I simply can't speak highly enough of 1863. We stayed as a family of 4 adults in rooms 5 and 6 and had the tasting menu with paired wines on the second evening.

You can tell that the owners of this place care about their guests, the attention to detail here makes a huge difference.

Most places offer tea/coffee in the rooms but here the tea bags are good quality (tea pigs) and they provide good quality coffee in coffee bags, not just cheap instant coffee. They take an eco friendly approach, refilled locally sourced toiletries, chilled water and milk in refillable flasks, washable makeup remover towel, all fantastic touches. I've also never been anywhere where they have a night light installed just next to the toilet in the ensuite so you don't disturb your partner in the middle of the night. Something I never knew I wanted in my life! Comfortable bed, nicely decorated rooms, good (controllable) temperature, just couldn't fault it at all.

We had drinks before dinner and I was pleased to see an imaginative selection of non-alcoholic drinks (inc. Seedlip and mocktails) surprisingly hard to find often.

We had the 7 course taster menu with paired wines. Every course was beautifully prepared and presented, each plate of food and glass of wine was WAY to easy to consume, utterly delicious. I can't wait to go back to try this menu again in the future.

Breakfast on both mornings was excellent, a small but perfectly formed breakfast menu which between us, we sampled most of. All fresh, well cooked, high quality ingredients, very filling and a great way to start the day.

I'd also like to mention the staff. A lot of reviews you will read will say - nice, attentive, hard working staff but the 1863 team are all of these things plus a little something extra. They are professional but personable in equal measure and made us feel well looked after in a really genuine way. I was also extremely pleased to see mask wearing and Covid measures consistently being taken seriously, much appreciated as a clinically vulnerable person.

This is a small but perfectly formed place in a lovely Lake District spot. I couldn't recommend this place more highly.

I don't feel as though i can explain well enough how incredible of a place this is, not only to eat in, but to stay in. Me and my girlfriend stayed here on new years eve and new years day, all i can say is we couldn't of had a better time.

When we walked in to 1863 the staff were so welcoming and you instantly feel as though you are walking into a family home, it has a lovingly warm feel to it, as do all the people who work there. We stayed in room 3 and it was a beautiful little room, which met our needs perfectly; well kept, modern and comfortable.

We decided to book in for the seven course meal they were offering on new years eve, it was £85 pp, however, THE best food i have ever tasted. It was impeccable, the only thing i could comment on was the portion sizes, but the quality and taste of the food just won us over. The service throughout the meal was attentive, courteous and outstanding, they couldn't have run new years eve any better than what they did.

The location of the property is very well situated, easy to get around, via car obviously. It's surroundings offer beautiful walks around the lake and incredibly scenic photos with some nice local pubs just across the road.

This is one of the best places i've had the pleasure of staying in overall between the service, staff, food, room, cleanliness and value. Cannot recommend enough!

I’ll start by saying we’re not the easiest to please, so that 1863 delivers on every level is high praise indeed.
Firstly as accommodation the room is compact, though smart and met all our needs. I need two things from a room - a great sleep and a strong shower, 1863 delivered 10/10 on both.
Dinner was high quality fine dining- I’m fortunate to eat in Michelin starred restaurants at home, and 1863 is on a par with those, finest ingredients expertly prepared and presented. I appreciate knowledgable staff who introduce the food, and the team have a clear passion for their roles. Pricing is mid range with some great wine choices which are again sensibly priced. You won’t get a burger & chips, though if that’s your requirement there are plenty of alternatives to choose. What there isn’t are other high quality eateries matching 1863’s professional, welcoming excellence.
Breakfast also proved to be a delight, with great choice and great service.

1863 has got it all - Great rooms, an outstanding kitchen, friendly not overbearing staff and a price point just right.
Visit, and you won’t be disappointed, we’ll certainly be back

Beautiful bed and breakfast in a lovely position in the village. Welcome from front of house was very warm and friendly and were able to check in at 2pm, which was a delight. We were presented with a £10 voucher for a discount for the evening meal, which was a lovely touch. Room itself was very cosy, clean and well equipped. The added extra of robes was great edition to relax in the room even further. The three-course evening meal was absolutely delightful and again the waiting staff were superb. Slept lovely and bed was super comfortable. My cooked Breakfast was very delicious and the choice of continental options was varied.

