We spent two nights at the Crown & Castle, exploring the East Suffolk coast from this convenient location. Orford itself is beautiful and there is an easy 2 hour walk from the hotel front door.
We were lucky enough to be allocated Room 1, looking out to the sea and Orford Ness. It has a bay window from which we saw a spectacular sunset. The bathroom has a bath and a separate shower, just perfect for us. Covid-19 meant no servicing of the room, but extra towels, bath foam etc were freely available. We had a really comfortable two nights in Room 1.
The Crown & Castle promotes itself as a restaurant with rooms rather than a hotel and the food at dinner and breakfast did not disappoint. The team responded really well to dietary allergens too. For dinner on our first night we were offered seats in an area of the restaurant where there were three other tables in use (all complying with social distancing). it turned out that the occupants of these three tables all knew each other and over the course of the meal they got louder and louder conversing with each other as if they were all on the same table. It was getting uncomfortable for us and was beginning to dominate our experience. Perhaps I should have said something to the waiter, but in actual fact when he came to offer us dessert, he suggested that maybe we would like to take dessert and coffee in the bar area where we might be more 'comfortable'. This was a great suggestion from the waiter (Maciej), who then once we were away from the table told us that he had noticed what was going on and felt for us, which is why he made the suggestion. He also said that the dessert (we had the cheeseboard which was very tasty, full of local cheeses) was on the house as a small way to compensate for what was clearly not a great experience for us.
Full marks to Maciej for both his empathy to us and also his ability to do something about the situation. If only more front line staff in hotels and restaurants were as perceptive and empowered to act as he was.
All in all this is a great place to come and recharge batteries. No wonder that it featured in a Top 25 list of 'cosy hotels for winter' in the press this weekend.
Would definitely recommend!

Stayed here a couple of times now, the coastline in Orford is a perfect place to go walking. This hotel is located near the Castle in the centre of Orford. The best part is the food - had dinner here on several occasions all of which was amazing! Breakfast has an amazing variety of choices - my partner even had a Mexican breakfast! Rooms vary on location, some are located inside the main hotel, others a short walk in outer buildings. We stayed in one of the higher end rooms (Terrace room) which was a very good quality and standard. We have also stayed in one of the Best House rooms, this had amazing views towards the water but was noisier. All in all a good choice for a short break and doing exploring in Suffolk.

The Crown & Castle made our trip to East Anglia. From the welcome to the dining everything was very well presented in these difficult times and made all guests feel so comfortable and safe. Not at all pretentious and like the village of Orford a real delight. Accommodation is either in the main building or various garden rooms or converted older buildings within the ownership of the hotel. Dining was perfect with a varied menu for dinner and everything we ate was most enjoyable. Nothing was too much trouble to make your stay memorable.
Highly recommended.

We stayed two nights for a family celebration. The quality of the food and service were variable and at times very disappointing. Feels like they are trading on the old reputation, and at the current quality level it is overpriced. Individual staff were very good and a small treat for Mum on her birthday were appreciated, but it needs to be consistent. Also, why have marmalade from Wales...what happened to local food?

We had a garden room, and it was large, comfy and quiet. The food was all excellent, both breakfast and dinner, and the service was generally attentive and uniformly friendly. Although it was mid-October when we visited, the hotel was almost fully booked, so the car park was usually full when we arrived after days out, but we managed to park in the village square a few steps away. Orford is a good location to explore nearby attractions like Sutton Hoo, Snape Maltings and Woodbridge, and also has the Pump Street Bakery and Pinneys for smoked fish and other foodie goodies.

We count ourselves as very lucky that we were able to get a last minute cancellation at the The Crown & Castle, its situated in the most gorgeous village ( lovely walks) and is blissfully quiet. The helpful and warm welcome was very much appreciated but the highlight of the stay was a wonderful meal in the restaurant. For the level of culinary excellence ( I'm still dreaming about the lamb) it was very good value too. We stayed in room 3 which had a lovely bathroom, huge soft bed and nice touch's like homemade cookies and fresh milk to make your own tea/coffee. We will definately be back and have told lots of friends already :-)

A small and comfortable hotel with friendly and efficient staff. Everything was thought through with quality products and care. We stayed to visit a nearby restaurant and investigate the estuary but by the look at the menu and our love of the hotel it is a go to place to eat as well.
The outside rooms were quiet and faultless with two armchairs and a desk chair, patio doors into the garden and a magnificent view of newly repaired Orford Castle just a couple of hundred metres away. with close car parking Thank you to a kind and efficient staff.

The staff at this hotel are excellent, and particularly personable, making you feel genuinely welcome. This is a great hotel for owners wishing to bring their dogs, since the staff understand what it is like to be a dog owner and are great with dog visitors. The garden rooms share a private garden area where you can sit and watch your dog safely mooch around and play. The hotel cuisine includes fresh local smoked seafood for which Orford is well known. Lots of opportunities for walks in the area through the estuary nature reserves, and a short drive to Southwold, Aldeburgh and the famous Sutton Hoo Viking museum, OrfordNess has lots of interesting military history to discover if that is your thing.

Utterly superb in every way, delicious food, excellent service and the most comfortable bed ever. We loved the way our little dog was made to feel welcome too. The fact that we could eat dinner and breakfast without fretting she would pine without us, (as she had a blanket and water provided beside our table) was exceptional.

Do any of the house rooms have a walk in shower
Answer from Kevin L

Yes we had a walk in shower. We were in one of 2 rooms outside the main building overlooking the castle. It was great. As its summer now you have a balcony you can sit outside and enjoy a drink looking at the castle.

Hello, there are five dedicated Garden rooms that are dog-friendly but dogs are not allowed in any other rooms. Whike this is absolutely the case, just mention your wife's allergy on booking (phone 01394 450205) and we will make absolutely sure you have a certified dog-free room.
