Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Had a great experience here. Food and service were excellent and the venue was clean and tidy and cosy, gave off a really warm and Christmassy feel which added to the experience. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Often travel the A68 for work, always wanted to stop off and try Carfraemill. Glad we did, phenomenal service! Warm and welcoming environment topped off with great food. Definitely a hidden gem, think we’ll be squeezing in a stay and a few post meal drinks to break up the work trip next time. Highly recommend!

Met here with extended family for a meal, they had been a few times before and enjoyed the experience. However, I have to agree with recent reviews as I found the menu options limited, the fish pie was no better than a store bought ready meal and a choice of only three basic beers at the bar. On the up side I did enjoy the coffee. I'll not be returning.

What happened since the last time I visited...not that long ago may I add. Overpriced menu, tasteless food (e.g. Macaroni Cheese ehh where was the cheese?) Burger that you could of used as a building brick and as for charging £15 for it, bit of an insult. Staff in restaurant are fine but think they need to review the Chefs, majorly letting the side down. Doubt i'll be back, shame as could be so much better!

Waited 1hr 25mins to be served our meals. Staff were pleasant enough but rushed off their feet. Venue has potential to be lovely but get rid of the plastic plants, blankets on backs of chairs, cow skins on the floor. Gordon Ramsey needs a visit. It came across as a very low end restaurant with uninspiring pub food. Not sure there was much positive about our visit tbh.

This is such a wonderful place to stay. We stayed there for a couple of days while collecting my daughter from University as we thought it might be nice to stay a little outside Edinburgh for a change. Our room was just lovely, overlooking sheep, rabbits, and a couple of oyster eaters who had just produced chicks. It is very quiet. All the staff were helpful and couldn't have been nicer. My sister and daughter had cooked breakfasts - full Scottish and Vegetarian but I was hooked on the banana split with fresh berries. Everything was delicious. We ate in the restaurant one night and the food was lovely but my chicken shashlik was so enormous I couldn't manage a pudding!.. We will definitely stay there again.

Friendly welcome from staff. Fast service. Great tasting food. Also dog friendly inside and out! We went on Friday evening and again on Sunday for the lunch. All the staff are very attentive and really want to make sure you have a good time. My hubby had the prawn cocktail for starters and the main was steak and ale pie with mash and peas. With sticky toffee pud after. I had the haggis popcorn for starters and the chicken stuffed with haggis new potatoes and roast veg for main with crème brûlée for after. Then on the Sunday hubby had the prawn cocktail and roast beef dinner with cheesecake after. I had the haggis popcorn again as it was so good. Then I had the mushroom risotto. Too full up for a pudding! All food was really well presented and well cooked apart from the beef a little underdone for hubbies liking. Certainly rather scrumptious! Hope we can return again in the future. Thanks again to all the staff in particular the assistant manager for looking after us so well. We and our two doggies had a lovely time!

We stopped there for food on the way back from borders to Edinburgh. That was our first visit. We ordered soups, stake pie and fish and chips. Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection, huge portions. Lovely place, friendly staff and good food. I really recommend to visit.

Drive right past ! First visit since being taken over and will be the last . The fact it wasn’t busy should have been a red warning light as this place was always busy. The staff are very friendly but unfortunately that doesn’t make up for poor quality , tasteless food , grossly overpriced. Burgers were tasteless at £15 served with the tiniest pot of coleslaw I’ve ever seen ! Desserts starting at £6.25 !!! I don’t mind paying for great quality food but sadly you won’t get it here. Mediocre , overpriced menu . I wouldn’t recommend to anyone ! Sorry , you need to up your game to encourage any return custom here !

I am writing this review in response to our wedding that we had at Carfrae mill during April 2023. What can I say.. the staff were absolutely outstanding and provided an absolute top service! Every single one of them was lovely, professional and so helpful. The day itself all went like clock work and the food was delicious! I can’t thank them enough for making our day so special. There aren’t enough words to express our appreciation! The hotel and rooms, are all clean and tidy. The bar and restaurant has a modern new look too! The bedrooms were also kept in good order. Cosy and well presented! Breakfast had plenty choice and was also very tasty! We had our wedding ceremony and reception in the marquee, of which again, was a beautiful space that we decorated ourselves beforehand. The staff were superb again, at shuffling tables/ chairs/ wedding decor around to transition between various parts of the day. The whole team are gold standard, and this is clear in everything that they do and deliver! Lovely venue, rooms, food and service! Whether you are having a meal, staying the night or holding an event, we highly recommend Carfrae mill!
