Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I spent a fantastic week at the escape hotel and spa in St James Barbados and it has made my wife and I fall in love with the island. The staff and the standard of accommodation is outstanding. The owners are the most helpful people i have come across in all my time of travelling the world. Simply an outstanding resort on the perfect island. It is ideal for couples and family alike and has a beach that allows you to sunbathe and swim without any of the usual hassle. We will be back again soon.

Having previously been to this hotel in 2008 we wanted to go back in Feb 2010 but were told by Virgin that the hotel refurbishment would not be completed before May 2010. We subsequently stayed at the Sea Breeze which is a little further south towards Bridgetown. During our holiday we took a power boat trip up the coast and the boat owner slowed down and pointed out The Waves hotel and the ongoing refurbishment works to me. It looked a complete building site with windows out and in a very sorry state. We would advise people to make sure this hotel is completely finished and up and running before making a booking. Our first visit to this hotel (Escape and Spa, as it was then called) was excellent and although the hotel was beginning to look a bit tired at the edges we had a fantastic holiday. If they can get this hotel back to the same, or better, standard as before then we will be pleased to return in the future without hesitation.

Was due here on the 4th march, got told 3 days before still not open and only given Almond Beach as a "like for like" Went passed here on our journey to the ABV and it was still a building site probably at least another month at the rate they are going, although our rep stated it was going to be opened 10th march..... no chance so far!!! Come on Virgin get a grip and let people know with more notice please!!!

We booked this hotel in 2009. Were informed late December that renovation not complete and we were offered Turtle Beach as the only alternative. We drove past in Feb 2010. Spa side of road still a demolition site. Hotel side windows being fitted. Appears to be a long time before fit for habitation. Am amazed Virgin has not indicated this on their web site. It states renovated 2009!

This hotel was supposed to be a virgin exclusive hotel at 4 stars. I have never seen a hotel run like it! My husband and I spent part of our honeymoon here, and the food wasn't great at all, and faults reported for our room were not sorted throughout our stay. Missing tiles in the bathroom, freezing cold shower, not appreciated as the hot water didn't work at all. Nothing much to do at this hotel to keep you occupied. Leaking roof, held together by gaffer tape! Shockingly dirty. We are both easily pleased people, so the fact we thought it was this bad means it's bad. Virgin compensated us after many many complaints, but wasn't really enough for a ruined honeymoon to be fair.

We stayed at this hotel in 2008 for our wedding. We upgraded our room and it was lovely and had a stunning view. My inlaws didn't upgrade and I have to say I didn't like their room at all very dark and dingy. Food and service were fine. We got married there and the wedding was perfect. Everything was done in barbados time meaning things were always late but everything came together and we had a perfect day. They organised the flowers, photographer, video man, steel band and our meal it couldnt have been better. The rep was very nice and was always about to help.

We travelled to the Escape Hotel and Spa in February to celebrate my partners 50th birthday and to watch the England v W Indies test match. True, prior to refurbishment the hotel was tired in it's appearance but this was more than compensated for by the friendly staff and the service they offered. We had the best 2 weeks holiday ever. As far as we could ascertain, if the staff were treated with the courtesy they deserve then you were treated likewise. If the staff were treated in the boorish manner that some English people reserve for their holidays then they were also treated likewise. Simple! Would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a laid back holiday and hope to return there in the future.

I stayed 2 years ago, all the staff was so friendly, always smiling. Kenny the barman had been there for 15 years, he even had my drink ready before I got too the bar I presume he seen me coming. the food was fresh and tasty, we stayed in the garden villa's it was incredible the views the little path down to the beach, although not huge it surficed, you only had too turn left out of the hotel walk 500yds, there was a virtually empty beach apart form a 3-4 locals. I will go back, hopefully it was how I remeber it, as I cannot believe it has deteriated to this extent.
