Sandhill House is the perfect country retreat to escape and enjoy exclusive accommodation and relax looking out over the breathtaking Tamar Valley. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage Site, this luxury retreat is the ideal gateway to explore the fantastic natural environment and world changing heritage including Dartmoor National Park. Sandhill House is the perfect country retreat to escape and enjoy exclusive accommodation and relax looking out over the breathtaking Tamar Valley. Please see our regularly updated Blog for local events and activities. This enchanting, privately, owned Grade II Listed Georgian home is set in 2 acres of landscaped gardens with stunning, un-interrupted views over the Tamar Valley and Dartmoor National Park beyond. It has recently under-gone major refurbishment with guest room facilities including king size beds, beautifully appointed en-suites, free wifi, and Freeview TV/DVD and a hospitality tray in each room. This luxury countryside retreat is perfectly located at the gateway to explore both Devon and Cornwall and also historic Tavistock which is just 10 minutes drive away. Sandhill House's exclusive location, at the heart of the stunning Tamar Valley in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage Site, make it the perfect retreat for couples or singles, for walking, cycling, golf and exploring National Trust and Royal Horticultural Society properties, or for work if you prefer to avoid the big hotel chains. Newly converted, the self-catering Tamar Orchard Barn is set in the peaceful 2 acre grounds of the house and is 'dog friendly'. The open plan living area retains features of the ancient listed barn but is designed in a contemporary style that echoes the character of the old orchard Barn. Facilities include a king size bed, beautifully appointed natural stone shower room with under-floor heating, well-appointed kitchen area, free wifi, and Freeview TV/DVD. The Barn's French doors overlook a south facing rose garden, which is dog secure, where you can just relax and enjoy the bird song or alfresco dining from the BBQ, whilst absorbing the breathtaking views of the Tamar Valley. You are welcome to treat yourself to a special cooked breakfast in the main house. Whether staying in the luxury of the B&B or the Barn, you are always welcome to relax in the unique, horticultural 'treasure trove' gardens. There is a local 'dog friendly' pub within walking distance, which serves excellent home cooked lunches, whilst other local hostelries offer evening meals, most of which are also 'dog friendly'. Unfortunately, due to the ornamental ponds, the property is not suitable for children. There is plenty of free car parking space. Bustling, historic Tavistock is just a 10 minute drive away and the world famous Tamar Valley line terminates at Gunnislake Station, which is just a 5 minute walk down the carriage drive. This B&B is run on an ethical basis, with local and ethically sourced produce.

We have recently had a week away at the Tamar orchard barn which is a holiday let in the grounds of Sandhill house.
It was a beautiful place to stay the grounds of this house are amazing.
We were sent a number emails of how to find the location by Mary and she also gave us lots of information prior to our arrival of what was on offer in the local area to see and where to eat, which was very helpful.
On arrival Mary and Andrew came out to meet us and show us around to the barn which would be our home for a week, it had all that you require for a week away including a very well stocked fridge with lots of goodies.
I cannot fault anything we had an amazing week and would highly recommend, I even got a sighting of two deer playing in the field on the last early morning walk .

Thank you so much for your very kind review. We are so delighted that you really enjoyed the Tamar Orchard Barn, with it providing everything you needed for both yourselves and dear Pepper. We are also pleased that you enjoyed this 'hidden' part of Cornwall, which is truly dog friendly, with walks both short and long, with a great pub at the end. Thank you so much for choosing the Tamar Orchard Barn for your precious holiday and we just hope that you will come back to the Tamar Orchard Barn, to carry on exploring, when you can next escape to the country.

We stayed for 1 week at Tamar Orchard Barn set in its own private garden within the grounds of Sandhill House. It's extremely private and a real rural oasis for a getaway. The kitchen is quite small but modern and extremely well equipped considering its limited size. The bathroom is fitted to a very good standard with hot water running quickly on demand. We found the king-size bed very comfortable and despite the relatively cool weather enjoyed sitting outside most evenings. On the couple of evenings where we had to retreat inside there were 2 comfy armchairs and also a small dining table and chairs. Being located in the middle (between the north and south) we found it perfect for heading out in a different direction every day, like spokes of a bicycle wheel. Most evenings we were greeted by the lovely, charming and placid Fudge (the dog) upon our return. Our host Mary was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the local area. Overall a great experience and place to stay.

Sandhill is a delightful place to stay, peacefully set in the beautiful Tamar Valley. We spent 3 nights here as we were running the nearby Tamar Parkrun (rightly advertised as one of the most attractive Parkrun courses in England!). Our host Mary made us very welcome and shared her excellent local knowledge for places to visit and eat. Our room was extremely comfortable and attractively furnished, as is the whole house. There was an excellent choice for breakfast with lovely local produce, beautifully cooked. We were delighted to have found this accommodation and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone visiting this area.

