Superb food, good service, nice rooms, very tranquil location. We had the tasting menu and it was excellent - a wonderful showcase of local produce with lots of foraged ingredients. Even the breakfast was a tasting menu too. The room was comfortable and just what was needed.

Stayed here for a midweek break to celebrate my wife’s birthday, the pre arrival corespondent was great and thanks to Kirsty for arranging the flowers as a surprise. It’s located on a B road in a very quiet location surrounded by wood, it’s a very relaxing place. We were meet by a very friendly staff member and shown to our room, we had room 8. The room is as described on the website and has a great deletion of teas, the Welsh cakes were great. We had a comfortable night sleep, but there was a gentle hum from the AC units below, but did not disturb us and we both had a great night sleep and woken by only countryside’s sound so tranquil. We went down for a couple of drinks before getting ready for dinner, the lounge are is nice and the drink selection shows Chris passion about supporting good local producers Kingstone brewery 👍. Great to see Chris actively in front of house and his infectious smile. The dinner is a taster menu with great local and home produced produce, there’s is an extensive wine list and a wine pairing offered, which is what we went for. There are three front of house staff and they are great and show their passion about what they are serving. The food is absolutely superb the best quality & cooking we enjoyed every course and also the cheese sections as an extra was great. The breakfast is the same as dinner local & great, again in a taster format which may initially look a lot but, the portions, section of ingredients and pace is great. This was a great stay and will be back. Thanks Chris & all your staff.

Tasting menu was excellent and the knowledgable Sommelier added to the experience with insight into what each wine in the pairing added to the course. The room was very comfortable, with hot drink making facilities. The location was ideal for beautiful walks from the hotel as well as some further afield

Just great across the board. Beautiful surroundings. Lovely proper restaurant with big tables not all crammed in together and even table clothes. Food was fabulous. Staff exceptional - couldn’t do enough for you. Head chef reassuringly in evidence. Wine list not boring. Room comfy and breakfast (although larger than we really needed given how much we’d eaten the night before) also great. Only one issue was that really they need to sort out the dimmer switches in the bedroom as these are clearly not compatible with modern bulbs and therefore annoyingly flickery. Other than that, wouldn’t change a thing. For info: the slope up into the car park is pretty steep and a bit uneven, bit tricky if your vehicle has low ground clearance.

A truly excellent meal - the eight course tasting menu was absolutely beyond expectations. Incredible food. The staff are attentive and friendly - nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely revisit. And the experience continued with a tasting breakfast - unexpected and absolutely delightful!

This was our second visit to this restaurant/hotel. The first was a bit of a disaster, with a storm causing a power cut about 2 courses into the tasting menu and the generator (exhausted by the previous day’s storm) failing to start. We couldn’t see what we were eating and had considerable difficulty getting ready for bed by inadequate mini-candlelight, but the chef/owner gave us a reasonable discount to reflect all of that, so it didn’t seem fair to review such a compromised experience. We promised we give it another try and are very glad we did. On the Sunday night that we were there we were one of only three tables and so a smooth pace of service was easily achieved. The new lady sommelier/head waitress/receptionist was efficient and personable: a big improvement in fact on her slightly unctuous predecessors. The food was exceptionally interesting and really like no one else’s, with it’s distinctive emphasis on fermented and foraged ingredients. The wine pairing had a number of very well matched oddities that we would never had ordered from a list but were pleased to discover and the sommelier talked informatively about them. By the standards of most Michelin starred establishments, both food and wine seemed above averagely good value (£110 food, £75 wine). The room was comfortable and well equipped though we did experience a couple of problems. Both the overhead lights and those beside the beds flickered unless the dimmer switches were turned down (which wasn’t great news as the lighting wasn’t over-bright at full strength. (I suspect the switches are simply incompatible with current LED bulbs.) Secondly the shower would only produce a trickle of water, while the bath filled in no time. Full marks, however, for a choice of 4 kinds of leaf tea, real ground coffee, fresh milk and a delicious homemade Welsh biscuit. At breakfast they had (since our previous visit) introduced a tasting menu instead of an a la carte approach. In principle, this was a very nice development, extending the Michelin-starred experience into the “morning after” and incorporating some unexpected elements like wild boar salami. There were just two drawbacks: first, the pace was agonisingly slow. (Not every guest has a day at total leisure ahead of them.) Second, the order of courses was eccentric. (Does anyone really want that sweet elements - eg a fabulous raspberry muffin – BEFORE the savoury courses, including the classic eggs, bacon etc. No one would serve dessert before main at dinner… So, all in all, we were very glad to have given it a second chance and will no doubt return, but it wasn’t quite the perfection that earns 5 stars. Apparently they plan a refurb, laying the groundwork for a second Michelin star, but that really will require the wrinkles ironing out.

Best restaurant I have been to in a long time. Fabulous tasting menu featuring local ingredients. Well prepared without the over processing of so must high cuisine. It lets the ingredients do the talking. Great service. Lovely rooms in a tranquil location. Well worth the journey.

Tucked away at the far end of the village, we stayed here for two days for our anniversary and we’re very content that we’d chosen to do so. The welcome was warm and friendly (and the service was excellent throughout). The room cool (on the hottest weekend of the year) and comfortable with a well appointed en-suite wet room. We enjoyed being able to sit on the terrace for a pre dinner drink surrounded by many of the plants that made their way onto our plates. The dinner was - perhaps as expected- both interesting and delicious. The bread - made with local beer - was PHENOMENAL. And the drink and wine list interesting and varied. What made me particularly happy was the breakfast (my favourite meal of the day) since it felt as though it was conceived and cooked with as much care as the dinner.
