My husband and I booked a two night dinner, bed and breakfast stay at the end of January to celebrate our retirements.

We had a lovely room (Room 2) which was spacious, well thought out and overlooked the quay. The bed was very comfortable with lovely crisp linen and the temperature of the room was perfect. We often find the lighting too dark in hotels but it was lovely and bright in the room and we were able to read our books easily.
The bathroom didn't have a curtain/ blind which was a little unnerving but the glass was frosted so hopefully no one could see in !! The shower was very powerful.

The only 'negatives' were that the tea/ coffee tray was a little basic (uht milk and the biscuits promised on the website were missing ) and that at night we could hear the music from downstairs until about 11pm. Also the dressing gowns were too small (I'm a size 12/14 and my husband is medium) and a bit hard and scratchy.

Dinner on the first night was slightly disappointing - we both had monkfish curry that was beautifully presented, but overcooked. We also made the mistake of ordering starters not realising that we would get bread for the table so we were both too full to finish our mains. We skipped starters on the second night and managed mains and desserts, both of which were absolutely delicious. Breakfast on both mornings was average but there was a very good selection.

Overall, we had a lovely stay.

Saturday evening dinner with friends. Read about the Mistley Thorn in the times newspaper and was pleased to see it was not far from home, funny how some of the best places are right under one's nose!
The food was fantastic, I can't praise it highly enough, we started with oysters, crab, cod cheek goujons and scallops. All beautifully fresh and cooked to perfection. Main course was even better, hot shellfish, lemon sole, monkfish curry and more. Squid I always think is a good test of a fish restaurants cooking, if it tastes like rubber, well, this didn't beautifully succulent and tasty.
All 4 diners were unanimous in our praise and satisfaction for a fantastic evening out.
The service was efficient and friendly, even with face masks! The only minor comment was they ran out of the wine we were drinking, but we swiftly moved on to an equally quafable bottle.
The Mistley Thorn is a true gem, great fish cooked very well in a nice dining room - we also felt it was great value for money.
As most places are still operating at reduced capacity, my advice is get booking soon!

The seafood, much of it local, is cooked to perfection by the resident chef. Of note were the starters of prawn cocktail and fritto misto. Forget any prawn cocktail you’ve ever had before, this was like a spiky Bloody Mary prawn cocktail and it was fab. We also had the sardines starter, the smell alone was worth it. Mains we had seafood mixed grill, consisting of skate wing, sardine, sea bass, monkfish, prawn and winkles sitting in a shallow chowder and samphire. We got sourdough bread to dip in the chowder to mop up. We also had the sea bass main and the slip soles. I must add there were four of by the way! Well prepped cocktails, as good as any central London cocktail bar and an excellent wine list, reasonably priced to be fair. A well stocked bar meant I could have a decent calvados with my cheese platter. High praise for the kitchen but as good were front of house, a young team who were really attentive, engaging and on the ball. We had a comfortable one night stay in the annexe after a very agreeable evening (more calvados, espresso martinis, negronis) followed by a breakfast of classic full English and smoked haddock with poached eggs and sourdough toast. It was a fantastic one nighter and the best thing is it’s only 35 minutes away. Now we’ve found you expect us back!

I booked this restaurant with rooms for a surprise birthday treat for my husband. I opted for the dinner bed and breakfast rate. Neither of us had visited the area before and I booked on the strength of the excellent reviews. Our room was in the annexe and was clean, comfortable and spacious. The tea and coffee tray was pretty basic for a £140 per night room and perhaps a cafetière and some biscuits could be provided.

