Ok, we're local and feel rather spoilt to have the Ulbster Arms Hotel just a very short drive. Having dined in the beautiful restaurant and the bar many times, honestly it was such a lovely treat to dine in the Library, with all the sofas removed and tables spaciously set, to enable social distancing at this difficult time.

The cosy log fire and tasteful country house decor creates a very peaceful, intimate and welcoming atmosphere. The staff were so attentive and so welcoming, it was such a treat to dine with our friends close by. The hotel has gone to great lengths to ensure processes are in place to aid physical and social distancing. It is not an easy balance and yet we felt truly cared for.

The food... too delish. Hats off to the chef and all the team. My duck breast was so tender and the crispy black pudding log just melted in the mouth. My husband enjoyed a very tender sirloin steak with the best peppercorn sauce and accompaniments enough to feed the hungriest of appetites. I almost tucked into one of his onion rings, but I was already replete! The desert menu had my eager sweet tooth at the ready, but I was too full to place an order. Leisurely coffees followed.

We were the last to leave, which gave us a few moments to soak up the atmosphere, so homely, with the best dressed windows. At no time did we feel rushed. On leaving, hand sanitiser is strategically placed to allow everyone to once again be reminded how cared for we felt. Well done the Ulbster Arms Hotel, our thanks to Anthony and Sonia and all the team for a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

A wee tip for others... book in advance, they are so good, they do fill up quickly.

We stayed overnight in a room in one of the Lodges which was large and comfortable and I particularly appreciated having a bath to soak in. Dinner offered a good choice and was one of the best meals we had in Caithness. The staff were very helpful and overall the standard of service and accommodation was very good. We would happily stay there again.

We had booked a lodge with the Ulbster Arms and were given the Ulbster Arms Lodge for two nights. It was absolutely lovely. The lodge itself is really spacious and comfortable. There is a great living area and three spacious bed rooms. Due to the Covid restrictions there was only us in the lodge. The hotel was great overall with Covid measures and we felt very safe. The lodge was spotlessly clean and the staff in the hotel couldn't have done more, there was plenty of sanitiser all over the hotel. They were very friendly and really went the extra mile. We even ordered food from the restaurant and they brought it to our room so we didn't need to mix with others. Overall a fantastic break in a lovely hotel with great staff. Highly recommend and we'd go back anytime. Thank you Ulbster Arms!

First off is to acknowledge how difficult it must be to deliver hospitality during the Coronavirus pandemic and just as the lockdown is easing. Hotels have a huge responsibility to keep guests safe while at the same time helping them to relax and enjoy the hotel.
We loved our room with a view across to the river. It was all very tasteful and in the style of the country home it must have once been.
The evening meals were gorgeous and such as the blade of beef that just melted in my mouth.
Staff were helpful and listened to any concerns or queries.
I look forward to returning once Coronavirus has been eliminated.
Thank you to the manager and night manager for staying calm and having a sense of humour when technology let you down.

Me and my partner were undecided on where we were planning to go for lunch, we seen on Facebook that the Ulbster Arms Hotel had an amazing menu and we decided to go here. From walking in the door to leaving the building we had nothing but top class service, the girls at reception were very kind and had such polite and inviting manners, the young man (who’s name I didn’t catch) was so attentive and went above and beyond. All staff were dressed very smartly also.

Our food was delicious, we both had haddock and chips and it was the nicest fish I have had since I can remember, it was beautiful. We also shared a sticky toffee pudding which was also delicious and finished our meal with a cappuccino and it was very tasty. I’m so impressed. We then proceeded to reception to get our bill and were even more happy to see the bill was under £40, for the quality of it we would have paid more.

Thank you to all the staff and we will be returning very soon 😄

From the minute we were seated in ‘the library’ to the minute we left the staff were very attentive. Wide choice on menu as well as a daily specials menu. We had duck and linguini followed by a delicious pudding of sticky toffee and apple and blueberry crumble with butterscotch sauce. Can’t fault it! Highly recommend.

When we stayed there were many fishermen and you got the impression they got the service and the rooms.
The food was OK nothing special but you got the feeling the chef was really trying. I don’t think the service level is helped by being totally staffed by young girls with limited experience. Although pleasant they are not front line hotel staff.
As for the room, we’ll more like a student dormitory: functional but nothing else certainly not worth the price being charged.
The view of a load of old huts, a rent o’kill van and another assortment of workman’s vans because the lodges are also used for workmen.
We saw a hotel nearby but did not stay in one sadly.

We stayed here in August to celebrate our engagement and we were looked after so well!
Breakfast and dinner were extraordinary (we never had lunch so cant comment on it) and they have a beautiful selection of wines to go with dinner. The bar is full of local gins and whisky and the decoration of the bar is so welcoming, the restaurant for breakfast is beautifully decorated also and is so spacious. I had crab and prawn cocktail to start and it was so fresh and delicious. I then followed on with a rare steak which was cooked to perfection. My fiance had the scotch egg to start which was beautifully cooked and then the haddock and chips for main and again the haddock was so fresh and so tasty! The staff are very pleasant to talk to and very helpful for any requests we had. Check in / Check out was a very simple process, and our room was immaculate. We really couldnt fault our stay, and we will 100% be back very soon.
Thank you to all the staff at the Ulbster Arms Hotel!

We stayed one night, and had dinner and breakfast in the hotel. Several minor things with the room disappointed us, such as being an old building the internal noise travels into the bedroom, and we were on the front which is floodlit on the outside so even with the blind closed it never got dark in our room. But the village is quiet so not problem with external noise. The main positive was the food at both dinner and breakfast, both of which were excellent.

Very average, unfortunately poor staff service. Taking "extra" long for basics such as clearing plates( we were one of 3-4 tables so not busy)
A note to the staff too.... please please don't say you have a whisky list only NOT to have a whisky list.
Note for management, a drinks menu wouldn't go a miss either alongside some staff moral (I know it's a Thursday night but hearing staff more interested about their latest trip to skins than getting the job done wasn't great!)

Overall for the chefs, good quality food. And a steak cooked brilliant. 👌👌
