Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were 3 families who booked this place for 3 nights to bring in new year. We reached a little after 6pm and left the place by 11:30 the same night. The place was nothing like in the pictures. We entered and found the whole place dirty, it was smelling, there was broken furniture, stained floors, flush not working. The ground floor toilet was horrible to use. The cabinets were dirty. The floor definitely not clean. We would definitely encourage the owner to have a deep clean and upgrade the place.

Anika is a great host who did everything to make my stay perfect. It was a great base to see Tintern. The place is cheerful and full of character. I only saw the reviews below which totally out of line with my experience.

I would not recommend this place at all. We stayed here recently as a family of 10. The property was not what we expected. On arrival we were met by anika who seemed nice at first. Unfortunately when we entered the property it was smelly dusty in places & alot of cobwebs around the place it also had a strong smell of stale urine. The upstairs was better & bedrooms cleaner but unfortunately one of the bedrooms had a loose tile leading to the ensuite which unfortunately we weren't made aware of & one of our family caught her foot on it & split her toes badly so was unable to get shoes on for the rest of our stay. The sad part of this is on reporting this to anika she didn't even reply or ask how her guest was. Since our return home one of us has recieved very negative messages from anika which I think is not a very good way to run a business.

Disappointed 3 night stay with family. 1st night I had an accident in bedroom. Loose tiles and cement on bathroom floor. Split 3 of my toes and the owner didn't even ask how i was. She was only concerned about my blood on the carpet and laughingly said I probably did it on a broken alcohol glass . Also smells of urine and damp

This house is not what was expected. The rooms downstairs were smelly of urine. Mice poison under settee. Bedrooms were ok apart from one ensuite having broken tiles in doorway leading to bathroom. One of us cut our toes on it, and the host never even acknowledged my message about it. When she finally did she's been quite negative about it and rude, harassing me through texts. There was no beautiful gardens as was stated, so we were unable to sit outside. And nowhere to put glass bottle rubbish or food bags so had to just bag bottles in recycled bags and black bags. And left food bags in conservatory. It's been renamed as a beautiful Wye valley riverside house now, so not a B&B anymore, but has the same host. Very strange

Awful. I have thought seriously about writing this as I don’t like bad reviews…. But people should be warned. 3 sheets of paper to be used in the loo, any more, put it in the bin…. yuk. Door to the bedroom didn’t shut properly, just bang it said mine hostess, it never did shut. The bathroom door snib didn’t work as half of it was missing. Breakfast inadequate, would you like toast we were asked, yes, ONE slice each appeared, and 1/2 a wine glass of fruit juice. It has parking, that’s about the only thing going for it. If we had booked a second night we wouldn’t have stayed & we will not be back.

This property is up for sale at auction on the 23rd.November. It is still offering rooms but that surely should not be allowed. We stayed there in June and it was awful, much as other reviewers have commented - overpowering dog smells, tatty unkempt decor, poor facilities and generally very shabby. The appearance and attitude of the owner was not encouraging and she seemed indifferent to our complaints about lack of hot water. Maybe the sale is the right conclusion to a sad enterprise.

We stayed here as a couple, with another couple last weekend as we had a day at the races. Anneka let us drop our bags off early, before checkin. She was a lovely lady and made us feel at home. We knew before we stayed that the breakfast option was cereals and fruit in our room. Both rooms were clean and tidy, clean beds and the bins were emptied. The pipes are old and the plumbing is not good so you have to pop your toilet roll in the bin if it was more than 3 pieces. I can see a lot of people have complained about this but if you are abroad the same thing happens. It is a beautiful old house and has many quirks but this is what makes this place special. The bed was one of the comfiest I have ever slept in! So nice that I’ve asked if Anneka if would be able to send me in the direction to buy the pillows etc, which she is more than happy to do. Yes there are dogs there and I only saw them as I asked as I love dogs they are beautiful and friendly little things. My friends on the other hand did not see the dogs once. I feel bad for Anneka as she is struggling on her own after her husband passed away it’s a huge project for one person to undertake. She is selling the property, but until that time she is the stuck there. There was a cleaner there when we stayed. The decor was all flowers and chintzy but It goes with the house. We would stay here again and would recommend it to everyone.

My wife and I booked a three-night stay at Tintern Old Rectory in August 2022. The website appeared to show a four-star rating from Visit Wales (still there at the time of writing). We were made aware that there was no breakfast available, but only after we had booked our stay and paid for the first night. By that time, we would not have been able to cancel without paying the full amount. The proprietor was very welcoming, but there was a strong smell of stale urine in the reception area that was off-putting. I presume this is down to the proprietor's dogs. As I took the cases upstairs, it was clear that the carpet badly needed vacuuming. Upon entering our room, I was taken aback at the decor which was yellowing and faded. The room had clearly not been decorated for many years. The proprietor then explained that the toilet in our room could take a maximum of three sheets of toilet paper per flush; any more than that would need to be put in the bin by the side of the toilet. I understand why this is necessary (narrow pipes, macerator etc.) and it might have been acceptable, but we then found that the poo bin had not been emptied and still contained waste from the previous guest. The proprietor had put some cereal packets in our room to make up for the lack of breakfast which was a nice gesture. However, she had also put unrefrigerated milk there too. Given the high temperatures we were experiencing, I would not have been prepared to use the milk the following morning as it would almost certainly have spoiled. My wife and I considered the situation for a short while and then decided we were not prepared to stay. We had not unpacked, so it was a simple matter to bring our cases back downstairs. To be fair to the proprietor, she asked why we were not staying so that she could learn from that and improve things. Unfortunately by then, I did not feel able to talk about wee, poo and hygiene in the open reception area, so I didn't give much feedback. We agreed with the proprietor that we would pay for two of the three nights booked and we departed about half an hour after we had arrived. Subsequently, we contacted Visit Wales who confirmed that the signage on the website was theirs, but they claim that Tintern Old Rectory is not registered with them. We have left the matter with Visit Wales to investigate and resolve.

A very relaxing, three day break in the Old Rectory. Stayed with our small dog, and had our own 'entrance' and an extremely comfortable room. Lovely warm welcome from our hostess and good selection of teas, coffees, biscuits, cereals and fresh fruit in our room. Love to return, and I'll never forget where I was when I heard of the Queen's death!