The meal in the busy restaurant was very good. The starters and main courses were delicious. Portions were generous and with the lovely fresh bread at the start we sadly could only manage the affogato which was just right. The waitresses were very friendly, attentive and helpful. However, I did have to ask for a finger bowl, a dish for the shells and for a spoon for the liquor with my shell fish. All these should have been automatic for a restaurant like this. There was also an issue with the second bottle of tap water. There was a small black item sitting in the bottom of the bottle but more worryingly some white mould was floating in the water that we didn’t notice until I went to pour my second glass of water. I discreetly talked to the waitress and pointed out the things in the water and mentioned we had already drunk some before noticing. She was very apologetic and said she would inform her manager. She took the bottle to the young man behind the bar who made no attempt to speak to us or apologise. He immediately poured the water away and when I said I was not very happy with what I had found he somewhat glibly said it was only a tea leaf. It did not make much sense - how would a tea leaf find its way into a bottle for water? I also mentioned the white mould but he was dismissive of that making me feel as if I was in the wrong somehow.

When we left and I received the bill it was for over £300! I was expecting something around £220! I immediately queried it and the guy behind the bar then asked me to detail everything we had at dinner and it turned out that some other items had been inadvertently included and there was also confusion over the dinner bed and breakfast rate. The necessary adjustments were made but as with the issue the night before I was made to feel at fault somehow. Staff need to deal with customer complaints in a more professional manner. Such a pity because otherwise our stay would have been very good.

So my husband and I set off for a meal tonight. I ordered the roast beetroot fennel watercress starter which was ok I was almost finished when I noticed something crawling across my plate. I know I should have photographed it but I was so horrified I didn’t think that clearly. My stomach churned. It was a tiny worm thing I don’t know what it was but it shouldn’t have been on my plate
The waitress was apologetic but said ‘well it happens’ does it ? The maitre de apologised and I was told I wouldn’t be charged for the dish with the creepy crawly thing in it. Well hey thanks for that. Like I’d pay for it anyways.
My husband ate on his own I couldn’t face food right then. But and listen up Thorn at mistley just one offer of compensation, a drink on the house maybe would have been appropriate I really feel sorry was not good enough tonight Left feeling disappointed and still not hungry 🐛

Previous visits for lunch have been impressive. On this occassion the main course - chicken schnitzel was overdone and consequently too dry. The meal lacked a sauce or jus, although a small dollop of mustard sauce was just visible. I also got the impression that the waiting staff had had better days. Functional but little in the way of endearment.
Nice starter and other people seemed to be enjoying themselves but I think I'll give this place a miss next time in Mistley.

We have been staying here from time to time for the past ten years and each time I have felt it gets better and better.
Our family-of-five's most recent stay was as lovely as every: delicious food, lovely rooms.
The staff were extremely helpful when we made several last minute changes and were able to improve on our final request so that my husband and I found ourselves in our favourite room with our favourite view.

The food was fresh, properly prepared and great value for money. The Clams & Terrine were so tasty, along with homemade breads. Roast Beef & Roast Pork loin, perfectly cooked, with the best cooked vegetables and fluffy, crispy roast potatoes imaginable. The staff were as special as the food. We highly recommend it!

We grew to quite like the Mistley Thorn, but think it is important to clear a few things up: Firstly, the lovely building that comes up on Trip Advisor – a swan in the foreground and 2/3 brick 1/3 cream rendered brick is NOT the Mistley Thorn. It is in fact the building across the road from the Mistley. The Mistley Thorn hotel is a corner building with a brown door on the left, as shown on a google search for their website, but it is now a gray coloured building. Secondly, for all intents and purposes, it does not have a car park. There is a space at the back for two cars, with very narrow, awkward access. You do need to be comfortable about leaving your car parked overnight on the main road, which is both busy and noisy. We had room 7, mentioned in the reviews, not realising just how low and restrictive the sloping ceilings were. We are 5/8 and 5/10 tall, and we both banged our head several times just moving around the room. We did not find the part of Mistley that the hotel is in that attractive, and the estuary views are, in our opinion, not very scenic. As you can probably gather, we were disappointed when we arrived.

However, there is good news. Firstly, all the staff were very pleasant and professional, absolutely first class. Secondly the room was immaculate on arrival, and refreshed to top standards each day. I have saved the best till last – the food. The eating areas have a real buzz, both guests and locals eat here, and it is has a really good atmosphere. The food itself was always excellent, and that included the breakfast.

We stayed four nights, we were out and about during the day, but always looked forward to going down to eat in the evening.
