My sister and I booked this hotel to stay from 16th Feb to 2nd March 14 nights in total of which we stayed 3 nights. Our room was big and filthy. We had to clean down shelves before we could unpack and having travelled from Ireland we were tired and needed a shower but no hot water! The bed sheets were old and worn and grey when they should have been white and the pillows were disgusting. When we awoke the next morning the sun shon through the torn curtains which had been patched with iron on tape!!
We booked this hotel because of its proximity to the city, the photos and it was quite expensive so we thought it had to be good.
I could go on but my advice would be don’t stay there!!!!

This guest booked via Expedia (non refundable booking). A few days before arrival, the guest relative (nephew) called to ask for a refund as he wanted to cancel the booking. The reason being that the 2 guests were his aunts who was paying his mother a surprise visit. She lived in Cascade. We explained that the hotel had a non refundable policy for the carnival period. The two ladies as far as I am aware, never had any contact with the reception or with the cleaning staff. The room was CLEANED prior to arrival and the hotel purchased NEW LINEN IN JANUARY 2023 PARTICULARLY FOR THE CARNIVAL SEASON! If they had any problems, they should have addressed their concerns to the reception and to the housekeeper assigned to their room. It is my belief that their problem stems not from the hotel but from their personal preference to stay at family for their visit.

I stayed and was the one who booked the room where the front desk clerk took $100 US and wrote a receipt that I didn't sign for $20 US deposit. We were expecting a deposit, but not $100 US. I, myself, didn't have $100 US in cash, but my traveling had some cash so we split the deposit. When leaving for our plane the morning of our departure, they showed me the receipt and I argued that wasn't correct. The staff on hand said they had security cameras and could check the tapes. I have not heard back from them. I hope they can prove with video that we only paid $20 US, and not $100 US for the deposit. Lest I am not confused about the difference between USD and TTD.

We asked the receptionist about Mr Reid's deposit ; we checked back the cameras; and we double checked the audit for monies received in US cash. We can now verify the following: 1. all USD received has been matched with the payee 2. the cameras showed that Mr Reid paid in $20 usd. He did not take the receipt because he was in a hurry and could not wait for the receptionist to finish writing up the receipt. He said he would collect same later. He did not collect same and it remained in the receipt book. 3. Money handed in at the audit verified that $20 was received 4. We do not have ready USD on hand to provide USD change so the receptionist would not have USD on her person to give back any change if she even received same. 5. We checked over and over again and can verify that only $20usd was received from Mr Reid. Both him and his wife may have been mistaken as to the amount they paid in. Its curious that if one pays in a deposit, one would want to collect a receipt to ensure that you will have proof of payment for refund of same. We cannot tell why he never collected the receipt from reception and waited until check out date to query the payment which is very distressing to all concerned and causes loss of precious time in carrying out investigation after investigation.

Dear Royal Palm Suite Hotel Management Team,

I am writing this review in response to the review done by Jay D and to your response to his same review. I concur with everything that was mentioned in the review done by Jay D. I am disappointed at your team's response; here are the several reasons why:

Upon check-in, we were surprised and shocked at the standard of tidiness and cleanliness of the room. We decided not to bring this matter up, since we were too shocked and surprised, and therefore decided to accept that the management deems the room ready and good for check-in at this filthy and untidy condition. There was no point to get staff to clean the room all over again, since it was the evening and all the housekeeping staff were gone for the day.

We also spoke to no one because there was no absolutely no point for this, considering how laughable the whole situation was. We had everything under control from our end; there was no need for any assistance.

We did not make any complaints because the standards of cleanliness are just laughable and we accepted this ridiculousness. If for all of these examples – stains on the bedlinen and upholstery, rusty shower curtain rail, dust under the beds and all furniture, dust and dirt behind curtains on window sills, water stains on all crockery and utensils, limescale residue and stains in the kettle, broken ironing board, stained and dirty iron, stains on towels, curtains with missing hooks, etc – were present upon check-in and this was deemed ready for stay, surely arriving to all of this in the evening would make it futile for us to request for rectification.

Of course the problem was the cost of the room! I mean really?
Iron broken by another guest; so it's ok to give it to us to use? I mean really?
Yes all pictures on the website were actual, but has anyone paid attention to come closer? I mean really?

Would you be totally happy to stay in the room you let us check into?
You let us check into a room that looked like that. I mean really?

There will be no apology.

I will not waste any further time on persons who have nothing better to do than be spiteful and malicious. Your time will come too when someone complains about your business. The reviews reflect both you and your friend's characters and you have made fools of yourselves. The excuses are stupid and ignorant. It is obvious that you came with the intention to find fault with everything. Perhaps you should have paid $700 usd per night in another hotel to suit your 'STANDARDS". Your reply makes no sense at all IT IS FOLLY TO BE WISE

Imagine a typical US Fleabag hotel.. then drop it down a notch or two.

This hovel (not a misspelling) is in the middle of a slum area, doors open to the outdoors, pool is in disrepair, rooms are dirty, smelly and poor quality. I wouldn't let my worst enemy stay here. I walked out of the property after one look at the room.

The pictures are not an accurate depiction of the property. I was shocked when I looked at the pictures on Expedia as it is simply not representative of this hotel.

