Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I spent three nights at Winchfawr lodge with my partner and our teenage son. What a great find! The location is fantastic and staying in Merthyr Tydfil is ideal for touring the Brecon Beacons. Our chalet was very warm, clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. Gaynor and her son were very helpful and were available whenever we needed something. The views from the chalet are breathtaking. It was a home from home kind of stay and we loved it. We’ll be back and we’ll certainly recommend to anyone visiting the area.

I stayed at Winchfawr Lodge for the weekend as part of a party of five and had a fantastic time! Our host, Gaynor, was incredibly welcoming and helpful - her friendliness really helped us to settle in. The property is situated on top of a hill, creating the perfect vantage point for all of the stunning views across the area. The lodge was in immaculate condition when we arrived - very clean and well maintained - and had all of the facilities we needed. We would love to return to explore the area further and enjoy some more down-time at the lodge!

Had booked this place on booking.com for bank holiday weekend and was cancelled a week before we was meant to stay. Was told it had been double booked. This did not help us was a pain to find another place to stay. But eventually did find something. Be careful with this property double triple check all is ok.

Used this accommodation recently when visiting Black Mountain Cycle Centre and Bike Park Wales (BPW). It’s less than 10 minute drive from BPW. 3 of us stayed but the accommodation does sleep up to 4; 1 double bed and a single in the bedroom and then a fold up bed in the living room. The accommodation is well equipped with a nice little kitchen, good sized bathroom (shower but no bath), a small living area with a couple of 2 seater sofas abs a TV and a small dining area with table and 4 chairs. There is a secure area for bike storage which we didn’t use as we just left the bikes in the cars. Everything was absolutely spotless and in great condition; clearly this accommodation is very well maintained. The accommodation is very close to the town of Merthyr Tydfil so plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. I would definitely recommend Winchfawr Lodges and would stop here again next time I visit BPW.

The Winchfawr Lodge is a perfect detached bungalow with everything you could possibly want. Peace, comfort, warmth and a beautiful peaceful setting. Even though I only met Gaynor briefly, she was a lovely lady. We hope to visit again in the Spring.

What a lovely place to stay, Winchfawr lodge was the perfect location for us. Beautiful surroundings & tranquil in the evenings. We came to Wales for Mountain Biking holiday and Winchfawr is ideal base for this within easy reach of Afan Forest & Bike Park Wales. Bike wash provided was ideal. Owners are lovely and happy to help in any way to make our stay superb.

Our Son lives in the area and was getting married, so we needed to find self catering accommodation that would suit two separate families without feeling on top of each other - Winchfawr was ideal for this purpose. We had the downstairs apartment, which has two bedrooms (one a double, the other was a single - there is a put-you-up bed available which can fit in the main living area if an extra bed is needed). My brother and his family had the small bungalow next door, which has two bedrooms (one double and one twin). In both apartments we found the accommodation to be clean and have everything you could need. Our apartment had a wet room bathroom, which if you're disabled would be a great bonus. The only downside I could point out of the stay is that the basin in the bathroom is a hand basin and not an actual wash basin (there is no plug and no place for a plug to sit either) so that perplexed me a little. The males in our party commented that it made things more difficult for them to shave. Although we didn't use it, there is a separate laundry room next door, so if you've been walking in the hills and have got muddy and wet, there is somewhere to leave your wet gear. The outside area of Winchfawr has fabulous views across the valley. There are several seating areas, a great play area for young children and also a large barbecue area for guest use. Winchfawr being centrally positioned, was ideal for our needs to go to Brecon for the registry office service and then to Aberdare for the wedding reception. If we had more time, it would have been great to take advantage of the position of Winchfawr and investigate the walks in the area. Thank you to Nigel and Gaynor, the hosts at Winchfawr for making us so welcome. We will definitely consider returning in the future.

We would definitely recommend Winchfawr lodges - great base for heading to so many locations. The lodge is well catered for and the owners Nigel and Gaynor are so welcoming and lovely. If you like to walk then it's great that you can leave the lodge and head into town - it's quite a distance walking and down a big hill but there are plenty of things to view and shops on the way, even a Marks and Spencer's where you can stop for a cuppa. We didn't want to leave this lovely place and would recommend you go visit as well. Thank you again Nigel and Gaynor for being so lovely Angie and James x

Stayed in the 3 lodges with a group of lads for our Bike Park Wales trip this year! Cannot fault anything about the place, Nigel who runs the place was brilliant throughout our stay. The lodges were exceptional, very smart and modern, very clean, provided with essentials for self catering. We had no complaints and will deffinately return for future trips. We were blessed with 3 great days weather and the views from the lodges were outstanding. Very close to local amenaties and restaurants, and a short drive to the bike park. Everything you want and more! 5*
