Silke is a most welcoming and helpful hostess and the guest house is extremely clean and pleasantly quiet though near the busy main road. Handy for the train station too, which made it a great base for a car-less crew like us. I wouldn’t describe it as cheap but the price is not particularly excessive either. Presume the beer-stocked fridge was absent due to Covid restrictions (should have asked really!) Specifc highlights were feeding the beautiful horses, the highly stimulating and refreshing smoothies in the morning and the smoked salmon breakfast with home-made horse radish sauce.

Ballycanal guesthouse is perfect for family stays, spotlessly clean room, very modern rooms and also the dining room felt like a trendy cafe, with a view. It is situated not far from the motorway but I soon forgot about that. As well as the beautiful gardens, looking out at the horses in the morning was just beautiful. My daughter loved being able to feed them too. She was scared when with us but Silke soon had her relaxed. There is a beautiful canal walk; this for us was one of the main attractions. We wanted to be able to walk or for our daughter to cycle. It’s also a short walk into Moira where they have beautiful gardens. It’s a 10/15 minute drive to Oxford Island. Perfect location.
The breakfast was phenomenal, I usually go for a fry when I’m away but the Norwegian waffles had me intrigued. I ended up having them every morning. The wonderful Silke also made my husband a savoury alternative waffle with poached eggs and sausages.
I must say I don’t think the break would have been as perfect as it was if it hadn’t been for Silke, she went the extra mile and more. My daughter even asked if could get the train up some day to visit her. She was wonderful and a great asset to Ballycanal.
We will be back 100% even if it just for a night to indulge in Silke’s breakfast!
Only thing I’d change is maybe add to the breakfast menu a savoury waffle with egg and bacon or even just egg. Definitely the best and most relaxed break we’ve had in years and best in Ireland. I didn’t want to leave!!
Thank you to Silke, and we met Christine on our last day who was also lovely.

We rented the Manor House and another cottage for a hen party (group of 27) and the house and location are lovely. My only negative was that we lost money on our deposit for fake tan on towels (first time I’ve heard of this actually happening) which had we known in advance was a potential issues we would have brought our own towels but we we’re advised on check in. If you are thinking of booking for a large group of females who are likely to all be wearing some sort of tan I would tell everyone bring their own towels to avoid being charged afterwards.

We had a fantastic stay at Ballycanal Moira ahead of a wedding in Ireland a few days later. Christina kindly upgraded us to the Manor House which is perfectly appointed to suit the needs of a large group (16 of us in this case). The property itself is well appointed with all the amenities you might need and the nearby village of Moira has some great pubs and restaurants to check out. Christina was very accommodating and I would have no hesitation in staying there again. Thanks!

The best aspect of the guesthouse is the host. Silke is the most friendly and caring person I have met in a while, when staying in different hotels, lodges and guesthouses etc. Her breakfast was amazing! I would stay just for that.
For us the guesthouse was in a very good location as we came by car with ferry. We could go everywhere we wanted and most of the places was max 1-2h away. Belfast is ~ 30min, like nothing at all.
Our room was very specious. Our family of 4 didn’t feel too crowded at all, as the other double bed was almost in its own room, like an extension of the main room. Huge bathroom with shower and a bath. TV and a dvd player, that was handy as kids had bunch of dvd’s with them. They have a lovely playground outside the building and kids loved that. As well next to us was a little field with 2 horses that really got kids attention. There was loads of space around the house where kids could just drive with their scouters or run around. And it was safe, no traffic.
As only breakfast is provided, it was nice when if we ordered a takeaway, we could sit in the dining room and not worry about cleaning dishes afterwards.
Returning to the host, she knows all the best places where to go and visit, where to eat and in general all around the Northern Ireland what’s the best locations to see. We hd a great week in here. And the beds are so comfy that we slept like logs.

We fell on our feet with this booking! The Ballycanal cottages (they are, indeed, close to a canal) are a brilliant find.
Plenty of room, homely feel, all the pots and pans you could wish for and ample bathrooms. The cutlery drawer could do with topping up (it's inevitable that knives, forks and spoons go missing), but apart from that it's impossible to criticise.
Peaceful nights, birdsong during the day, and it's handy to stroll into the town (plentiful restaurants and bars and shops) and to the railway station - although, with well-spaced trains both north and south, you can't actually hear the trains.
The cottage was very clean, and staff came regularly to check if we had everything we needed during a delightful week's stay. Ample car parking.

Incredible accommodation. Arrived after a long journey to a roaring fire. Spacious but cosy. All utilities included. Easy airport and city centre access. Train station (but no noise incredibly!) and shops within walking distance. Christina is very kind, and always available for any queries during the trip. We spent Christmas as family in what was a real "home away from home".

Firstly, I would like to thank Silke for her super customer service. She, just as much as the guest house, is a gem. The room was spacious, superbly decorated and scrupulously clean. A fabulous full Irish topped off my stay - which was unfortunately just one night. Extra special thanks for the delicious smoothie!

Ballycanal guest house is conveniently located near to major roads but the view from my window was totally rural. Will stay again when I’m next in the region.

Thanks!

Breakfast skimpy and overcooked.
Room servicing not consistent.
For the money, shampoo and a biscuit is not too much to ask.
All surfaces are sticky- too much chemical cleaner I think.
Not value for money or very satisfactory.
I will not be back.
