Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Even before I mention the food, I must say that, to me, the most surprising thing about this place was that you were required to pay upfront for your whole meal! To me, paying before you eat is unpleasant, inferring that the place doesn't trust folks not to abscond without paying the bill. I found this practice somewhat unacceptable to say the least. It also negates the right that you have not to pay (and leave your address) if you are totally dissatisfied with your meal (which I have never had to use, by the way). For starters, I had a prawn cocktail, which came in a tall sundae glass (looks nice but is not practical) without a suitable long spoon with which to eat it, so the contents had to be tipped onto the small plate that it came on to eat it. My wife had pigs in blankets, which she considered OK but that they had been bought in, ready made, in a packet. I had a 6-ounce fillet steak, which was pretty average in quality, especially compared to a similarly-priced fillet en-croute, with all sides included in the price (you had to pay £3 extra for each side, including chips, at The Amble) at one of my favourite other establishments. My wife had a mixed grill, meats including chicken, sausage and a small piece of steak, complete with gristly bits. Again, this was average in size and quality, as compared to that similarly priced at another of our favourite eateries. Sides were £3 each again. Ales were OK, at normal pub prices but wine was dearer. On asking the respective prices, I was told that it was a good job that I had chosen what was described as their house wine, at a normal price, as any others would have been considerably dearer. Overall then, a pretty average meal, further spoiled by having to pay upfront for it.

After our first visit and the disappointment of the evening meal we decided to try again on this stay as we had seen there was a new chef on reviews. We were very happy with both meals served and would now definitely like to stay again and use the restaurant. Breakfast still great plenty of choice. All staff we met were friendly and helpful.

Had an overnight stay, room was clean and comfortable, food was lovely.. but more importantly, the front of house staff were so friendly and helpful. I mistimed (entirely my fault) the breakfast time by 45 minutes.. This was a much needed mini-break from my 24/7 caring duties at home and frankly I got carried away by the comfort and peace of my room.. Instead of making me feel foolish for confusing the times the staff sorted us a full and delicious breakfast with no fuss and good grace.. I was so gratreful. Special mention to the lady (didn't get her name but she wore her hair in a long plait) who took time and trouble to make sure we were well cared (and catered) for.. Thank you so much, your kindness was greatly appreciated..

Always a great stay at an excellent hotel in a wonderful location. Very highly recommended - the value at this time of year (November through to March) for Dinner, Bed and Breakfast is amazingly good.
