Our expectations were high, I have to admit this. We had heard of San Maurizio from so many people and had been wanting to stay there for a long time. But in the most objective way, this has been a very disappointing experience.
The location in Langhe is beautiful and the premises, being an old monastery, very pretty. Staff was friendly and the spa very nice. But that’s were the positives end. For a five star hotel with a room price of almost EUR 1000, the hotel does not live up to expectations.
1) The communal areas in the hotel are dated and loveless. It lacks charme, care and style
2) The standard room is spacious but again very dated. Breakfast was good but not outstanding and not adequate for a 5 star hotel. There was only a complimentary bottle of water in the room, but wouldn’t it be appropriate to offer a basket of fruits or cookies and perhaps a bottle of the house wine? The price per night is absolutely not justified.
3) Staff was friendly but there was a distinct feeling of lack of care in the hotel, missing the presence of a manager.
4) Our meals both in the Truffle Bistrot and the 1 star Michelin restaurant “Guido do Castiglione” were average. Considering the location being a destination for food and wine lovers, the quality of the food was surprisingly mediocre.
Overall a disappointing experience. Not to be repeated.

We enjoyed a 3 night break in this 5 * hotel recently which is steeped in history, our expectations were high. We stayed in a spacious Luigi Suite in the new building adjacent to the main hotel, bedroom, 2 bathrooms, sitting room, two terraces, one with a jacuzzi. Very modern, plenty of wardrobe and drawer space which is great if you are doing a longer trip and have luggage. The room was cleaned well daily, the only irritation being as usual for Italy, no iron or ironing board allowed in the room. To add insult to injury, they then charge EUR 7 per item to be ironed which, when you are paying over EUR 700 per night for a room is a little unreasonable, the hotel could include maybe a maximum of 2 items per day to be ironed as part of the room price? The bar area is nice but we were a little disappointed the barman that served us one evening who lacked any inventive skills for helping to suggest a pre-cocktail drink, he could only make a drink if you told him the name, I guess so he could look up the ingredients. He really was not very friendly or helpful. Also, at least two cocktails on the menu, not available? The spa is nice, a good swimming pool to compliment the cave and a good selection of spa treatments available with helpful employees. The Michelin star restaurant is lovely, we had a wonderful truffle menu dinner, service was excellent in this restaurant and the team very knowledgeable, the highlight of the stay really. The Truffle Bistrot however was underwhelming, we ate there one evening and were very disappointed that both our dishes, fish courses, were over cooked and under seasoned, the food lacked any love, despite leaving a majority of food on the plate, the waiter did not ask if everything was okay? Breakfast was also underwhelming for a 5*, with no made to order menu options, the chef busy playing with his IPhone, just a small buffet with pre-prepared food and inattentive staff, we chose to only have breakfast once. A real shame as such a beautiful dining room. The Bistrot lets the hotel down and is the main cause of pulling our overall rating down. Maybe the main team / Chef are away? On departure nobody seemed to care how our visit was as they did not ask at all? Overall, disappointing, I would like to think we were unlucky, the hotel promises so much and has so much potential.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your feedback, we greatly value our guests’ feedback as we constantly strive to improve ourselves and our service. We are really glad to know that you enjoyed our San Luigi suite, it is always a pleasure when our guests are satisfied by the combination between our historical patrimony and the comfort of our technology. The attentive restoration of our suites has been undertaken in respect of the heritage of the past, trying to put together original details and refined technology and the philosophy of good living. We also very pleased to read you had an enjoyable experience at our award-winning spa, as well as in our Michelin starred restaurant. We are surprised nobody asked to you about the impression about your stay, we have carefully analyzed your comment. Regarding the choice of cocktails, we passed the comment on to our Bartender and there must have been a linguistic misunderstanding. Our cocktail menu has indeed various San Maurizio creations and our Bartender asked to provide a name of an international cocktail simply in order to better understand your preferences and prepare the right cocktail. Our bar crew is always happy to come up with new customized creations according to our guests’ taste. We are quite concerned about your report on the Truffle Bistrot, for this reason we will discuss the issue with our passionate Chef and our direction, furthermore we are applying some important changes in the breakfast service. We apologize if the Bistrot did not meet up to your expectations, we will do our best to improve the dining experience. If you have any other suggestion to improve our service, feel free to write me and I will be happy to further discuss it with you. Warm regards, Chiara Pavese Guest Relations c.pavese@relaissanmaurizio.it

We stayed in one of the larger rooms with our two kids 4.5 and 1.5. Our daughter slept in the second bedroom and our younger son was able to sleep in the second bathroom with the door open for ventilation. It was more than enough room and very comfortable. The back patio was quiet and very nice with a spacious jacuzzi. We enjoyed the pool area as well. The pool is quite nice and perfect temperature, especially as we find a lot of pools in Europe too cold. There were some pretty minor things they could have done to make the area around the pool nicer like pulling out weeds and mowing the lawn in the grassy area with chairs. Didn’t affect us but stuff you would expect from a hotel of that quality. We saw the regular rooms and they are quite small but very affordable considering you get access to the beautiful property. Breakfast was ok, but paled in comparison to the hotel we had just visited in Greece. They would make you eggs although we were surprised the servers were not a bit better with their English and a bit may have been lost in translation.

Honestly our only big complaint about the hotel was the bugs. Mosquitoes were fairly omnipresent unfortunately. Regardless this was a great base for piedmont.

The most frustrating part was that they insisted we pay a "nominal fee" to use the sofa bed in the room that we were already paying for. The nominal fee was over $100 which in our opinion isn't nominal and when we pushed back they reduced it to 60 euro per night which is still high for a room that said sofa bed but we really wanted to stay there so we paid.

This place is a piece of paradise! The location is stunning, the staff very nice, the quality of the food and the wine exceptional and the on top of it all there is a nice spa! It shows that this is not part of a chain, but rather the hobby of an enthusiast from the Langhe region

We can’t wait to be back again soon!

Relais San Maurizio is a unique, unforgettable place. Refined and romantic, it is the ideal place for a true time of wellness, relaxation, soothing the senses and the spirit. An unexpected, happy discovery. The More frescoed halls, the 31 rooms with unique decorations, the gardens and the park with centuries-old trees are all truly enchanting. The large outdoor swimming pool at the top of the hill provides a 360° view of the surrounding landscape. The hotel is also home to the Michelin starred 'di Guido da Costigliole' restaurant and the exclusive 'La Via del Sale' Medical & Beauty SPA. It is a partner of the Relais & Chateaux chain. Less