It’s a real shame that all of the above was clouded by our experience on check-out. Firstly when I came to hand in our key with the owner, I expected to be asked if we had a nice stay and everyone was satisfactory? I queried that the £10 hadn’t been taken off our bill the previous evening and if she would be so kind to check. She seemed rather annoyed that I had asked and continued to tell me that she’s not had chance to check the till from the night before. I said it wasn’t a problem and I would wait. I waited in reception and chatted to another guest. The lady then came over to me and waved a £10 in front of me and said ‘here you are’, then quickly scuttled off into the dining room. No ‘sorry’, ‘thank you for custom’, just utter rudeness. The man I was chatting to looked really embarrassed for me and my husband and I left felling utterly disappointed and rather angry.

Kindness and being pleasant doesn’t cost anything. Please try and remember this with future guests.

We loved this place. The staff were all absolutely charming. The food was seriously good. We have been to Michelin restaurants which were not as clever. An absolute delight. For overnight visitors our room was small with everything we needed and it is important to remember that this is a restaurant with rooms, not a hotel. Breakfast was also excellent. Maybe we should give a bad review to be sure of a room next time - we will be back !

We made the journey from Cheshire and stayed on Sunday 23/10/22.
The room and bathroom were excellent, as was the bed and linen.
We ate in the restaurant (choosing the 3 course menu at £65pp) and were delighted with the choice, quality and appearance of the food and with the service. The chef is producing some fabulous dishes and we agree with a previous reviewer that a Michelin Star is within reach.
There was much to interest us on the Wine List, including the option to have a number of wines in a 50ml serving- perfect for my wife who likes variety but not too much quantity.
The breakfast was also very good- I had the Cumbrian Breakfast and my wife had the Eggs Benedict.
We will certainly return (and have already recommended it to a friend, who would have gone this weekend had it not been fully booked).
All in all, this is a little Cumbrian gem.

My wife found this place while researching places in the Lakes, and we are so glad she did. The room was cozy and the bed comfortable. The evening meal was exceptional, presentation was amazing. If you just saw the plates you might think the courses were small, but I can tell you it was perfect and we felt nicely full after the meal but not overloaded. The wine pairings were excellent and worth the money, especially the dessert wines which were a real eye opener. Breakfast was very good as well. The staff were lovely and very helpful, my wife was not sure she would like the Austrian wine and they brought her a sizable taster to try, excellent service and the explanations of the fwwod and wine were wonderful. We will return.

We stayed 2 nights and ate breakfast but not dinner. The room was quite large and on the top floor, with a seating area which was pleasant and welcome. The super king bed was comfy and the bathroom was roomy too. Despite being in the centre of the village and the room overlooking the main road, it was peaceful day and night. We did make the mistake of leaving all the windows open one night for fresh air (quite a warm evening) and we came back to room full of black flies which we took time to remove from the walls. This is not the fault of the hotel, of course, but it might be a good idea to warn guests of this so that windows can be left ajar and not wide open. Breakfast was absolutely excellent, totally faultless, great choices and impeccable service. We were lucky enough to see the Tour of Britain in the village whilst staying and the hotel were very kind about letting us use the car park across from the hotel after checking out. We walked Arthurs Pike after breakfast one day which is a super little walk straight from the hotel door.

We’ve enjoyed every minute staying in this beautiful hotel & restaurant, it really is quality from start to finish, everyone we met where so friendly and genuine, we were given room No.6 - really beautifully decorated and comfortable, lovely seated area and everything you need whilst there, quality tea & coffee, fresh water, good hairdryer and beautiful products to use in the bathroom from Pure Lakes. We had a stunning meal in the restaurant, the food was absolutely delicious and enjoyed the suggestion of wines to accompany our meal, absolutely loved the knowledge and enthusiasm of the lovely guy who looked after us, nothing was too much trouble. I could highly recommend to stay over and enjoy the experience. Breakfast was simply fantastic too, again a lovely member of staff made us feel really at home 😊
