Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We love staying here when we are up in the area. Always friendly welcoming staff, great food and comfortable room that's clean & pleasant. With arthritis I'm fussy about beds - no problem here, super comfortable bed. Advise arrive hungry for dinner, the portions are generous & you won't want to miss out on delicious starter & sweet as well!! And if you are staying you want to have space for the famous breakfast too..... I'm not a fan of filter coffee but they have a delectable blend at breakfast that I love. And don't miss out the vegetarian haggis... Definitely recommended stay!!

The restaurant was terrible. The food has went downhill, the steak was tough in the steak pie, the potatoes were hard with the salmon and the staff were rude. None of them were friendly, and we took our young child (who is only about to turn 3) and he was treated harshly. We went late in the evening and he was getting tired, but a certain member of staff - who we were astonished to find was an assistant manager made our child cry from telling him off! Absolutely horrible experience and would severely not recommend especially if you have kids 😕

We visited the pub for an evening meal with my family due to staying in the local area on holiday. The food was absolutely delicious & generously portioned. The landlord was lovely, really chatty and made us feel very welcome. Definitely worth a visit.

Our family (Newsbit ancestry - now live in the United States) came to The Castle Inn to visit Dirleton Castle, Gullane & Dunbar. We stayed two glorious nights! The staff were amazingly warm, friendly, kind and accommodating. Thank you, Castle Inn team, for making our excursion to Dirleton a wonderful experience. The food was outstanding! The Scottish breakfast to die for. The Scottish generosity unmatched. Thank you!

On a whim, we decided to have lunch while waiting for the castle to re-open. What a fantastic place! The food was perfect and yummy. Wayne, the Bar man, was so very friendly and accommodating. He went out of his way with a request from us. I will make sure to return and have a couple of meals when visiting Dirleton again in the future. We visit this town every year and this place is my new “go to” place! Thank you Wayne! That hot chocolate was brilliant!!!

Brilliant food & service. Such friendly staff. Popped in & it wasn’t a problem to have a few drinks in the beer garden before having our own candle lit table ready whenever it suited us. It was our first visit. We will be back!

My husband and I went for a lovely meal at Castle Inn tonight. It definitely did not disappoint, my husband had the Panko Chicken which he said was delicious. I opted for one of the specials Venison with red wine jus. The venison was one of the best I've had. The staff were excellent as was the whole ambience.

My mum and I went for lunch at the Castle Inn and it did not disappoint. From the moment we arrived the service could not have been better, friendly and professional and the atmosphere was amazing. The country pub was busy and had a friendly, warm atmosphere and the staff could not of been more helpful, often you get pressured to eat and drink quickly so the tables can be turned around, this was NOT the case here and it was a lovely relaxing lunch and the food was to die for and the options for small and large portions was brilliant as due to a health condition we were not pressured into massive portions. A special mention to all the serving staff and the owner who was a on hands owner which you do not often see and safe to say we we 100% will be back and the specials we had and the triple cooked chips were amazing! Well done to the chef and his team also for brilliant piping hot dishes!
