We stayed here some years ago but it has now changed hands. It is a comfortable hotel with lovely lounges and open fires and stunning views across the Tamar Valley from the dining room. Staff are very pleasant and welcoming and everywhere is spotless. Bedrooms are very attractive and a good bathroom. The dining room has been modernised and instead of the tables having white tablecloths they have been replaced by wooden tables placed all in a line. There were fresh flowers on the tables and candles. The walls are painted in pale grey with dark grey blinds at the windows. It just looks out of place in an old property and in our opinion it lacked atmosphere. We were rather disappointed with some of the food too and while we have eaten in many fine dining establishments in the UK and abroad this just wasn't to our taste at all. There were only 3 starters, mains and desserts, I had informed the staff when booking that I had dietary requirements and the receptionist confirmed them when we checked in. When it came to desserts I was told that they were unaware that I was lactose intolerant so I ended up on both nights with a tart that had been bought in for vegetarians. On the last night, most of the items on the menu were unsuitable as they contained gluten and/or lactose. I didn't feel that much consideration had been given to providing my dietary requirements even though they had been informed in good time. we would like to go again as it's such a beautiful place but were rather put off by the menu.

Hotel's Favourite
I stayed for one night with my husband on our way to the North Devon coast. On arrival we received a very warm welcome. Our room was comfortable, quiet and spacious. We really appreciated the tea and coffee making facilities and the cold milk. The room had everything, even an iron and board discreetly tucked away. I loved the bright colour scheme, so different to the drab beiges and greys seen in so many hotels nowadays. It was really uplifting. The roof terrace is a great place for drinks, with a wonderful view towards Bodmin Moor. The hotel grounds are quite extensive and well kept. The whole hotel has a well cared for feel and all the staff we met seemed to take a pride in their work. The breakfast was very good (apart from the mushroom with the cooked breakfast; no taste). I felt it was very competitively priced for bed and breakfast. My only regret was that we couldn't stay longer.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review of our hotel. I am delighted that we were able to please you. if you enjoyed the south facing terrace of your room with views over the Tamar Valley and of Cornwall beyond, then you will love it if you return next Spring after the terraces have been thoroughly updated and refurbished. Oh, and I shall ask the chefs to look into an alternative supplier for our breakfast mushrooms. Once again thank you !

Our second stay and did not disappoint. They can't control the weather! This is a super small hotel. Food very good but.....the staff are fantastic, they make it so homely and actually care about you. Great sitting room...etc etc can't wait to return Wish I didn't live a 5 hrs drive away. Btw if you book the best rooms in main house, room 4 has tricky steps. So ask for room 3 if thats an issue. Management aware.

This is a super hotel in a wonderful location not far from Tavistock. As with all very good hotels, there is exceptional attention to detail. The rooms are very well appointed. Ours had great views over the valley. With large grounds there is plenty to explore. We had dinner and really enjoyed the meal. The dinner, bed and breakfast deal is particularly good value. We had our dogs with us and they seemed to thoroughly enjoy their stay. It probably had something to do with the breakfast sausage that they were given! Special place to stay at if you are in this part of the world.

We came here for the first night of our honeymoon, it did not disappoint, we felt very spoilt as did our dog who was with us , she even had a gift pack . The bath and shower were magnificent and the bed was fabulous. The food was stunning .Although the weather wasn’t not great we were able to explore the grounds in the morning and they were lovely .

We have dined here several times over the years and always came away impressed with the quality of service and attention to detail. was not the case when we visited recently. On arrival there was nobody to greet us so we made our own way in to the seating area. A young waiter then came to offer us drinks and give us menu's, at no point did he offer to take our coats so we ended up hanging them off the back of our chairs. No offer of a wine menu or asked if we would like more drinks. At no point during our meal were we asked if everything was to our satisfaction. These may appear to be trivial but this is what we expect as minimum , it seems there is a lack of staff training. The young waiter was very nice and polite so I'm not blaming him for the slip in standards, but the apparent lack of training. The food was excellent, no complaints there. We came away dissappointed by the lack of attention to detail that is expected from an establishment that is renowned for its excellence and undecided if we would return in the future.

We attended the hotel to renew our wedding vows. We could not fault the hotel, the food, the entire team, the rooms and of course the cleanliness and the attention to detail. The whole stay was simply a wonderful experience and an exceptional dog friendly environment. We did not have to ask for anything as all was covered. We met the owner in the bar and he was simply charming and dedicated to his guests. I cannot recommend the hotel enough and we have just re-booked today for September! Fabulous find!

Left us feeling something was missing, that is why we can’t give you Excellent. Staff very friendly but where is that lovely welcome you use to get when arriving, the poor receptionist was busy on the phone when we arrived we waited patiently with another couple. The owner arrived and asked if we were checking in we said yes and he disappeared, perhaps he could have said welcome to The Horn of Plenty let me see if I can get someone else to help you ?? I guess he did go and find someone because another member of staff did then arrive. We stayed in the coach house room 7 and the room was lovely but the bathroom very tired and would expect better a lot of black mould around the bath and the floor tiles need cleaning not up to standard also instead of packaged biscuits some homemade would be a nice touch. Our room was buy the entrance to the coach house the door doesn’t close properly because it is swollen the number of people that tried to slam it closed, please can you get that mended. Also we heard every conversation when some guests arrived back to their room perhaps a note to say quiet please respect other guests might help, the room above has very squeaky floor boards so if you are a light sleeper don’t have this room. Arriving for dinner it was nice to sit in the drawing room for drinks would have been nice to have a few olives with drinks would have been happy to pay for this. Also Jeremy, lovely that you sat to chat with us , but probably not a good idea to share with guests that you have been banned from driving for 6 months (not something I would be proud of) also we didn’t appreciate the feeling that you were trying to push us to book for Valentine’s weekend (quote I can do you a deal!)you need to work on your hosting it did put a bit of a sour note to our evening . However chef thank you the food was excellant. We arrived for breakfast 8.40 there was nobody we had to hunt for a member of staff once they knew we were there they were lovely and the breakfast was amazing. One other point no tablecloths why? The tables were not cleaned properly at breakfast we sat on the round table that had a tablecloth and was lovely and clean but the table behind us which was set and ready for breakfast had crumbs on the table and on the floor, we were first into the restaurant. On driving out of the gates sadly we both said we wouldn’t return.
