Detailed Reviews
It’s almost three weeks since we returned from the Great House and yet it’s balm stays with us. My husband and I travel frequently and love all that Antigua offers but this was very special. Apart from anything else, it was the first time that my husband has ever returned from a holiday and started to look for flights back!
The house, though a bit tricky to find (look for number 9 on the free maps ) is elegant, well cared for and astonishing in its collections of furniture, paintings, photos and historical artefacts. This might seem a bit overwhelming in our minimalist world but it seems right for a house built in the 1670’s and of historic importance to the island.
In fact, we originally asked for one of their newly built garden cottages which we could have occupied
but were still being finished. It didn’t matter at all.
We loved staying in the Royal Suite with its grand shutters and four poster bed.
As well as the house, it was the staff and their attitude which was so very impressive. Mara, the housekeeper made us feel special and helped with everything, the chef produced fantastic food- fresh and delicious every day, and Celia came each day to give us yoga lessons which were perfect.
As a keen swimmer, I loved the large and well run pool set in the middle of 27 acres of beautiful gardens.
We were the only guests during our days there. I suspect this will not be the case for very long in this
wonderful establishment!
Our sincere thanks to Gabriella, the owner, for the immense attention to detail. We loved it!

Not your typical Caribbean beach hotel with white beaches, lots of people and everything very 'samey', don't stay here if that is what you want.
The Great House is charming and unique.
That being said the garden cottages were modern, very large (one of the biggest rooms we have stayed in and the bathrooms were even bigger than anything I have seen in a hotel!) and well equipped. Fridge was well stocked with coke, sprite and water and beds were soft and very big (didnt realised my partner was in bed with me on the first night!).
The staff were brilliant, Cosier makes the best margarita I have ever had, Mara was on hand to book trips and taxis for us and Sharon made swan towels in our room.
Love everything the hotel offered, and we took full advantage of it. Reading some of the other reviews I think people are missing the charm of a small family run hotel.
I think the hotel holds a maximum of 20 people, there were some other guests when we were staying but the beauty was all the space that you never felt crowded or had to 'save' a space.
Really enjoyed the dishes, spoke to the chef and he changed things up for us as he went. We asked for more spice and local fish which he was more than happy to accommodate.
We are coming back to this charming place, wish we had never left. Thanks team

We had a lovely stay at the Great House Antigua, such a beautiful landscape.
You feel immersed into this unique place as soon as you enter the driveway, which is full of plant life. We chose to stay in one of the cottages.
The cottage was very nice. I particularly liked the large, comfortable beds, and couples showers in the large bathroom. The aircon units were a nice plus. Each cottage even had it's own hammock!
The service was very high quality. Our beds were made up each day, and there was a full clean of our room each day.
The head housekeeper, Mara, was superb. We felt very welcome on our arrival and throughout the stay. Any questions or requests that we had were met quickly, and her service was of a high level.
We had our meals included with our stay. Chef Wakefield cooked up a storm each day, even offering us to choose off-menu dishes in advance. We didn't really need to in the end as the menu was nice and varied, with good complimentary wine options to match. We ordered lobster for our final night which was amazing. The outdoor dining area has a great view and is one of the nicest dining settings I have experienced.
Some of the more unique parts that we came across and used included a yoga platform (next to the sugar mill) with an excellent ocean view. That was a great place to do all sorts of activities such as workouts and obviously yoga. We actually had a yoga instructor come in and take a class for us on the platform which was great.
We spent a lot of time by the pool, which was always clean and refreshing to use. We took a short walk down to beach area, where we used the kayak to explore the cove and surrounding area, where the water was very calm.
We wanted to explore the island but didn't really know much about it. Mara was great with her suggestions and booked everything for us, such as Stingay city, a spa day and a couple mornings diving the reefs.
Overall this was a great stay. I've already recommended this to several of my friends/colleagues and will likely return in the next few years.
Thanks again to Mara, Moses & Chef Wakefield and the rest of the team for their great hospitality during our stay!

+1
My wife and I loved every minute of our stay at this beautiful boutique hotel. We stayed here for 3 nights. It's located away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas on Antigua, but that was exactly what we were looking for. We got to stay in one of their brand new cottages. The room was HUGE! From the minute we arrived, Mara (the main housekeeper) took care of our every need. She is the sweetest! The meals we ate there were amazing, their pool is huge, and we loved spending our time walking around the grounds and hearing all of the birds chirping. We seriously can't recommend this hotel enough. Do yourself a favor and stay here! You won't regret it!!!

We had the most fabulous day at the great house. The food itself was a little dated, but the staff were friendly and helpful and paired with delicious cocktails and fine wines in such a historic setting, it could not have been a better day. To have a long slow Sunday lunch on the terrace of a unique historical plantation house was such a pleasure. And as guests we were kindly allowed to enjoy the remainder of the day by the beautiful pool. If you go for lunch, do bring your swimmers! Huge thanks to all the staff at the great house for their hospitality. A memorable day.

What a brilliant hotel to stay in, felt like a national trust property with lots of interesting stories and objects throughout the main house.
Originally I booked to stay in the main house but was offered an upgrade on arrival to the cottages and wow!
The main house suites looked amazing, very historic, bathrooms and AC, etc. but the size and comfort of the cottages is incomparable.
Really enjoyed the little perks offered at Great House, like fitness classes, hikes, rose petals on the beds.
I had a lovely spa treatment on the verenda and a there is a very little waterfront area for kayaking (saw a sting ray though I wouldn't swim in the water).
Chef Wakefield was great with my food requirements while staying, others mentioned the menu was limited but after I spoke to him he was brilliant at discussing the dishes with me and fitting them to what I needed and wanted. Can't wait to go back!

Just arrived back in the UK after our stay at The Great House.
This was our third time in Antigua, and second time staying at the great house.
Overall another great experience - as others have said the staff are great, the cottages were fantastic and the privacy & peace was exactly what we needed.
We joined the yoga classes with Celia and went on an early morning hike with Danny. The views of the ocean for both were great.
Enjoyed the cuisine, it could be more exciting but it was still up there with the cuisines on offer at restaurants elsewhere on the island. The chef was happy to diverge from the menu when requested on the day, and we had fresh lobster on our last night which was so good.
We will probably end up coming back for round 3!

We stayed in a Garden Cottage at The Great House for a week in November, and we have never experienced such a wonderful holiday. It was so difficult to leave!
From the moment you arrive you will completely switch off. We honestly felt as though we had been taken away from the hustle and bustle of normal life and placed in complete and utter tranquility and paradise. The accommodation is so special, different and unique. A real home from home. You are treated like family, something you just don’t get in large hotel chains.
If you are looking for peace and relaxation in beautiful surroundings, The Great House is for you.
We hired a car and soon realised that it is also located in one of the best areas (in our opinion) with Long Bay (the most beautiful beach ever with crystal blue sparkling water) within a 10 minute drive.
If I had to sum up our experience in one word it would have to be ‘Shangri-La’ - a faraway haven of idyllic beauty and tranquility.
Thank you to everyone at the Great House for making this a once in a lifetime holiday…

We visited the Great House in November 2023. This is a place that gets under your skin. In the best of ways.
We booked a suite but were offered a free upgrade to one of the cottages that was well worth it. Stunning room with lovely views, a huge bathroom and porch overlooking the bay. Our cottage was beautifully appointed with lovely period furniture. We did miss a TV in the room it has to be said and the internet speed is not sufficient for streaming, but if you want to really switch off this hotel ticks all the boxes.
The staff were fantastic and added greatly to making our stay such a personal experience. Thank you Mara and your team - we will be back!
