We stayed at the Downe Arms Hotel in June using an 'Activity Superstore' voucher we received as a gift. Firstly, we wouldn't recommend Activity Superstore as their whole booking method is ridiculous, having to provide 3 different dates, not ideal when you're trying to plan a break at a specific time of year!

The Downe Arms hotel seemed like the best choice out of a poor selection of hotels available in the North East however, we were pleasantly surprised on arrival at how nice the hotel looked and it's location. It was really peaceful and due to COVID the hotel was very quiet. Check in was very straightforward and the receptionist was very helpful and polite.

As the weather was unusually hot and sunny we got a drink from the bar and went and sat outside (the barman came across as quite abrupt and not very welcoming). The outside space surrounding the hotel is a great place to sit and relax.

I guess as nice as this hotel is to look, we felt somewhat disappointed at being given what was probably the smallest room in the hotel, it was clean and comfortable and alright for a 2 night stay however, there was very little room to move around, the view was poor and it was in need of updating. It would have been a nice gesture from the hotel to either give us a complimentary upgrade or offer a discount on an upgrade given how quiet the hotel was, this would have been a nice incentive for us to book a return visit.

We never ate in the restaurant during our stay so we can't comment on that but sadly there wasn't a huge incentive to do so, breakfast was an expensive additional extra and evening meals appeared quite expensive too.

Would we stay again? Probably as it's a beautiful country hotel with so much potential, but it definitely needs a little tlc. And perhaps for the location as it's great for visiting the surrounding area including Scarborough, Whitby, Filey and Robin Hoods Bay however, we would definitely want a better room than what we had.

Oh and somebody please stop those church bells (adjacent to the hotel) ringing every hour of the day!!

We booked the Downe Arms a few weeks back informing them we would like 2 night for our anniversary weekend.
When we arrived we were given our key and went up to the room. Inside this beautiful room was 2 single beds! We laughed and went back to reception. The lady we spoke to was very apologetic and explained the mix up. We were given another room which was excellent, king size bed, en suite bathroom with shower. Robes and towels. The windows looked out the front of the building with an amazing view.
We ate in the restaurant and the food was very tasty and filling. The staff were always friendly and polite. Breakfast was included in the room price and was fresh and tasty. There was a wedding on the Saturday night and we were not disturbed by the sound of the wedding party. There were a few loud people as they came up past our room but this did not last long.
We had a lovely anniversary weekend and would definitely visit again.

I have wanted to go here for years and my friend took me for a belated birthday 🎁 treat lunch...
It was a beautiful sunny day but couldn’t find any dedicated disabled parking so she dropped me off at the front door while she parked up, and in I went with my walking stick.... into a wonderful sumptuous colourful clean and Covid free / very organised lovely environment!
A man in a mask jumped up and offered to help me ... I’m afraid I didn’t get his name, but he was very kind and friendly. Then Paula arrived and looked after us from there!
She kindly let me choose a bench seat, and helpfully explained the paper menus etc
I really fancied the home made veg soup and my friend had the smoked salmon.
I asked Paula if I could just have some normal brown bread rather than the “crusty” bread that it came with, she very kindly organised this with a lovely air of it
not being a problem, bless her.
My friends baby son was in a lovely wooden high chair and was making a little noise ( like they do) which as it was so quiet I could see was making her a little stressed but we kept him occupied as best we could. The soup was Amazing and my friend said her salmon sandwich was epic and cane with a massive salad and crisps. My friend had a beautiful pot of tea and I had a lovely pot of fresh coffee, which was gorgeous and was served with a proper elegant cup and saucer, which I miss so much!
We then had a pudding too, I had sticky toffee pudding and she checked the pavlova was gluten free which it was :) so had that. It was so huge she could only eat half so we asked Paula for it to be made into a take out, which she did.
We didn’t want to leave but as my friend had to collect her other son from school we had to leave but not before I asked for the disabled loo.
Paula again was very kind and helped me find it bless her and it was spotlessly clean and again very elegant, which most disabled toilets are not but this one was!
So for my first ever time I was so impressed with everything that I told Paula I would be doing a review so I hope that she gets some praise and recognition for the excellent time we were given 🙏

I purchased a two night stay with afternoon tea as a present for my partner for Christmas 2019. This was the first opportunity we had for using it, but I must say that the hotel were very accommodating with respect to dates and organising our booking, and communication with the staff was excellent.
Upon arrival (after a six hour drive) we were very pleasantly impressed with the aspect of the hotel. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our room after being offered the facility of evening meals and breakfasts.
The room was small but perfectly adequate, providing everything we needed. There were tea and coffee making facilities within the room, accompanied by a tasty biscuit offering. The furniture was simple, tasteful and clean, a TV was provided and the bed was extremely comfortable. Inside the wardrobe there was a small heater, a fan and an iron.
The en-suite was again small but perfectly adequate, providing a walk in shower rather than a bath. There were plenty of large fluffy towels and very pleasant complimentary toiletries.
Dinner that evening was from a reduced menu (because of COVID-19 restrictions) but the choice was more than enough. The food was fresh, delicious and beautifully presented. In the morning the breakfast choice was plentiful, with the Eggs Royale being outstandingly delicious. On our second evening we had the full menu to choose from, but I had enjoyed the food so much the first night that I stuck to the same choice. My partner chose differently on both nights and was equally impressed.
The staff went out of their way to accommodate us with the afternoon tea. The table had been layed out beautifully with gorgeous antique china and the selection of sandwiches, pastries, scones and cakes was enormous! There was even a delicious, tiny little Eton Mess dessert for each of us. I was still quite full from my tempting Eggs Royale in the morning, and so, knowing that we had at least another six hour drive home ahead of us, the staff very kindly offered to box up some of the afternoon tea so that we could take it with us for later.
The staff were, without exception, friendly, bubbly and very helpful and informative. Issy and Emma deserve a special mention for going above and beyond.
We adored the setting of the hotel, being in a small village, so extremely peaceful and tranquil, but still close to the larger towns of Scarborough and Whitby. There is an abundance of activities and pursuits close at hand to keep you entertained. We are 100% certain that we will return, hopefully for longer next time. Honestly, it was as near perfect a vacation as I could have hoped to have after months of social distancing. I cannot recommend the Downes Arms highly enough.

