We have just returned from the George hotel in Tintern in a dog friendly room.

We were given fresh milk on arrival for the room, milk is also left on your doorstep the following morning. No nasty little plastic milk jiggers!

The room was so nice , our Cairn Terrier loved that we were on the ground floor and loved that she could pop into the bar to socialise, this is a very dog friendly hotel.

The food we had was great, hats off to the kitchen team. HUGE thank you to Frank who quite frankly was everywhere we went in the hotel, he was there at 11am when we first arrived, checked us in at 3pm and made sure we were taken care of at dinner at 8pm, and low and behold guess who turned up breakfast time? Yes, Frank. He is great Manager and alongside Martin and Elijah big round of applause from us!

I would love to stay at this hotel for a week to explore more of the local area and pop over Offa's Dyke to Gloucestershire. The hotel is in a great location.

Thank you all, we will be back.

What a fantastic find. A really well presented property with a super ambiance. Originally a hotel, the relatively new owners have now re aligned the trade to a "pub with rooms. The bar was great, full of both locals and guests, the food was first class (high end pub food) and the owners and staff very welcoming. Most importantly, there were lots of little bits of "attention to detail". They even leave a small bottle of fresh milk on the doorstep of the rooms each morning, nothing was too much trouble.

After our car broke down on M5 and missing our time slot at Tintern Abbey, we were pleased to eventually arrive at the Royal George. I have to disagree with the previous comment about the lack of covid precautions. There was a hand sanitiser on the pillar outside the front door and a track & trace form at the front desk. The tables in the bar area and dining room were at least 2metres apart and the beer garden furniture was well spaced out.

We stayed in the Nightjar room which was really lovely and spacious. The bed was huge and very comfortable. Although we didn't have a bath, the shower was great with fabulous toiletries. The room was very clean and we had a sweet bottle of milk delivered to our door in the morning for our cup of tea.

The hotel is in a perfect location - 2 minute walk to Tintern Abbey which is the reason we went to Tintern. There's also a great walk which starts in the village and continues over the bridge. The breakfast was also delicious with a great choice.

We'd definitely stay here again but for longer next time.

The Wild Hare is set in a prime location in the heart of Tintern at the bottom of the Angidy Valley, a short walk from the Abbey and Wireworks Bridge. The building is handsome and imposing, with attractive gardens and grounds where guests can eat and relax outside. Inside, the décor in the dining areas is modern and stylish. The waiters / waitresses are pleasant and super helpful.

We stayed for four nights in the Wild Hare suite in the main building, at the front. Again it was stylishly furnished and fairly comfortable (although a few things could be improved – just small touches, too much to go into here). The Wifi was excellent which was essential as I had to work during our stay. So, lots of positives.

On the other hand, were a few things which detracted slightly from the overall experience. I think these can be easily remedied.

The door of the suite is located right next to the ladies’ toilets, at the top of the stairs. The door of the toilets was left open most of the time which was slightly unpleasant and meant privacy was compromised when you are entering and leaving the suite. A sign on the door would be excellent to remind guests to close the door to the toilets.

We were woken up early in the morning (around 5 am) by a delivery lorry which parked right underneath the bedroom window and kept its noisy engine running for over half an hour while it delivered its contents to the hotel. This resulted in a very poor night’s sleep and not what you expect when paying a premium price.

We were asked if we would like the room to be serviced and although we said yes, there was nothing during the four nights’ stay apart from a delivery of milk each morning and a change of towels on the final evening.

Finally, we had an unfortunate experience while dining there, when two of the dishes we had ordered were missing key ingredients. After pointing this out, after about 15 minutes the waitress brought out the remainder of the ingredients, albeit still missing two of the key elements of one dish. We were all very hungry and the service was generally quite slow, so we did not press the issue. At the end of the meal, I spoke to the duty manager and explained the situation very politely, but she tried to insist that I was mistaken and implied that it was my fault for eating the meal. She became quite animated and the whole encounter was rather unpleasant. She eventually offered a small discount (although when it came to settle up at the end of the stay, this was mysteriously absent from the bill – another oddity). I would gently suggest some customer service training, as it gives off a very poor impression when staff try to argue with customers who quite reasonably and politely highlight their expectation of a certain quality of meal, and that it is served as advertised on the menu.

All in all, a mixed experience, especially given the price of the accommodation. There were some very good aspects but definitely room for improvement in order to state confidently that it was excellent value for money overall.

