Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

One of the best, if not the best, B&B we've ever slept. Spotless clean, warm and cosy. If you're looking for a quiet place to stay, that's the place! And the breakfast is delicious; I'm not an English brealfast fan, but the sausage-bacon-mushrooms-tomatoes I had here were the best ever! Moreover, Matt is a great guest and we really enjoyed chatting with him. and he gave us great suggestions for where to dine.
PS: a curiosity, the washbasin has a mixer that actually mixes hot and cold waters; another premier in our UK experience :)

Does it get any better than this? As you're driving down country lanes at night en route to your stay for the weekend, you can be hopeful - and sometimes worried - on your choice of B&B. Experience shows the results can be mixed. Will the hosts be friendly and welcoming? The rooms decent?

It took about half a nanosecond for any cares to melt away as Matt opened the door, exposing a roaring fire and a charming rustic dining room set for dinner. What can I say? The hosts incredible, the welcome sincere and warm, the rooms supremely comfortable. This is a place where you can relax. I don't mean that bothered relax where you still have stuff to do and getting back to work on Monday feels like a rest. I mean here you can really really relax.

Just to say that we do now have a couple of problems however. The first is with the shower. The shower was so good that now everything else seems like a dull trickle by comparison. The second problem is wth the bacon. What have I been eating all these years? I can no longer enjoy bacon without my mind drifting to the pinacle of those Chapelburn rashers!

Other points to note. First is, the wall is easy walking distance. The house is really well placed for exploration of sites of interest.

Second is, definitely go for the dinner option. Matt's cooking is sublime.

All in all very highly recommended! We'll be back for sure!

Charming chapelburn house comprises helpful host Matt and his friendly family, idyllic countryside surroundings and relaxing, comfortable rooms. We were very warmly welcomed on arrival and our every need catered for throughout our stay. The fresh homegrown produce, together with Matt's skill in the kitchen created a breakfast to die for! Our six year old daughter was totally enchanted by the family pigs and the beautiful garden provided the perfect place to enjoy a cold beer in the evening sun while chatting the night away with Matt. To sum up, a fantastic family getaway and we really did not want to leave!

It was an amazing experience to stay with Matt & Katie & family in their wonderful home. We enjoyed the privacy, the delicious home cooked meals using local and home grown/raised food, and the beautiful location. Matt's knowledge of the area and sharing interesting places to visit was fabulous and the hospitality outstanding. We just loved it there!

Without a shadow of a doubt, one of the very, very best B&B's I have ever had the pleasure of staying in. Matt is a perfect host - genial and considerate, as well as being a really terrific cook. Much of the produce is hand reared by him so the quality is second to none. The rooms are spotless with incredibly comfortable beds and the decor is a delightful blend of rustic and new. The bathroom in the south facing room is a delight with the best shower I have experienced! I genuinely can't find ANYTHING to fault with Matt his house, his food and his hospitality. A real gem that deserve all the plaudits is receives....

I stayed at Chapelburn for 3 nights with 2 other friends for a walking weekend. Chapelburn is probably the best b&b I have ever stayed in. The food is fantastic and Matt and his family are all so welcoming. Comfy beds, powerful showers and log fires, I could go on but would probably end up writing a novel. Overall just a brilliant weekend.

Had a one night stay here and loved it. We broke our journey back south from Scotland and booked here from a direct recommendation from a friend - good advice and good decision on our part. The South room was nicely furnished, comfortable bed and lovely warm bedding - grand en-suite. Would stay again. As others have advised take the dinner option - it was excellent food, cooked by Matt, with a good bottle of wine to accompany it. Weather was wet and a bit chilly, glad a took my jumper as needed it before the fire got going.
Matt was a charming and welcoming host.

Excellent, great room, fantastic dinner, friendly hosts, nice locale, and they have a golden retriever; what more could a couple of Aussies desire? Stayed two nights and it was very comfortable with the open fire. Highly recommended. Take the dinner option, you won't be disappointed.

We stayed here for two nights in early January, and we loved every moment of it. It's ideally located - near Hadrian's wall - for great walks, in a beautifully rugged and tranquil part of the world. Chapelburnn is a gorgeous house, which has been very tastefully decorated and was spotlessly clean. It was very clever how the B&B works as a self-contained unit within the house. We stayed in the South Room which has an amazing en suite bathroom, with brilliant views.

Matt is a superb host: there was always a lit fire waiting for us upon return, and he strikes the perfect balance of being friendly but giving space. We didn't have the pleasure of eating an evening meal (hopefully in the future!) there, Matt's the breakfast was sublime - the handreared bacon was the best I've eaten, hands down. As a Cumbrian, I have inevitably high standards when it comes to sausages, but Matt's version of the Cumberland were as good as they get!

Thanks for a great holiday, Emil and Amy

Chapelburn House is the perfect restorative following a tromp along Hadrian's Wall. Nothing was too much trouble and Matt created an ambience which was the perfect blend of professionalism and friendliness, helpful but never intrusive. It was a bonus having a sitting room and garden room in which to relax whilst waiting for the most amazing food. I didn't have the heart to tell him I did not eat beef but got stuck into the fillet steak and ate every scrap - it was the most tender piece of meat I have ever eaten! (I dare say that when our friend booked both available rooms, he was asked any dietary preferences and did not think it worth mentioning my beef aversion). The mattresses were incredibly comfortable as were the goose down pillows. Our bathroom was the larger of the 2 and you could have had a tea dance in there!! It is such a pity that our planned walk only allowed 1 night there - it was wonderful and restored my faith in B+Bs.
