Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Have eaten here before and always found the food excellent. We were a group of 7 and were all disappointed with our meal in this occasion. They usually have a varied and interesting menu but this time it was limited- fish and chips and ham and chips, chicken and leek pie, burger -seemed a bit more pub grub/ cafe lunch fayre rather than their usual a la carte. No specials either on a Saturday evening approaching the Christmas run up. However we all enjoyed our main meals. I had the Seabass with popcorn cockles which was one of the few “different” things on the menu and it was nice - the caper sauce was very MarieRose/ prawn cocktail ish but the popcorn cockles and the fish itself was stunning. The biggest disappointment came with desserts. Most of us ordered the Turkish Delight Pannacotta and we were all very disappointed with it. They had very little flavour and were more like blancmange consistency rather than pannacotta- mine was particularly flavourless. When i complained I was told mine was a different batch and I was offered a Baileys Chocolate trifle as an alternative. This too was awful -i ate about a quarter it was mostly just whipped cream with a bit of baileys , no sponge or chocolate layers /sauce , just one note in terms of flavour and texture. My friend ordered waffles which were like cardboard/burnt toast. When she went to complain the waiter /barman told her “don’t you start as well”. I am not sure if this was meant to be humorous or a serious comment but For 5 /7 women to be so disappointed with there desserts says something. The 2 who had cheesecake and the ice cream enjoyed theirs. At £7 per dessert they were not cheap and although we complained specifically about the desserts there was no offer to deduct them from our bill. Needless to say we did not leave a tip and will not be rushing back for our friends birthday in January

Lovely people, great service and pretty good pub food. Our doubke room was clean, but very small. The bathroom and shower tiny. Biggest problem was the very intermittent wifi. Made watching TV in the room (internet only) or working impossible.

Wonderful pub and hotel, incidentally also great value. The food was amazing with excellent vegetarian and vegan options - in fact there is a whole separate vegan menu which everyone should check out because you should really have the sticky cauliflower wings! Great beers on draught too. Very friendly and helpful staff. The bed was very comfortable, clean and smart room with good facilities and toiletries. Highly recommended.

If you love food, you will absolutely love The Lion. Omg, I thought I had died and went to Gastro Heaven. The staff are attentive and look after you from start to finish to make your experience as pleasant as possible. Mark, the owner is on hand to help his staff make everyone's night the best night possible. The chef was definitely forged by the gods as the food is absolutely astronomical.

The Lion Hotel, is a very lively and vibrant place, we took our grandson to big pit for his birthday so we went for a overnight stay rather than drive all the way back home in a day , we had a couple of issues with the room at first but they were sorted out very quickly and efficiently, the staff were very helpful and couldn't have made our stay any better, the food and beer was equally good, i wish we had a place like this in our village 😀 cheers.

Good: 1. Staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. 2. Breakfast was good. Prompt and tasty. 3. Off street parking. 4. New mattress along with soft & clean sheets & towels. Bad: 1. Noisy area, especially on Friday & Saturday nights. Not the hotels fault, but worth bearing in mind. 2. Room was very hot and stuffy. The window was shut when we arrived and smelt like it had been closed for a few weeks, even though there was a heatwave. Could only open the window a few inches so didn't sleep well. Room definitely needed better ventilation as felt claustrophobic in the heat. We were provided with a fan that was half broken. 3. Marketing material kept mentioning "newly refurbished", but I think this was quite some time ago now. There was mould in parts of the shower grout, the carpet was grubby, especially round the edges, and the heater was full of dust. We obviously didn't need to use it though. There was little attention to detail regarding cleanliness. Behind the toilet was a bit gross, too. They've definitely over-sold the whole experience and not updated the photos in a while. In fact I've just checked and the photos are 9 years old! Overall an average stay. If the room was properly clean and there was better ventilation I'd be able to rate higher. We didn't use the spa area as we didn't trust it would be cleaned properly and hadn't really planned on using it anyway.

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to review us here. I just wanted to address a few of your points. As a nearly 250 year old building, 9 years is still quite a new refurbishment and it still looks exactly like the photos as the building is refreshed and maintained on a regular basis. I'm not sure what room you stayed in but I have gone around personally and I can't find any of the issues that you have mentioned in your review. It would be helpful to us if we could have some more information on what room and when you stayed with us.

It was a lovely experience, I brought my friend from Canada to stay there. Amazing food, brilliant service. We had 2 separate rooms. My friends room was great ( everything worked) , My room ( TV DIDNT WORK) was very difficult without a tv working . So I thought, thank god I had my I pad ! Well that was short lived , when the wifi didn’t work with my iPad. Spent the evening looking up. Lol ! Just kidding. Spent the rest of the night asleep

Nice hotel, lovely restaurant with good food very reasonably priced. Excellent breakfast and proper coffee! The room was comfortable. The bathroom very nice but no natural light and poor lighting. Light fitting on one side of the bed not working and reading light flickering on and off. Claw foot, roll top bath very nice but water goes down the back of the bath leaving damp black marks on the floor underneath. Room quiet and bed very comfortable. Enjoyed our stay. Staff lovely.
