We felt like royalty in this lovely, historic, elegant guest house! The sitting room with plush furniture, a full thoughtfully organized, annotated library, and expansive views of the wall path countryside is comfortable and inviting. The bedrooms are roomy and absolutely beautiful - with ironed sheets! Bathrooms most spacious and luxurious of any B&B we visited. Sitting outside on the veranda that evening drinking hot tea nibbling on our slices of chocolate cake that were waiting for us in our room, and enjoying the scenery both near on the guest house grounds and far out on the hilly horizon was peaceful, even meditative. Breakfast was delicious. Our host gracious and helpful, even helping me by calling a cab and calling ahead to the next B&B to ask that they allow me to check in early due to a medical issue that prevented me from continuing to hike with my family. Grateful and delighted. So happy we sojourned here!

Hill on the Wall was a fantastic traditional looking house with real history to it. Great views, could see the wall I’d walked from my window. Elaine (& Ellie) were very welcoming, lovely touch- tea/coffee, cake, chocolate treats await your arrival in your room! A well cooked & filling breakfast provided, just what you need before tackling yet more wall. The beds were very comfy and rooms spacious and really clean. Bathrooms very modern (maybe recently updated) well maintained, and again little touches that make you know they have the customers in mind.

It is such a peaceful and wonderful place. There are window seats for gazing at a landscape bisected by Hadrian's Wall or curled up with tea and a book. Our room overlooking the front step and garden had every amenity one could want. Plenty of choices of tea, biscuits and always slices of fresh cake daily. We stayed there during the Jubilee and, to our delight and amazement, Elaine asked her next door neighbours to take us into town to experience the Jubilee festivities. If she had not done that, we would have not walked in a parade led by musicians and an ethereal horse head float, not watched one of the beacon fires that were being set at 9:30pm that evening around the UK. It was such a thrill to see two other beacon fires along Hadrian's Wall followed by a fireworks display. She made this magical evening happen for us and we will always be grateful. First rate experience.

Back at The Hill on The Wall and it continues to impress and delight even after countless stays over the past 20 years. The house still has its country house charm with bedrooms and bathrooms that usually grace 5 star country hotels. Not surprising this is how its been rated by tourist organisations I was surprised to see the 3 star rating complaining that Elaine now calls her guests into the house, rather than meeting them at the front door. I sincerely hope that when 'ellarvey' gets to her mid 70s, and suffers chronic back pain, people are more sympathetic to her plight. For me Elaine will always be the ultimate hostess. Kind, thoughtful and dedicated to delivering the extras that give me, and all her guests, an exceptional first class service. I had my usual wonderful stay, enjoying once more the feather beds and the best breakfasts ever served. None of it is "what you'd expect in a BnB", just read the reviews. Some people however, are never satisfied!!

Having stayed four years ago and knowing that the rooms and service would be excellent I stayed for 2 days while walking The Hadrian's Wall path for Macmillan. A lot of money has been spent in upgrading the bathrooms. A beautiful house and location overlooking the Willowford Valley and a section of Hadrian's Wall. Rooms are first class and very comfortable, clean with excellent facilities. Elaine as usual the perfect host with a slice of cake to welcome you left in your room. Breakfast is at 8.30, It is first class with a great selection of options. Will continue to recommend to others. Simply the best. A great stay

Stayed overnight here whilst walking the nearby Hadrian’s Wall. Beautiful old building with stunning views . We had a lovely, spacious room which was immaculately clean . Extensive choice of teas and coffees in the room and thoughtfully, there was cake awaiting our arrival . No food available in the evening , but a member of staff helpfully gave us a lift into and back from the village where there was a pub which provided good food . Excellent breakfast in the morning. Would definitely return there .

By far the nicest place we stayed along our Hadrian's Wall walk. It really is very special and definitely a place to return to. I didn't even want to leave the room to be honest. Dressing gown, slippers, cake, chocolate biscuits, the most enormous selection of teas, amazing breakfast, bedroom and bathroom. It's really the generosity that makes this a standout, and other more grudging bnb owners would do well to take note - here you are never going to run out of milk, toilet roll and the like! It's all the little thoughtful extra touches that are so appreciated. The house itself is beautiful. We found out afterwards that when walking west to east, you will see the house high up to your left as you walk, and in fact there is a path up to the house through the fields which would cut out the long tiring slog through the village. It is worth checking this out beforehand. I would give it 10 stars if I could.

We stayed here overnight as part of a walking holiday and what a brilliant place to relax and unwind. The building and its gardens are beautiful with complete thought given to everything. The decor was completely in keeping with the property but the ensuite was cutting edge and the power shower was very welcome! The bedding was perfect, and what can I say about breakfast! All top quality produce cooked to perfection served in a beautiful dining room covered in interesting items to keep you entertained whilst eating. Our host was discreet but always there when required and very helpful ensuring we got a booking at a local restaurant as the location was quite remote. My partner and I didn't want to leave. I also want to mention the views...they are great. Highly recommended!!

A beautiful house with wonderful views across the valley. We had Caligula’s room with many original features, a new bathroom and all facilities. Our breakfast the next day was excellent and served by the very friendly Ellie who was smiley and helpful. However, we did arrive at this B&B at 3.40 and were told we were far too early and we couldn’t come in as check in was 4.30. Could we sit outside? This was no problem on a sunny afternoon but we felt chastised and rather unwelcome at this greeting by the owner. Shame! This is why we have only given this a 4 star. Everything else else was great.
