taste. The table next to us received milk in a gravy jug! Which I thought was embarrassing for the hotel. The spa treatment was actually 27 minutes long and not 45 minutes, however the general manager has informed me in feedback that the consultation is added onto the time, does that mean a 30 minute massage would only be 15 minutes and 15 minute consultation?. On the plus side the spa was very enjoyable and all of the staff professional and friendly. The hotel is spotless and gardens beautiful. I have contacted the front of house manager twice and he offered us a free cream tea each, which I explained was not really feasible as we live so far away, I was therefore offered a 20% discount if I booked a room and a complimentary breakfast. I feel that this is an insult, in my view the breakfast isnt worth having and as they are currently doing a flash sale offering b and b for approximately £90, therefore a £18 discount does not justify a dissatisfied £350 spend.

Hi Carolyn, Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, all our feedback whether positive or negative is used constructively and aids us to improve our services further. As previously mentioned via e-mail, all our dishes to a set standard and specification. Each of our dishes are consistent with the next and it is very rare that portion sizes are brought to my attention especially in a negative way. A consultation is needed before all of our treatments for health and safety purposes, this is stated on all of our confirmation e-mails and on any website we are able to be booked on. That being said the package that you have booked was a Romantic Getaway package, there is no indication on that advertisement or on any of our confirmations that this is a 45 minute treatment? A 45 minute slot is booked out for our therapists however the hands on element of this treatment is always around 30 minutes, after consultation. All this being said I a sorry to see that our offer of Afternoon Tea or 20% discount with complimentary breakfast did not suffice. We wish you all the best for the future. Many Thanks Josh Griffiths Front Office Manager

I booked a spa break with overnight bed and breakfast and afternoon tea through a third party for myself and my wife.

Firstly arriving there was really easy, I’d checked in online so getting my key was a simple process. We were directed to our room which was large, clean, well presented and comfortable.

We then visited the spa, again this was a simple process, we exchanged our room key sleeve for robes, towels and slippers. Changing rooms were perfectly adequate and I have no complaints. The spa had 2 saunas (I inside and one outside), a steam room, infrared seating area and three hot tubs (2 outside, one in). There were loungers and seatings outside and you were able to order drinks charged to your room. There was some wait for the hot tubs and some people required prompting or they’d be there all day. On the main everything worked well.

In the evening we went to the terrace where the was live entertainment in the form of a talented singer. We had a choice of whether we wanted to dine or just drink. We elected for a cheeseboard with wine and also a few drinks on the side. The food was lovely and plentiful, I would say it was definitely value for money. The service was good and we were always attended to if our drinks ran low.

We went back to the room and had showers before bed, the bathroom and clean and tidy, with a really strong shower. There was also a selection of toiletries should you need. Anything you may have forgot was also available at reception.
Overall we had a good, comfortable nights sleep.

Next day we had a buffet breakfast. The selection offered was good and the food was a good quality.

To see our trip off we went back to the spa for back neck and shoulder massages and afternoon tea. The treatments were perfect and neither of us had any complaints. We were asked how we preferred our massage and were not left disappointed. After spending a little more time in the spa we had afternoon tea. A choice of tea or coffee and a large selection for cakes and sandwiches were provided. We even ended up having to take some away with us.

Overall I’d highly recommend staying here, we had no complaints at all.

Stayed here when attending a wedding at nearby Thornton Hall.
We booked a package that included an upgraded room, breakfast and cream tea and were very happy with the cost (£99).
We also got a drinks voucher for booking direct which was great and we’d do the same again for this.
The hotel is set in lovely grounds and has a nice bar and lounge area. The residents bar was also open when we got back which was handy for a night cap.
The staff go above and beyond and are very helpful especially Kyle on reception who was great at pointing everything out and are easily one of the hotels standout qualities.
The rooms are ok. A little tired and dark but clean and comfortable. They probably could do with updating but ok for a night. The mattress had a bit of a rubbery feel to it so wouldn’t say it was the best night sleep ever and again maybe something to look at. The ‘in bathroom’ TV didn’t work or even have the remote it should have but that wasn’t a big deal, they are advertised on the room description though.
The cream tea was very nice and breakfast was also really good with lots of choice and nice quality ingredients so we’d definitely eat here again. Seemed to be plenty of people using the restaurant which is always a good sign.
The spa area was pretty big and again the staff here were really friendly as well.
We’d definitely go again especially if the rooms got a little TLC.

Very nice hotel, with exceptionally good staff. No real, ‘complaints’, except that I hate buffet style breakfasts. I refuse to believe that these are in the customer’s interests, I think they are simply a cheaper staffing option for the hotel(s). And in any case, the breakfast here was far too expensive, for what it was.
Having vented my feelings on the breakfast, everything else is positive. Great staff, great WiFi, comfortable beds with obviously quality bedding items and pillows used, no skimping on toiletries, coffee and tea facilities etc. I will absolutely, definitely return. But I won’t bother with breakfast.

I booked a spa break online at short notice but booking was fine no concerns.
On the morning of the visit I received an email to say the afternoon tea was at 1.30pm and the first spa treatment was at 1.45. How we were supposed to eat and get to the spa in 15 mins im not sure.
We arrived at 12 45 and were told if we had afternoon tea straight away we'd be fine for times.
We were shown to the restraunt and given the wrong menu. When we eventually recieved the afternoon tea it was 12.20 and we could not eat quick enough. They did agree to save it for us which they did and we returned later to collect. Certainly not worth the price.
We ate out so cant comment on the evening meal but heard the service was also kaos from a checkout guest who was clearly not pleased.
The hotel looks beautiful, really aesthetically pleasing but wasn't clean. There were hundreds of dead bugs on the bar windowsill we were sat at, my husband dropped money down the chair and pulled out all sorts of muck when he put his hand down.
The bathroom in our club room was full of grime and the bed sheets had yellow stains all over them (see pic).
Breakfast was 5 pounds extra to have in our room, it was cold on arrival but it was tasty (and 15 mins late).
The spa was the only saving grace for us, treatments were great and the staff were very lovely.
Won't be staying again. Lack of communication via staff seems to be an issue and cleanliness.

Thank you for your review, I am sorry to hear you experience some issues during your stay. We of course do not want this to have been the case. I have to question the cleanliness standards you quote? all of our linen is industrially laundered to the highest standards, our very experienced housekeeping team ensure that bedrooms and public areas are cleaned to the highest of standards and checked, also fogged with a virucide prior to the next guest arriving. We also use ultra violet wands to further ensure any bacteria is eliminated. If you had raised any of these concerns at the time we could certainly have had the opportunity to investigate and rectify if needed.
