We primarily booked this hotel because of the large pool which Melia Habana uses heavily to promote itself. However, after we had completed all check-in procedures, we were told that the pool was not working. We told the lady at the reception that we would have appreciate if they could have told us BEFORE the completion of our check-in so that we could decide whether it would be a dealbreaker or not, but the lady did not seem to care about our concerns. She also did not want to compensate us in any way (e.g., room upgrade, discounts, vouchers, late check-out etc.) for the lack of a fully functioning pool. Not a great start. After discussing with the lady at the reception about the lack of a fully functioning pool, we were escorted to our room on the second floor. The room had a nice view, but you could clearly tell that the room (and hotel in general) was quite old as most of the furniture and wooden finishes were quite worn out. Further, the airconditioning was not working properly, as the temperature could not be kept constant. Instead, our room was either freezing cold (if the airconditioning was turned on), or extremely warm (if the airconditioning was switched off). There was no middle ground. We also never managed to find out how to turn on and off the lights on the balcony, as the lights seemed to have a mind of their own. On the morning of day 2, we all started to notice an incredibly strong smell of acetone/nail polish remover coming from our bathroom. We told the reception about the smell, and the lady from the reception sent someone from the cleaning staff to clean our bathroom. We told the lady that cleaning the bathroom would be pointless, as the smell nothing to do with cleanliness. However, the lady at the reception did not listen and insisted that the bathroom just needed to be cleaned. As the cleaning took place, one of the framed pictures above one of the three beds suddenly fell down. Luckily, no one was sitting in the bed at that time, but since the picture was extremely heavy, it could have ended very miserably. We told the lady at the reception about the picture, and she sent someone to put it back up on the wall. The picture was put back up on the wall, but it was not reinforced, so it was still wobbly and we were uncomfortable sleeping with such a heavy picture above our heads. We told the lady at the reception about our concerns about the picture, but she insisted that we had nothing to worry about - which was quite a quite absurd statement as the picture had fallen down just moments ago... Needless to say, we chose to take the picture down ourselves. Anyway, the bathroom was cleaned, and - as expected - the smell persisted. We told the lady at the reception, who went to our room to identify the issue. When she got to our room and smelled the bathroom, she told us that the smell was likely caused by the toxic fumes (yes, that's what she said) from the paint that was used to paint the walls downstairs. She offered us a new room, but it took them a couple of hours to relocate us, and they did not offer to help us with our luggage etc. Also, we did not get anything resembling an apology or compensation for being put in a room with toxic paint fumes for half a day. Completely unacceptable. In terms of our overall impression of the hotel, the food is very bland, and most of the staff look miserable and joyless (the security guards - or whatever they are - that are spread across the hotel are almost scary looking). Half the elevators do not work properly, as they cannot go all the way to the lowest floor (basement). The hotel is generally quite worn out and definitely not a 5-star hotel by western standards (would likely be a 3 star hotel). My family is fully aware that things do not always go as planned (smelly bathroom, pool not working, picture falling down), but what's most concerning about our stay is the way the problems were handled by the staff. Completely unacceptable and absolutely cannot recommend Melia Habana.…
