We stayed here for two nights, unsure and concerned about safety during this pandemic our expectations were exceeded and the entire staff did everything they could to make us feel safe.

Set in the countryside a few miles north of the Cleddau Bridge the hotel is set in lovely grounds with plenty of car parking space. There is plenty of room to socially distance both indoors and outside in the lovely garden.

Our rooms were spotless and comfortable with lovely views over the countryside and all the amenities one would expect in a hotel room. As covid restrictions prevented the rooms being serviced extra supplies of tea, coffee, milk, etc. were available at reception.

Breakfast was delivered punctually outside of our bedroom doors and consisted of a breakfast bap, piece of fruit, pastry, yoghurt, small piece of cheese plus water and a fruit juice. Certainly enough to set one up for the day.

Our evening menu was arranged with a fixed menu with vegetarian option and was served quickly and efficiently by the staff and was certainly sufficient for even the heartiest of appetites.
The only negative was that to order drinks you had to scan a QR code with your phone to access an ‘app’ and then select and pay online. Although initially challenging for some of us once set up the system worked very well.
We shall certainly be returning in the future.

I stayed here for 3 nights on a business booking and my expectations were greatly exceeded.
The hotel is set in lovely grounds, there is plenty of room to socially distance and credit to the owner for making everything seem normal.
My room was spotless, comfortable and had a lovely view of the garden.
In these peculiar times breakfast was delivered punctually to the room in the form of a breakfast bap and various sundries. A good idea and I did not feel I had missed out in any way.
The evening menu changed daily; the pate and homemade curries were particularly tasty. All of the staff were friendly and efficient.
The only negative was that the affable owner was an iron man champion from around the globe so you may feel guilty when you order a large slice of chocolate fudge cake.
I look forward to returning next month, but I had better forego the desserts!

I feel obliged to inform that this hotel and staff have a great approach to the current pandemic. The general approach and polite reminders help to enforce and maintain the difficult rules in this challenging climate. The delivered to your room breakfast was a great compromise to the usual format of my morning meal.

The food and service were good. However, if you were staying more than one week you may get tired of the same menu. That being said, it’s possible that specials may be available in normal times.

I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again, and thoroughly enjoyed my visit.

Firstly, when trying to book stay and contacting the hotel we were advised to call back in 1 hour due to being very busy with a wedding activities presumably a meal at the time? (was not our fault there was no one to cover reception in this period). However when calling back and given specific codes to apply these also did not function as expected and the manager / reception person was abrupt and not very helpful. However we finally booked at this time under duress. Although covid restrictions had now been lifted by the first minister prior they were still offering breakfast in you room with the cooked item served in a polystyrene container what you would expect to be served at McDonalds, whilst other items were loose and all being served in a paper carrier bag. Although breakfast was served in you room as advised upon arrival (reported upon arrival due to some people having had covid the pervious week) but, the hotel is still functioning?) we were then asked if we would like to book a table for evening in the main hotel. (Work that out for yourself if you can). Although you are advised to open all windows to allow good ventilation this window did not function correctly so could not be left open in a safe condition throughout the day. It was also a mainly a self maintain room with all required items towels, toilet rolls etc being left on table in the adjacent hall along with waste bins for which rubbish to be deposited. And to complete our visit, woken up by dogs barking on our final morning All in all a very poor service "Would we stay again No"

We were told on the first day that the breakfast we ordered would be delivered in brown paper carrier bag with plastic cutlery and expected to eat from silver foil. On the second day I felt unwell as I am a cancer patient so asked to have toast, however I was told that I had to have the same breakfast as my first day order for the entire week. I felt upset. We only received a breakfast menu on the third day after complaining. The menu for the evening meal was limited and the same all week but was served on a plate. However, having ordered baked potato it arrived raw but was told it could not be sent back for further cooking and would not be replaced so I ended up eating very little. The room was good and the hotel surroundings were nice. The menu and management were disappointing so I would not return to this hotel.

Response from William Smallman, Owner at Beggars Reach Hotel
Responded 17 Sept 2020
Thank you for taking the time to review Beggars Reach. I am sorry that your expectations were not met on this occasion. With Covid-19 risk assessments still in place it is very difficult to satisfy everyones breakfast requirements and we are still currently offering a 'grab-and-go breakfast' which comes as standard. Your comments are very important to us as it helps us identify and resolve any shortcomings.

Recently visited this hotel and on the positive side is the quiet location, beautifully kept grounds and a reasonable hotel building.

Unfortunately it all changed at the point of check in.

The hotel are using Covid as an excuse for poor service, lack of staff and keeping costs down.
Breakfast is delivered to your bedroom in a paper bag, your rooms are not serviced at all, my colleagues were resident for two weeks and the breakfast order was wrong at least 50% of the time, their rooms were not serviced (even on a two week stay), The bar closes at 10pm and the few staff there are are under pressure and consequently not very attentive..... or interested in any issues.

At the height of Covid some of this could have been forgiven, but as the hotel are serving full meals in their open restaurant on an evening without restriction, there are no Covid restrictions in place at the bar or communal areas, it is therefore obviously a cost saving for the hotel, nothing else.
When questioned about the breakfast and plans for the future, we were informed there were no plans for a breakfast service in the forthcoming months.

For anyone considering stopping here, I would recommend checking with the hotel re the level of service before booking.
I would never recommend anyone booking a Travelodge instead of a hotel, but on this occasion that would have been a better choice.
All of this is a pity as the hotel has great potential, but it is being very badly ran by the current manager.

We have both stayed at this hotel overnight on Saturday , the hotel and grounds are lovely, they are trying their best to book people in with COVID still around. We had a lovely meal and a drink in the bar, however, I think the breakfast brought to your bedroom door in a takeaway bag is over the top. If they can book up to 60 people in for an evening meal they should be able to allow people to eat breakfast in the choice of 2 rooms. We refused this and we had our breakfast downstairs as did three other couples.

We stayed one night only thank goodness! Staff very friendly grounds lovely
We had an evening meal we both had trout which was cooked well, but veg tray bake
very dry and dried herbs used on lemon garnish,

Considering the hotel is surrounded by country side we would have expected fresh veg
and with the grounds they have surely they could grow some fresh herbs.

The breakfast was disgusting scrambled egg and toast in a bag which we could either eat in our room carry across to hotel, could not in our room only one chair and tiny table for two. Coffee provided in hotel nothing else no cereal etc and no breakfast staff

Stayed here with a group for five nights. Room never freshened up, if you need anything like fresh towels or tea etc you must ask. Terrible food, overcooked, not fresh tasting, OJ in a carton, packaged baked goods, I could go on, just not good food at all. The female staff was pleasant and helpful, The owner and manager are not, to say the least. I would not have chosen to stay here in the first place, and I will never stay here again. The grounds are lovely, and it is quiet, but this place has some issues. Perhaps Covid related? Not sure....

When we first arrived we were just given a key and were directed not shown too our room manager/owner appeared a little fraught. We entered our room to which we were very disappointed for £125.00 a night were expecting a little more for our money. The room definitely needs updating but was perfectly serviceable just not for the cost. Nothing was in the room that states breakfast or dinner protocol or how to call room service we had to search this online which was a little inconvenient. Breakfast in the morning was a grab an go ordered to your room in a bag delivered on time however not that great this is only however due to the covid restrictions at present. We had an evening meal which was good the staff were great and happy to please. The second day of our stay we attended a wedding to which all staff on site were helpful Happy very attentive the food was amazing, service second to none. The Staff and managers/owners are what makes this hotel and what made this sure a pleasurable stay.