Unfortunately this review is extremely incorrect. The photos of the hotel on its website is totally accurate and was taken recently (2011). The rooms are clean and spacious. The pool has been re-done and a jaccuzi has been put in. The rooms have been tastefully refurbished. The hotel is located in a very safe and decent part of Port of Spain (Maraval) with an excellent location (next door to a large supermarket) and walking distance to 3 shopping malls and banks. There are onsite shopping boutiques; doctors' offices; conference facilities; pharmacy. In fact the place is bustling with energy. Sometimes a person may arrive with full knowledge that there is a NO refund POLICY for the carnival period. When they arrive in Trinidad, at times, they meet a friend/ family who may offer them free accommodation. With this offer, in an effort to get out of the contract with the hotel, some persons fabricate all kinds of reasons/ faults to avoid the accommodation contract and behave in a deplorable manner. We know every one of the complainants on this website. At the hotel, we are in the business to provide hospitality. it is unfortunate that persons would make the effort to be very spiteful. The guest(s) who have stayed and who were satisfied with the service and accommodation, may not take the time to write a review, but the satisfied guests by far outnumber the few disgruntled customers who have posted bad reviews on this website. With this in mind, I would like to invite all such disgruntled guest to contact the hotel via its email address: admin@royalpalm.co.tt so we can further discuss any matters that may be troubling them as we are open to suggestions for improvement. "make a friend today, instead of an enemy"

Looking at the brochers before i went looked a great hotel to stay, family accomadation apparently!!!!!!
Got to the main reception and they did not have a clue what they were doing, the rooms were sooo bad you couldnt sleep their, very dirty but the bugs and insects in the room were very freindly. There were alot of locals wondering aimlessly in the halls which made you feel very uncomfortable. The swimming pool was constanly closed, which was probably a good thing by looking at the state of it. The area was terrible, it was a dump with nothing to do. Think very carfuly if you are thinking of going to this retched place, i advise you not to set foot within 10 miles of the place

If you should look at the brochures it looks very accommodating. But to my family surprise no one had a clue who I was even though I called a day ahead to confirm my reservation. Upon arrival at "hotel" and i use that word loosely you will have better success with dealing with people in the streets because the staff does not know how to accommodate their guests. Upon entry in the room you first think you must be on a game show beacuse no one would dare offer a water logged bug infested room to someone. but you realize it's true, room service ideal of correcting problems are that you go to the store and purchase bug spray and scouring cleanser to clean your own room everyday. Also should you have a desire to use the pool make sure you had your tetanus shots first the swimming pool looks like it should be condemned. As for as meals if you don't mind leftovers from the soccor teams they cater to than bon-appetite because that's all you will have for meals. But all was not a total lost the most enjoyable moment is checking out!!! I hope no one takes me as being bitter but when you pay for services and you are not given a simple courtesy it plays with the human mind a bit as it did mines. Also my stay was from 12/12/04 to 12/19/04 nevr again.

I wish I’d known about this website and seen the reviews above before booking.

Made a reservation here for a 10 day visit for Trinidad Carnival 2005. What a mistake!!

Payment in full was processed immediately, without authorization. A receipt was received three weeks later - the evening before we left for Trinidad.

Within 15mins of checking in, we had checked out.

Hotel - old. Room - dirty and dusty. Furniture - old, broken and mismatched. ACU - covered in cobwebs. Bathroom - 'decorated' with lime scaled broken tiles, broken shower fixtures and a mouldy shower curtain. Needless to say, the bedding did not fill you with much confidence. Customer service - non-existent.

Took our complaint to the hotel manager the next day. She gave us an earful of verbal abuse and personal insults; then threatened us with more of the same when we objected to her tone. This continued every day - for the next 8 days - while we attempted to arrange a refund. We were offered 2 alternative rooms - of exactly the same disgusting standard.

The state of the hotel and the treatment we received by the hotel manager was so disgraceful that we were urged to lodge an official complaint with the local police, Consumer Affairs and Tourism Departments.

We were informed by the above agencies that the actions of the hotel were illegal, according to Trinidad law. We managed to get a 50% refund. This was only after 3 months of lengthy correspondence. During this time the hotel manager continued to hurl insults our way, made false allegations and finally dismissed our complaints as ‘hogwash’.

Please. Please. Don’t waste your time or money. You won't get either back.

I read the reviews, they were bad. I called the hotel and was assured that they fixed the problems. I arrived and my heart sank when I saw the property...the desk clerk was sitting outside when we arrived and did not attempt to move until we asked if anyone was working.

the room had 1 key and for the door and when we asked for another one we were told no. the pillows in the beds did not match and the pillow cases were short dingy and wrinkled.

This place is the worst.Period

We arrived to a shabby Hotel that need massive updating. It took 20 minutes to check in and we were charged 250 US Dollars a night!

The Rooms are damp and equipped with old furniture and equipment. The Resturant is very very poor. One window had no glass in it. We did not feel safe in this Hotel.

As an international businessman I suggest you avoid this hotel and commute from Barbados to your meetings if you can not find a Hotel in Trinidad.

This guest obviously stayed during Carnival and he had a problem with the rate. I have no idea what window was broken and where since the restaurant does not have any windows.. It would have been interesting if he could have pointed out same to us as we are at a loss as to what he is speaking about. He also did not state whether there were many persons checking in at the same time as himself. The hotel has been upgraded since 2006, so this review really is unfair to the Royal Palm Hotel and we would recommend that the unfair old reviews should be removed and Trip Advisor update its web information as it is misleading and can lead to a case of slander.

Answer from susan345

It is better to get someone to visit the premises BEFORE you check in to see for yourself what the rooms are really like. The reviews are from people who demand discounts and because they do not get same, they will stoop to low and underhanded means of discrediting the premises, including actually planting insects in the room and taking pictures of same.

I am not sure where "Maraval Suites" are listed online. We are The Royal Palm Suite Hotel. We have no such listing.
