Spent the weekend at Dolgoch & Tyncornel hostels near Tregaron in West Wales. Amazing places away from reach of emails or Internet ! Quite basic accommodation but you meet some interesting like minded people. Harks back to the original hostelling ethos.

I camped at the hostel hoping to 'get away from it all' for a couple of nights and boy did I ever!! It was an amazing experience - views outstanding!! The directions were clear on how to get there so due to my 'no service' I was able to arrive safely and find my way home!! The hostel had everything...

What a truly wonderful place. I have to admit this was a first for me, most weeks I am in 5 star hotels in various locations so I entered this trip with a certain level of trepidation. I was with some friends who are trustees and stay both here and at the sister bunkhouse quite often. I am undertaking a...

This place is a stunning little bunkhouse in possibly one of the most remote valleys in Wales. We stayed on the last weekend in Jan and arriving late from London were very grateful for Simon (the off site warden) who had left a fire burning in the main room for us. This place is pretty basic, especially in winter -...

I confess we booked this hostel by mistake thinking it was the Dolgoch near Dolgellau(it is not!). Two hours of hairy, roller coaster driving later we arrived to a near dark hostel with some trepidation. This was dispelled when we walked into the kitchen/living room and were met by Bob who explained that there was no mains electricity and lent...

I found Dolgoch Hostel at the recommendation of a Welsh friend I met during my travels. I was sure I was never going to get there - I drove for probably an hour and a half in the dark and rain as my sat nav took me seemingly into the middle of nowhere. Once I arrived, I thought the place...

Last visit was the summer of 76, so pleased to see this unique hostel was still open. OK so no upstairs lighting, you do get a torch! Have to boil water for drinking as it comes off the mountain. No fridge. Stepping back to a simpler time, enjoying the basics, great company, enthusiastic volunteers and the scenery to die for....

A friend & I visited for a weekend recently, our second time at the hostel, and had a wonderful time. Colin, our warden, could not have been more helpful & welcoming, creating a really friendly atmosphere. Among the other guests were some fascinating people as ever. It was the perfect base for us to swim in the beautiful River Irfon...

The hostel is fairly remote, on the border between Powys and Ceredigion. It is extremely basic but that makes it so special and enjoyable. Without the lovely volunteers who run the hostel and give some of their time as wardens, the place couldn't be accessible. What is great is that these people simply love Dolgoch. They'll be eager to share...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Elenydd is an area in the southern Cambrian Mountains of mid-Wales, between Llanwrtyd Wells and Tregaron. It is a wild and beautiful place, with silence broken only by a gurgling stream, the bleating of sheep or the call of a bird. It is a wonderful area for outdoor activities like walking and cycling, an ideal place to escape from the pressures of the modern world.Simple youth hostels have provided accommodation here for many years and have always been popular with walkers and cyclists. They are in isolated and stunning locations and have been run by volunteer wardens for many years. The Youth Hostels Association closed the last three of these hostels in 2006, but we have managed to save two of them - Ty'n Cornel and Dolgoch. They are both converted farmhouses in the hills and are full of character. And you can help to keep them open by visiting them! ... more   less
