Big house (former hospital), nice rooms: clean and comfortable, nice and friendly stuff, priceless wi-fi, loads of public rooms (tv, kitchen, billard, darts, books etc.), quiet location, tourist information board (e.g. with times of low tide at cathedral caves)

To stay in a one hundred year old hospital and appreciate the work that has gone into the restoration inspired me. We spent some time exploring the building and reminiscing the history and thinking of the stories this building must be able to tell. We missed out on coming up against any ghosts that are reported to be there but...

The unexpected bad weather could dampen any holiday. But if its bad weather you're experiencing then there is no better place to be that at Jan's lodge and campsite. The place is large but warm and friendly, kids are even allowed to scooter down the old wooden hospital corridors. There are three sitting areas so you watch TV or sit...

Camped for two nights. Facilities are amazing, everything you need and more. VERY dog friendly, our dog had a better time than us I think. Weather was not great for us but lots of areas to relax at lodge when not out sightseeing. Jan was very friendly and helpful.

We had the matrons flat as we were a party of 3 adults and 2 small children. Very clean and comfortable and well equiped. Nice to have space to spread out and we enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. A good central location to explore the Catlins and we look forward to a return visit.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I am glad you enjoyed the Matrons Flat upstairs. Lots of space in the main building for the children to have some fun especially with our inclement summer weather this year! We look forward to seeing you again. Regards JAN

Awesome historical building (a converted hospital) with lots of character. Jan who owns the place was awesome and took the time to make us feel at home as well as giving us great advice about the local attractions. The bunk beds were a bit squeaky which was a shame but overall the character of this place and the fantastic service...

If you want cheap, simple and a awesome location for the Caitlins this is it. Awesome place to wander and explore, you get a sense of the history of the buildings and imagine the ghosts within when this was once a hospital and old folks home. Loved the quirky little lounges and rooms.

Quirky old building with great dining area, large kitchen. We stayed on a powered pitch but there is a wide variety of accommodation in this YHA which used to be a hospital. Really friendly helpful owners. Great wifi compared with all the other campgrounds we stayed at in Riverton, Invercargill, and Catlins

We are single mums with children, wanted to try out camping the kiwi style.... only to find that we didn't bring enough tents. The staff was friendly. He got us another tent - mega huge one that can contain all 7 of us, he even set the tent up for us. The staff made sure we were okay living in...

We stayed here as it was the only place with rooms available in the area that we wanted so we were pleasantly surprised. Yes, it's basic as you'd expect from an ex youth hostel. However, the room was comfortable and had an ensuite. The communal kitchen and lounge were useful. Wifi didn't work in our room but was OK in...