Had a fabulous bank holiday weekend stay at this lovely hotel in picturesque Tintern. Our first stay away during the pandemic ,and felt very comfortable with the measures the hotel had put in place to keep their guests safe.
We stayed in The Olive room which was decorated to a high standard and was comfortable and spacious with a very nice bathroom with luxury toiletries which are available to purchase at reception.
The staff at breakfast were friendly ,helpful and attentive and there was a good choice of Cooked food to order ,
We had booked a table for evening meal in the modern well decorated restaurant and were able to benefit from the Governments eat out to help out scheme so this was an added bonus, the meal was cooked to perfection and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening..thank you...
The staff from the cleaning team to management were all friendly and helpful and I would not hesitate to recommend a stay at The Royal George to all those considering staying here....we will be back...
Special mention to Frank and wish him all the best in his new role!

Just back from an amazing stay in this lovely hotel, staff were great took out luggage in well before check in so we could go out and explore. The rooms were so nice my son and I had a 'lovely' room with a double and a single bed , the toiletries were full sized and smelt amazing , my son bought some for me from reception when we left 😊, the little bottle of milk left on doorstep every morning was so cute too.
Food in the wild hare was gorgeous I had the ribeye steak my son had the buttermilk chicken burger and we had forgotten it was eat out to help out so had a nice surprise when we saw the bill😄 and the breakfasts were really good too. We left deciding we will definitely be back, we are missing the peacefulness and beauty of tintern already and how it relaxed us that it was easy to forget covid for a little while🙂

We opted for their most expensive room with a balcony, the room was large with 2 easy chairs and 2 further chairs on the balcony. They provide a small bottle of fresh milk each morning and will top up later in the day if needed. That is necessary as no fridge in the room.

The garden has lots of tables and a very large canvas offering shelter from sun or rain.

On our 1st evening the service in the restaurant was somewhat disorganised but we must give credit that my husbands pint was quickly replaced when he pointed out it was not right. The food offering was balanced and we enjoyed our meals.

The next morning we went to breakfast at the booked time. Greeted well by the gentleman serving but we were surprised that the natural yoghurt offered had just the faintest smear of fruit, there were only about 6 small jars of raspberry jam that was the total. no other choice at all. On our last morning only 2 jars remained. Another guest asked for marmalade to be told they had none. This is really poor when they had several guests paying high prices for b & b. The cooked breakfast was fine.

On the 2nd morning their was not even the smear of fruit on the yoghurt which made me glad I had bought some fruit in a supermarket to put on mine!

We cannot recommend the Sunday roast as the cauliflower cheese was mostly broccoli with cheese grated on top and the roast potatoes were inedible. We acknowledge we were not charged for that meal.

So a mixed review but I hope they can sort the issues as overall it is a good place to stay. With regard to the meals only 1 of 3 disappointed and the breakfast buffet should be a simple fix, So get it done and I am sure 5 star will soon be warranted.

If you are to have a break in this area with your dog, I recommend it.
The room is a proper sized, well refurbished and quiet unless you have other guests passing by shouting nearby the window.
Breakfast variety is interesting, different from a normal English breakfast or continental one. Also well prepared for COVID-19.

Having really enjoyed 2018 celebrations at this hotel we booked for what was heralded as a 1920s themed night and at £80 a head we expected another great evening...we all dressed up.. especially the ladies ..but we’re totally let down
The dinner was very poor and took ages to arrive..the solo loop Act was playing 80s
Techno music throughout the meal!! then proceeded to blast out as if he was at a teen disco event..
The majority of the revellers retreated to the bar to escape...if that had been a 70s night surely 70s music would have been played
There was no sign of the best dressed competition ! and more importantly there was no traditional count down to 12.00 ...
A total shambles of a night that has left us considering legal action !,

Really disappointed with the New Year Gala dinner at the Royal George. The 7pm cocktails advertised before dinner were non existent. We were given a glass of something dreadful at 8pm when we went through to the dining area for dinner 🤢

The food was not up to the usual standard. My first mouthful of fish left me with many fish bones to contend with. The panacotta provided to cleanse the pallet was set hard and very sickly 🤢. Not very profession, our table didn’t even have a cloth in it.

The entertainment was far tooooooo loud and did not cater for the majority attending. Most guests left the room and went to sit in the bar area. It was a 1920s evening but with the modern entertainment booked the evening did not flow.

At £80 per head with a lot less on offer than previous years (no wine, champagne at midnight, part poppers) it was very poor value for money. Portion sizes were a lot smaller too. We have been to the Royal George for over 10 years to celebrate New Year but under the new ownership will not be returning.

I feel extremely disappointed with the evening and did not think it was value for money.
