Views were great. Hotel is dated. Restaurant is mediocre. That being said, if you're here to experience the volcano, want a room with a view, and want to have a convenient launching point for frequent hikes, you can't beat volcano house.
The volcano house has its "rules". Our daughter was concerned that there was no doorman to help with the luggage. There are no TV's in the rooms. The desk clerk can be a bit snarky.

We had a room with 2 double beds...so 4 was no problem. The walk in closet could easily fit a pack n play or kids size air mattress if one of your 5 is a child. I'm not sure if they have any rules about extra guests.

1/2 of the rooms on the first floor face the parking lot. You can request a "crater view" room, but be aware that these "view" rooms are going to cost a bit more. Second floor has much better views. At night the view of the glow from the lava lake is amazing.