We've just completed one of several recent visits to the Tamar Orchard Barn at Sandhill House, where we were joined by family members staying at the B&B house. There have been many complimentary reviews about this location and the accommodation and we can but add one more! The facilities, the location, the attention offered by friendly and courteous owners cannot be in any way faulted. We can only add our own strong recommendation that the experience should not be missed. We will be returning!

Dear Tony and Sharon Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to post a review for us and for your very kind words and recommendation. We are just delighted that there was nothing to spoil your precious holiday and that you really enjoyed exploring this beautiful but 'hidden' part of Cornwall. It is humbling and very uplifting that you would like to return and we just can't wait to see you and Sherry and Ember again, whenever you can next 'escape to the country', with very best wishes Mary and Andrew

We’ve just returned from a fabulous break at Sandhill House. Mary looked after us and my disabled father in law like we were family, nothing was too much trouble.

The rooms were fab, ours overlooked the chapel and my father in laws room had stunning views over the Tamar valley. The rooms are spacious and you can see the quality of everything in there.

Breakfast was a real treat and once again quality ingredients and great cooking came to the fore. It’s easy to order too much as the choice is fab. The cooked breakfast was excellent but the scrambled egg and salmon was on another level.

We really enjoyed our short break and meeting Mary, Andrew and Fudge (aka the butler) made our stay extra special. A big thank you to Mary for going the extra mile and treating my father in law to a birthday cake and afternoon tea, it helped make his day very special.

We’ll be sure to stay again when we’re next in the area!

A beautiful, restful place to stay, in an exceptional setting. We thoroughly enjoyed being at Sandhill House. We were warmly welcomed by Mary, Andrew and the adorable Fudge, who all went the extra mile to make our stay special. Our room was extremely comfortable and had a gorgeous view over the Tamar valley. Breakfasts were delicious, and offered a good choice. We enjoyed some great discussions with Mary over breakfast! We can thoroughly recommend Sandhill House as a lovely place to stay, as it is so reasonably priced for what is on offer, and there are some interesting places to visit nearby.

We were incredibly lucky to be recommended to Sandhill by previous guests. Mary and Andrew are the most charming owners of this beautiful Georgian house and also the chefs of the best quality breakfasts we have ever had. The bedrooms are spacious, beautifully decorated, immaculately clean and the beds are superb. Lovely touches such as electric blankets, fresh flowers from the garden and en-suite with toiletries made our stay so special. If you want to escape for a while and enjoy peace and tranquility then this lovely place is where you want to be. Thank you for such a lovely break .

We absolutely loved our stay at the Sandhill house! Set in the beautiful scenery of Cornwall, the accommodation was just as beautiful and we would like to specially thank Mary, Andrew, Fudge and Theo for the very warm welcome.
This was our last holiday before our new arrival and we were blown away by the kind and caring hospitality we received during our stay. We wish Mary all the best and hope to return to the Sandhill in the near future.
Thank you from Amrit and Suman x

Dear Amrit and Suman Thank you for your very kind words; we really are blushing! Many thanks for choosing to stay with us; we are so delighted that you enjoyed your stay in the beautiful, and hidden, Tamar Valley. We are also just so pleased that you were comfortable and relaxed at Sandhill House, for your long awaited holiday. I can assure you that Fudge 'the Butler' was very sad when you left. He 'knew' and wanted to 'protect' you! We wish you all the very best wishes for your imminent arrival and very much hope that we will meet you again soon. In the meantime we hope your happy memories of your holiday will keep you going until you can next escape to the country. Very best wishes Mary, Andrew, Fudge and Theo XXXX

Travelled down to Cornwall for a VOUZ! Magazine location shoot with my wife Corinne to this highly recommended Country retreat Sandhill House. Excellently positioned above Plymouth , nestled in the beautiful Tamar Valley AONB

So we drove up the tree-lined drive to be met by the most beautiful country house and valley views ,and what struck us first was wow how quiet and secluded this all is!

Stunning house and gardens and a lovely serene atmosphere - a proper country retreat!

We were met by our lovely elegant host Mary and made to feel instantly welcome. The interior has perfect historical features which so makes a change from the corporate blandness nowadays and immaculate throughout.

The room was beautiful a with a view to die for over the Tamar valley. We were here for two nights but next time it will be more. We have been in many hotels in the UK and abroad and this has to be the quietest and most relaxing.
A very reasonable room charge indeed for such a special place and also very looked after by the attentive and friendly host with fabulous breakfasts.

Would recommend this to anyone who loves high standards, friendliness and above all, peace and quiet!

Dear Robin Oh my! We are blushing here! Thank you so much for your very kind words; we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us. We have to admit that Fudge really missed you the next day. As the 'butler' he had been on furlough far too long, so he was such a happy boy, 'butlering' and then you were gone! We just hope you can find reason to return to the stunning 'hidden' valley again, perhaps for a longer stay. I know one thing, Fudge will be very pleased to see you, as will we.
