Detailed Reviews
We’ve just stayed here for 4 nights, and had a great time. The bunkhouse is really nicely laid out - a lovely living area with wood burner and large dining table, two adjoining well-equipped kitchens, bunk rooms with comfortable beds and handy little extras like USB charging points, and plenty of good showers. It was spotlessly clean. Perfect for our group of 10 children and 9 adults. Alex was a really helpful and welcoming host- nothing was too much trouble for him and he was full of helpful advice. We loved the island, it is a beautiful place with breathtaking views, the best beach around (Kilmory), plenty of wildlife, and amazing walks. The locals were friendly and helpful, we ordered groceries from the small shop and they were delivered to the bunkhouse ready for our arrival! Thank you Alex and team for a lovely stay.

I spent a week in the isle of Rum and took accommodation in the bunkhouse. What a treat that was! The bunkhouse is a wonderful place to stay; it surpassed all my expectations and I felt like at home in there (well, in truth my home is not that nice and comfortable!). I cannot recall the last time I slept and rested that well.
Alex and Paul made me feel welcome and were very helpful providing me with loads of information about the island and the various walks in the area. Luckily the weather was rather benign in January and managed to do a few
interesting walks with breathtaking views, from which I returned cleansed. Be ready for the wildlife! Even if you are an early bird and plan to head for the hills early you might end up lingering over the breakfast table of the bunkhouse entertained by seals playing in the bay and the curlews flying and feeding in the shore. Take your binoculars with you and you will have endless entertainment in the warmth of the lounge. The kitchens (there are two) are magnificently equipped and are very inviting to cook, either for yourself or for a bigger party. The living room is beautiful, very comfortable and well lit for reading or writing in the evening. I had many a enjoyable moments in there conversing and looking at the photographs taken during the day. Now the question: can you think anything better than taking a well deserved rest in that warm and comfortable lounge after a nice walk and a hot shower? And you can review the highlights of the day in good company and a hot drink or a glass of red wine. Pure bliss.

Stranded on the island due to storms, I was able to secure accommodation here for two nights at very short notice. Alex couldn’t be more helpful and welcoming, making my dog and me feel perfectly at home.
The dorms were clean and in good condition. Shower and toilet facilities were also clean and well stocked. There are plenty of pans, boards, knives, crockery and cutlery to cook pretty much anything you want from either of the two adjoining kitchens. The main common room is a beautiful space to occupy. Large sliding glass patio doors open out onto two sides, giving great views down Loch Scresort. There is also a covered outdoor area. There are two large wooden dining tables as well as more comfortable settees and chairs, with the main focal point being a fabulous log burner, complete with a large supply of wood just outside.
I couldn’t fault this place, and with major renovations coming in the next few weeks it should be even better. Looking to a more planned visit very soon.

Was our second time at the bunkhouse this year, having visited two years ago in June of 2022. We really like Rum, and we really like the bunkhouse! There's a reason we keep coming back. The bunkhouse is clean and comfortable. The showers get hot quickly and have great water pressure (something we find is often missed out by remote hostels). Alex is a fantastic host, available to answer any questions, queries, or curiosities, and a great conversation partner in general! We're already planning our next trip to Rum, and our next stay at the bunkhouse...

Bunkhouse is very comfortable and well appointed and in a lovely situation overlooking Loch Scresort. When we were there it was about half full which meant there was no problem of congestion in bathrooms or kitchens. It was very convivial and we enjoyed the company of our fellow guests. Jim was very welcoming and kept the place immaculately clean and tidy. There is a small community shop nearby which stocked a decent range of food to suit vegetarian and non vegetarian diets plus a selection of booze and various essentials such as midge spray. Don’t visit Rum if you want bars, souvenir shops and other such facilities but it is a great place if you want wonderful walks (covering a range of different levels of challenge) and great wildlife and the bunkhouse makes a great base from which to explore it.

Stayed here for a few nights on short notice as we were working on Rum.
A little pricey and the duvets were a bit short and not very thick but on the whole a lovely well-equipped bunkhouse.
Cracking view, well-kitted kitchen, red hot showers, loads of space and a fabulous living area with a log-burning stove

We've just spent two nights in room 5 during covid restrictions and the place was perfect for us. Alex the warden was very helpful with advice before our stay and met us on arrival.
There was only one family staying so we essentially had the place to ourselves. The kitchen was very well equipped and much more organized than the last time I stayed.
There are limited places to stay on Rum so those that don't want to rough it too much should get into the Bunkhouse.
Thanks Alex for your help and we will see you again.

Came here for 2 days to try Rum.
Booked online and had to change dates to get in here 2 months beforehand, so book early!
It is 15minute walk from the jetty and you have to take your boots off and wear a mask in reception, so bring indoor footwear!
It has recently been refurbished. All the rooms are very modern, well equipped and comfortable. Showers are lovely, beds great, kitchen and lounge also with great views of the bay.
Service and help excellent. I can’t fault it and fully recommend!!

Wonderful, peaceful base for exploring Rum.
Warm bedrooms, spacious lounge, drying room, and lots of kitchen space. Recently refurbished. Ultra clean.
Great views across the bay.
10 minutes walk from the ferry, 5 minutes walk from the shop, and, of course, great shorter local walks, plus longer walks direct from the door.
Warden Alex is extremely helpful.

This is one of the best hostels ever. Great showers and plenty of them and toilets. Two lovely kitchens with all you need. Huge lounge/dinning room. Huge windows on three sides. Views brilliant. Watch the wildlife come near at night. Alex is so helpful.
