The room was well decorated clean and well presented as shown in the photos. We received good communication with the provider who also recommended lots of local restaurants and provided tips on climbing Pen Y Fan. Based on the recommendations we had a well planned trip and enjoyed meals at the tea room and local restaurant as suggested. Pricing was fair and this was close enough to easily access Pen Y Fan although there wasn’t too much too do in Merthyr itself.

We stayed at the Rafters studio which was so lovely, had parking and was a great central location to get to the Brecon Beacons National Park. Whilst visiting, we completed a 20km waterfall walk, visited the Brecon Mountain Railway and took on the 4 peak challenge with Corn Du, Pen Y Fan, Cribyn and Fan Y Big.

It is self-catering though the kitchen is on the smaller size with only two electric hobs; i would recommend eating dinner out given the limited space :-) We'd also have benefitted from a little more storage for clothing, but that is only a minor thing.

James is a kind and understanding host and overall we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend anyone wishing to visit the area to stay at James' Places!

Good central location and is a great base to go and explore the Brecon Beacons. Clean, comfortable and very friendly.
You do have to walk up some steep steps to get to the room but it’s lovely when you arrive and great facilities too.

We booked this apartment so we could visit our daughter who lives in nearby Merthyr. All instructions to get in were very easy to follow and had no problems getting in. The room is very modern and clean and fresh looking. We were left a few home made welsh cakes and a bottle of milk for hot drinks. It is beautifully decorated and the bed comfortable. It was a self contained little flat with a kitchen that had a hob fridge and microwave so you could cook your own meals should you want to.
The exterior is deceiving as it just looks like a small pebble dashed house nothing to show how beautiful it is inside. My husband and I will return and stay here again.

I booked in here for 2 nights with work, and met James on arrival, who was effervescent and really helpful, it's close to the town centre and a short (but very steep) walk from the station. Good parking, and a great entrance hall lead to a great victorian house, tasyefully decorayed, with a nicely appointed room. One note, this is board only, but close enough to cafes to get a decent breakfast. Being only 6 miles straight drive to the Brecon Beacons and Pen Y Fan i think this is a great and inexpensive house to base your trip into the amazing countryside from.

The apartment is in the lovely house with free parking, very welcoming owner.

When I booked this place for our weekend getaway it was stated that this is a studio apartment however when we got there the lovely owner said that there is a room in our apartment that belongs to them and that they store their stuff in it.
Which we understand up to the point. It is not very professional to come into the apartment and use the room when the guests are inside. After it happened it felt like we were not renting a studio but a room in the house with the neighbours. Which spoilt our opinion about this place and the whole experience.

There is a nice big bed in the room, the only problem with it was that the sheet was coming off the mattress for the whole time because it was too small for the mattress.
There was mold on the wall in one place, it wasnt very pleasing to see it in the apartment.
The door in the shower was not closing.
In our opinion the apartment needs a bit of freshing up.
The kitchen definitely needs some paper towels and hot water because it is impossible to wash dishes in cold water. We assumed that for that reason the plates and cups in the apartment were stained and greasy.

Thank you.

i think the owners here have lost the love ? studio at the top of the house was dusty all over and needed a good clean, separate kitchen across the hall with no proper cooker meant microwave was only option and locking/unlocking door to go to toilet during the evening / night, tiny television, isolated location, there are better in the area

We stayed for 4 nights in the rafters suite, it was lovely and with the added bonus of your own kitchenette area. The location is great and was central for all things we had planned, maybe a 15min walk to the town centre but is at the top of a hill so be mindful for the walk back. Some lovely restaurants in the area (recommend the mine at cf47).

The hosts were great and provided us with loads of hints and tips prior to our stay which really helped.

The only downfall for me was the bed was too small (we originally booked Pen Y Ty studio which has a larger bed but the hosts moved us as the kitchen/bathroom is separated by a small corridor) at 7 months pregnant the bigger bed would have been better for us at the time of visiting, also there was no blind on the skylight in the kitchen area and no door so as soon as the sun was up so was I.

Overall fab stay and would stay again ☺️

Just returned from a lovely weekend in the studio James’ Place. I cannot fault the accommodation, the interior has been designed with an “industrial” type feel, lots of lovely features. From the funky foot shaped loo roll holder, the green sheep in the window and my personal favourite the rainbow dog statue! Note look for the “James was ere” statement somewhere in the studio! I was very surprised on check in morning to receive a call from the owner asking if there was anything else he could do make our trip special. I had made a mention in an email of our trip being for my husbands birthday, imagine my husbands delight that upon arrival to find a card and a lovely bottle of red was waiting for him! I cannot leave a review without a mention to the fresh Welsh cakes made by James’s mum, they are the best I’ve ever tasted! All in all highly recommend, fab attention to detail and we would definitely visit again! Loved it ! Thanks for a wonderful stay, we will be back!!
