Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A magical stay with wonderful food, idyllic views and most comfortable room. Although I travelled alone I met many people (evening in the bar!) as well as agreeable staff. The breakfasts were amazing as well as the evening meals. My room was small (as stated) but perfectly equipped and despite the storms I was able to enjoy the days walking and visiting parts of the island.

We experienced such kindness and support from Linda when the wind blew our car door shut and locked our keys in the car. She couldn't have been more helpful! We were actually camping behind the church, just above the hotel, and booked in for dinner that evening, so not even staying there, and she couldn't have been more accommodating. We enjoyed hot chocolates in the bar, and warm hospitality. Unfortunately, a storm blew in and we decided to abandon camping, but they were fully booked, so they called the Bunkhouse for us instead. Touched by everyone's kindness though and will return!

I remember you well! Julie not Linda but that doesn’t matter! We are always open to welcome campers, yachtsmen, walkers as well as our hotel guests for refreshing drinks in the garden or a hot drink to escape a storm. We are here for everyone. Everyone will help you if they can, I’m so glad this was your experience. Come back soon

Thank you so much for the most wonderful stay. We stayed here after getting married on Coll at the start of September, and everything was wonderful from start to finish. The food was absolutely delicious, with the seafood platter at dinner being one of the best meals I've ever eaten. The perfect place to relax with beautiful views out to the bay, even from the bath! Thank you!

Didn't stay here but had dinner one night and I was really impressed with the food and service I received. Dining alone can be a bit nerve-wracking but right from the first acknowledgement at the bar I was put at ease. Service was amazingly good, even though it was a full house and all my servers were so lovely and genuine I felt truly welcome. Since my last visit in 2016 a new dining room has been added which offers jaw dropping views across the bay. The food was outstanding, beautifully presented and very tasty. They also had Heineken 0% which I really appreciated. I would definitely recommend you book as you don't want to miss eating here.

The island is beautiful, and the hotel is in a beautiful location., and recently expanded and completely renovated. Unfortunately, and quite surprisingly, the staff was much less than welcoming. I spent a week there, and was there for four days before someone actually greeted me with a smile and a bit of friendliness. It’s as if most of the staff is not thrilled to be there, which makes one wonder, what is going on with management? After my first night there, I asked for them to check my heater, because my room was so cold at night that I had to wear my socks! That night, my room was warmer, but every night afterwards, it was cold. It seems that they only run the heaters at a minimal level, and only for parts of the day no matter how you adjust the radiator. The bed was abominable. There was a huge dent in the mattress that engulfed the half of the bed closest to the door. So I had to stay on the far side of the bed to be able to sleep. I guess it was a good thing that I was solo, because two people would have been miserable! Management told me the mattress was only 2 yrs old, well… as if that made it ok? that doesn’t mean much, the fact was, the mattress was horrible, and needed replacement. I’m sure I wasn’t the first person to let them know about it. I made an attempt to spend some time in the bar in the evening and get to know the staff, but they were stone cold and completely made me feel like a bother. The only indoors common area, other than the bar, is a “library” of sorts. There are some chairs and sofas crowded so close together that it’s hard to move around them, a completely messy disorganized bookshelf, and minimal lighting, which sometimes wasn’t on at all. One night I tried to sit and look at a book from the shelves, but there was not enough light to read by. The best thing about the hotel was the restaurant. Dinners were excellent. Breakfasts were great, however they are not available only from 8 am, until 9:30. Their guest information states that if a person desires an earlier breakfast, that can be arranged, however, some friends tried that, and were treated as if that was a great trouble. One morning I asked if they might put my breakfast into a “to go” container, and while they did accommodate me, they made me feel as if this was a terrible imposition. Overall, it was a very disappointing stay. On this particular trip, of 15 nights, I stayed in 6 different hotels/guest houses, and all except this were incredibly comfortable and the staff were welcoming and helpful. There are other options for overnights on Coll, and next time I will be staying elsewhere.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review for us and I’m sorry we did not come up to your expectations. We have an exceptional team of staff who all have hospitality at their very heart, I’m sorry that you didn’t have that experience. We are so happy that you enjoyed your meals with use. Our kitchen team work hard every single day to make and present delicious meals for so many people, we are very proud of the whole team and what they achieve. Our heating is on 24/7. Our housekeepers are guided to turn down radiators and open windows on hot days and turn up radiators on coolers days, I’m sorry if this was not your experience. Breakfasts are served 8-9.30 , we are happy to offer early breakfast to hotel guests to eat in or take away, no problem at all. Again I’m sorry if this was not your experience. You did mention to me about your bed on departure and we had a lengthy discussion about our mattresses and how your issue could have been resolved. It was a shame that you left this discussion until the end of you holiday with us. I agree that our lounge is small but as we have so many other beautiful, light & bright spaces to sit with stunning views it is usually used by guests to store their luggage on arrival and departure and not much else, again I’m sorry this didn’t suit you. We are truly sorry to hear that you feel so negative about your stay with us, this is not something we are used to but will obviously take your comments on board, especially at exceptionally busy times of the year.

Following a very relaxing holiday in May we couldn't wait until next year to return, so we came back for a few days in August. On arrival/check in, everything was, as expected, perfect. We settled into our favourite room (number seven) and found it clean and comfortable. The view from the room over the water is stunning, regardless of the time or the weather. It's time well spent watching the changing light as dusk approaches. There is a TV in the room but we have never switched in on in either of our visits. The food is superb, well presented and of a high quality. The bar area was very busy on one night but we were still served fairly promptly. As residents, we were seated in a slightly quieter area near the main lounge sitting area. Its a nice touch that as residents our table was ours for as long as we wanted. As mentioned the bar was very busy one night with locals. It was very pleasing to see local people enjoying the hotel, they obviously think a lot of it. The grounds are spacious with plenty of seating dotted around the grounds. The location of The Coll is mid island, so access to the north/south is pretty easy, especially if you use the bikes supplied by the hotel. It really is a lovely hotel, so much so that we have confirmed our booking for the coming May. All the staff are very good especially the very pleasant gent from Hastings who checked us out. The plus points of the island are too numerous to mention, the beaches, the machair, the bird life. Its all there and more, love it.

Spent a fantastic 4 nights here in July. From the minute Paul picked us up from the ferry to dropping us off 4 days later, they simply couldn’t do enough for you. Room was exceptional, food at breakfast and dinner was superb and the bar had plentiful nice beers from Nathan to top it all off. All the staff from reception, housekeeping and waiting/bar staff were brilliant. The hotel also offers free bikes which was a great way to explore the hidden corners of this beautiful island. We’ll definitely be back ❤️