A bit like Fawlty Towers! The main guy running around hardly got time for you. Afternoon tea on arrival was average, couldn't eat it all so left for our room, expecting the left overs to be boxed up and sent up to our room but it all just disappeared. Room was cosy, noise travels but I guess that's why they supply ear plugs! Had breakfast the first morning. This was the downside, we were room only rate so had to pay £11.95 each for a breakfast that was no better than Morissons Cafe! For that kind of money I would have expected at least local sourced sausage and golden yoke eggs, but it was all just mass catering quality. Didn't have breakfast second morning, went to Morissons! Had a drink the one night in the bar, then asked Mr Fawlty for some more drinks and he just went and pulled the same again even though we wanted something else! We told him and he laughed, apologised then didn't offer to change it and stuck it on our bill. Another £10 for something we didn't want or ask for. I really don't mind paying for quality and good service but unfortunately this was far from it. Such a shame because it's a beautiful place to stay.

My wife and I stayed here for a couple of nights and were generally pleased with our visit. We had a 'superior' room located at the front of the main building and despite the main road it was relatively quiet thanks to the secondary glazing fitted around the original sash windows. The bed was spacious and comfortably and the bathroom clean with good shower. We chose the included breakfast which was a choice of buffet items: cereals, toast, pastries etc and a number of choices for cooked to order items. Overall quite adequate for setting out for a day on the coast or moors. The location of Wykeham is ideal for exploring Scarborough, Whitby, Filey and the North York Moors. The only thing we were a little disappointed in was the evening meal we tried one night. A bit dry and no doubt re-heated and a bit short on vegetables/portion sizes. For the price we expected a bit more especially in Yorkshire! Overall though a nice place to stay with friendly staff.

This was a gift from our daughter and her partner, we were greeted by a lovely gentleman and lady at reception who showed us around and to our room. They explained where our dog was welcome and told us about a lovely woodland walk next door to walk our dog. They set a table aside in the bar area for us so we could have a drink and eat dinner and have our breakfast. The dinner was excellent and beautifully presented and very tasty and most of all very reasonably priced, breakfast there was a great choice and resourced locally. Our daughter had also booked afternoon tea and wow there was so much we didn’t finish it all, again very tasty and so prettily presented. The room was set privately at the back of the hotel and had its own entrance so very handy for taking the dog out and adjacent to the dog walk area. Plenty of hooks and places to keep the luggage etc and had tea and coffee making facilities, the bathroom was big and both bathroom and bedroom were spotless. The staff we encountered were all very friendly and always stopped to say hello to our Labrador. I would definitely be staying here again and I would highly recommend this truly wonderful dog friendly hotel. Thank you Phil for accommodating us.

Without doubt the worst place I have stayed. My wife and I were given a “superior room” on night one as the standard rooms were unavailable. This room was decent, 2nd night we moved to room 212 ! Do not under any circumstances stay in this, it contained a double bed , tv on the wall, a 2 foot hanging rail and the kettle on the window sill. It was tiny , dirty, noise was terrible from room upstairs (not the guests fault) creaking floor boards. We complained the answer from the owner who is very rude and abrupt, it’s a 17 century building what do u expect ! We queried the cost , answer , I’ve just lost £600k because of COVID 🤷‍♂️. Breakfast was bang average, make ur own Tea, toast etc. Save urself heartache stay away from this place. Lastly church bell goes off every hour, unbelievable!

We stayed here 7 years ago and was impressed so definitely idea to return after a much needed break.

Well the room we were given was dirty, small bed was not comfy and felt like we had been stuck in the back. We were very disappointed. The restaurant chairs were very old, you could feel all the springs when you sat down. The food was OK but very greasy. One evening we sat down and decided to have steak after been handed the menu to then be told by a rude waitress no its all gone and then she stood there putting us under pressure to choose something else. We then ask for lemoade and got soda water. I know these are all small things but soon added up.

We can honestly say we will not return, one positive the gentleman on reception was so lovely and polite both days asked our plans and made us welcome. It's a shame for the rest.

Warm welcome on arrival, staff very helpful advising of hotel restaurant/bar facilities and local areas of interest.

We stayed in a loft room which was really well arranged with plenty of storage and a good sized bathroom. The room included also included an iron/board and fan which was a lovely touch as well as the standard kettle tea/coffee.

Linens were good quality and fresh smelling and the room was really clean.

Breakfast was really good quality with lots of it too and a great selection of cereals if also required. Yes, you make your own toast and serve your own drinks but that’s hardly a drama.

We ate in the restaurant both evenings. Food was freshly cooked, piping hot and delicious. Staff were a little rushed but as soon as you asked for something it was taken care of promptly.

A lovely stay, in a great location. Recommend to all.

There is a good self service buffet for cereals, fruit, meats, cheeses etc but hot food severed by staff. Good service 8.30 to 9.30 at weekends.
