The continental breakfast was a bit basic, with small supplies quickly running out and slow to be replenished. One morning, we upgraded to the full English for £5 each, which was very good. The coffee was 2 small cups each and one slice of toast each, and we were not asked if we wanted more. Ten double rooms but just one banana and one orange in the fruit bowl. No yogurt, basically just cereals and pastries.
The hotel's location was good, with an easy walk to town and the ferry to Southampton, and the room was large and comfortable with a good view. It's a shame that it just felt like they were skimping on everything they could save a few pennies on. One toilet roll and tiny one-use bottles of bath toiletries.
Decor of room and stair area a little tired and could benefit from updating. Plus a few more home comforts in the room ie more that one spare loo roll and a few hangers in the wardrobe (only one there), but room was clean and attended to each day. Just need a few more homely touches and updating to rival chain hotels.
Breakfast was cereal, pastries, toast etc with option to purchase cooked breakfast at only £5. I would add £5 to the room cost and provide cooked breakfast option at no cost, this would look like a better deal.
Would use again but a better room.
The rest of our party arrived – all greeted by surly staff. The ensuing lunch was painful beyond reproach, the staff were unfriendly, the service was abysmally slow and quite frankly most of the food was inedible. The roast lunches they served up looked like they had been cooked last Sunday. The scampi was soggy and the chicken burger was tough in a soggy bun. The crowning glory was the treacle tart (good for tarmacking roads) and the crème brulee had a top that could have been used as a lethal weapon and could not be crushed with a hammer! Sorry, but this place needs a damn good manager, a decent chef and some staff with a couple of ounces of personality between them.
If it was not for the fact that it was my uncle’s birthday I would have made more of a point whilst I was in the restaurant but at 91 I did not want to upset him (by the way, he thought the service in particular was slow and unfriendly)
The room was cheaply decorated, Carpet looked dated and smelt old and musty! Curtains were really tacky and failed to keep out the light of Christmas lights outside. On top of the £160 we were expected to pay for cooked breakfast options which were so so.
We considered staying another night but were in such discomfort when we woke we decided to take the alternative option of sleeping on my parents blow up mattress which I’m sure will be of equal comfort and at no expense.
I am all for supporting small business and appreciate that this must be an exceptionally difficult time for hospitality but this was not acceptable.
2 stars because the staff were at least friendly and the room felt clean.
The stay was average but the property needs extensive work to bring it up to the standard you would expect surrounded with the property’s it has around it.
