Value
The Anchor Inn is a traditional Drovers Inn dating from 1888 and still retains a lot of its original features. Since purchasing the Anchor in 2006 we have made some positive changes whilst sticking with traditional Scottish pub values. The nautical theme has been kept and the open fire makes for cosy surroundings. We pride ourselves in creating a welcoming friendly atmosphere and serve draught beers, wines and spirits. In the kitchen our long serving chef provides you with an exciting menu to choose from and all our meat is sourced from the local butcher. If you are a Coleslaw fan then you really must try our chef's homemade recipe as it is locally renowned. At the outset of taking over the Inn we focused on building the accommodation side of things and thus now have a total of fourteen new rooms all except one are fully ensuite. They have been built to a highly modern standard and are tastefully decorated again with a nautical/Scottish theme. Six of these rooms command stunning views over the Gareloch and the surrounding mountains.

Pleasant pub with rooms either on site on in buildings nearby. Bar is nicely decorated. My room was in a nearby building and room was comfortable and clean however sound proofing was non existent - heard every footstep of my upstairs neighbours as floorboards very noisy. No view of the loch instead looked onto a wall. We had an evening meal which was quite good but a lot of delays getting food to our party however we were offered free desserts which was a nice gesture. At almost £100 for a room/night I felt breakfast could have been included instead of extra.

Ourw family group of 4 attempted to check into an AirBnB which turned out to be totally unacceptable! Being in a new and unfamiliar place, our daughter and son-in-law wandered up the street and walked into The Anchor Inn while my husband and I waited. The Anchor Inn Manager met us with a smile and took us in. He personally lead us to 2 nice, clean rooms. He took our orders for breakfast and let us know the kitchen would be open for dinner since we were starving. When we came back down to the charming dining area, he fixed us delicious cocktails and started a rip roaring fire! The food was quite tasty and the experience was wonderful!

We stayed as a last minute getaway, after reading the fantastic reviews we had to book as never been to Helensburgh before. Upon arrival we had to park out of the way as nowhere close unless you used the bus stop (not ideal for disabled customers as my Husband is) we checked in easily with Jack showing us to our room around the back of the pub. First impressions it was an old converted home with 3 rooms upstairs and 1 below us. The decor was lovely up the stairs & landing however a lick of paint is needed in the room itself. The bed was sooooo comfy which is so important so that was definitely a plus, the bathroom was spotless apart from the towel rail which I think they must forget its to dust and the room itself was clean the bedding was so soft I even ordered myself a set. We had a few drinks in the bar before our evening meal. We both ordered steak I did ask for well done but I couldn't eat the whole thing as it was charcoaled, the peppercorn sauce was very bland and anaemic looking (maybe they used white peppercorns instead of black) the dessert was absolutely delish 😋 I had mint chocolate bomb and Hubby had sticky toffee pud which smelt devine. We wanted a large bottle of red wine, the only one we actually wanted and there were none obviously we were disappointed but the country is in a delivery crisis so no fault of theirs. The bar had plenty to choose from and reasonably priced, the locals were in good spirits and the staff were so friendly. We retired to our room which was facing the beer garden so it was noisy until after 1.30am from what i believe was a birthday party. I would like to make a suggestion regarding the rooms on that side, either get blackout blinds or turn the adjacent outside light off as it literally kept me awake all night. We booked breakfast for 9.30am which we were looking forward too as the barman had told us it was a continental style with cereals, yoghurts, fruit then a full breakfast so £9 pp seemed reasonable. Oh dear this is where they faultered dramatically, we sat down and a lady came with toast and asked if we would like tea or coffee, we started buttering our toast when out she comes with a full scottish brekkie. Where was the cereals? Fruit etc, we ate what we had which was lovely the poached eggs were spot on but I'm sorry this was not worth what we paid for. Finally i asked the person behind the bar about the cereals, yoghurt to be told they don't put things out anymore because if its on the table everything has to be thrown out. I watched him putting 6 jugs of fresh orange down the sink (SHOCK HORROR) ask the guests if they want fresh juice before putting jug out what a waste. Anyway we left straight after feeling very disappointed in the breakfast.

At £103.00 per night room only, in Room 5, which is situated in one of the houses along the road, rather than the Inn itself. The people above who were in a balcony room, not sure If it’s a privately owned one, you can hear everything but particularly the loud creaks of the floorboards from 6am until 1130pm.
There was no one around during the day to report this to, all the shutters were down when we went out for the day.

If you change your mind and want breakfast there is no one around to ask. On check out there was no one around, but we found a cleaner to leave the key with.
Be warned when you book direct - non refundable is self explanatory, but buy now pay later, once you have booked is also non refundable, non changeable so it’s misleading. Too late once you press the booking button.

We have just spent an amazing time at the anchor inn. The staff are brilliant and the manager Chris is exceptional going out of his way to accommodate us. I cannot praise the accommodation itself highly enough. Clean, comfortable and friendly. The food on offer is also of a high quality and very affordable. The staff go out of their way to provide whatever you want even if it’s not on the menu. we will definitely be back and will recommend to everyone. Wonderfully situated to visit lots of places. Thank you Chris and all the team for a wonderful stay😊😊😊😊

What a surprise this pub was. The exterior completely disguises what the inside is like. We stayed one night and were met by Chris who was extremely friendly and welcoming. The inside is a proper pub! It has a a wide variety of drinks and the food was excellent with large portions of everything. The bedrooms were lovely, large clean and all the amenities you could possibly ask for, at a very reasonable price. Chris and Andy went out of their way to ensure that we had everything we needed with a wonderful friendliness. It is the local pub to the village, and the locals in the pub were equally nice to us. Breakfast which is a small extra cost was tremendous, had everything you could ask for. Our only regret is that we only stayed one night because of our schedule, but next time, and yes there will be a next time, we will stay a bit longer. Well done the Chris, Andy and all the staff. Thank you very much.

Lovely little place with well turned out rooms. Excellent location with bus stop outside which can take you round the peninsula and to Helensburgh etc.

Staff very friendly and very helpful.

Had some noisy neighbours in room opposite who were a bit out of order but that wasn’t the owners’ fault.

Would recommend.

Lovely friendly place - we felt very welcome here. The room was lovely - warm clean and comfortable.
Garelochhead is a beautiful, "real" wee town, with fantastic views and lovely drives around about.
I'd be delighted to return.
