The Fleece At Ruleholme emerges as a refined retreat, with guests regularly extolling the hotel's rooms for their comfort and modernity, accentuated by spotless environments and delightful complimentary treats. While the hotel's atmosphere is generally seen as stylish and serene, a few visitors have noted the ambiance can be marred by loud music.
Service quality has received mixed reviews, ranging from commendable attentiveness to occasional disorganization. Although opinions on value differ, with some finding the hotel affordable and others pointing out pricey extras, the amenities, including dog-friendly options, are frequently celebrated.

Detailed Reviews
My husband and I booked here because we were helping our youngest son with his move to Brampton nearby and it was the nearest hotel.
Honestly I think this hotel is the best I have ever stayed in ........ and I've stayed in a few being over 60!
Whoever did the interior design is amazing! The whole place is beautiful throughout.
We had room number 6 which is on the corner of the hotel and has dual aspect with massive windows and a lovely view. The bathroom had an amazing walk in shower and a separate deep bath tub. All the fittings were modern and luxurious - even the bathroom mirror was a touch screen lighted one! The complimentary toiletries were hand made locally and smelt fantastic.
There were complimentary drinks in the mini bar of local craft beers and G&T's which were very welcome after our 5 hour drive to get there. Posh tea and coffee in the room was also a treat in the morning and we both had a good night's sleep in the very comfortable bed.
We ate in the restaurant in the evening, which was a tad expensive, but the quality of the food was well up to the price tag. I had the chocolate device for dessert and it was genuinely the nicest dessert I have ever had!! All the restaurant staff were friendly, attentive and very polite.
Breakfast in the morning was also a true pleasure. The menu was far above the normal hotel fare. I had poached eggs with avocado and chill on sourdough bread. The eggs were cooked perfectly ....and I am very fussy about poached eggs! Again the service was brilliant. Our waitress was very efficient and friendly.
I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough ........... it's just a shame that it is so far away from us otherwise we would definitely be regulars. But we will be back next time we visit our son!

My wife had booked us in to the Fleece for a weekend break as a gift for my birthday.
We arrived and were met by friendly and knowledgeable reception staff and were soon heading for our room.
The rooms are large, modern, and light, have exposed wooden beams and ooze character, there is a coffee table and tub style chairs, the beds are lush, and there is a larger than normal TV with a full range of channels. As you would expect there are tea and coffee facilities supplied. A really nice touch is an ice bucket filled with ice left in the room.
The bathroom is spacious with a large shower area which featured a 'rain' shower head and ancillary body jets. Bath robes and slippers are supplied, as are environmentally friendly bath and shower products.
There is a lovely and relaxing lounge area behind the reception desk with comfortable sofas, and a vast range of books for you to while away the hours.
Dinner was superb and very tasty we both enjoyed the feather blade steak and accompaniments along with a very tasty sorbet for dessert.
The breakfast area was lovely and bright and the sold oak features were fascinating having been constructed using traditional methods. Breakfast was plentiful and of good quality.
Bar service was excellent with drinks being brought to our seated area in the lounge or in the bar.
As you can gather we had a fabulous time......but what really made the stay memorable was the service we received from the staff which was absolutely first class. Worthy of mention is Scott (the manager), and Anne (from housekeeping), but all the staff were lovely and helpful.
So thank you all for giving us such a memorable experience and a wonderful stay at your hotel. You should all be very proud.

My husband and I recently enjoyed a lovely two night stay at the Fleece at Ruleholme. This recently opened hotel catered for all our needs. The food in the restaurant was delicious, and the choice and variety at breakfast was exceptional. The bedroom was spacious and well furnished with lots of storage and a few additional treats and it was great to find a bath and Cumbrian made toiletries in the bathroom. We particularly noted the efforts the hotel had made to support local British based companies. All the staff couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful but a particular thanks goes to Laura for telephoning us several times to ensure we were able to book a table in the restaurant.

First impressions can be misleading but this attractive new addition to the staying and dining scene in Carlisle, deserves support and for us did not disappoint as far as the dining element is concerned. We have not sampled the overnight accommodation but if the standard of fittings and decor in the restaurant areas are anything to go by the bedrooms will be equally good.
The restaurant areas are very spacious with a variety of different settings and table styles and for a Saturday lunchtime it was pleasantly busy. The menu for lunch is quite extensive and the prices reflect the standard being aimed for - this is not just typical pub fare but imaginative and modern types of dishes attractively served. There are light bites for those with a small appetite and vegetarians are well provided for. Perhaps fish could feature a bit more in the menues.
The standard of cooking and food presentation was pretty good, the
portions generous and the food hot, but the range and style of dishes obviously presents a challenge for the cooking team and service was just a little slow. There is background music, which seems a bit unnecessary in a full restaurant, but many may not mind this.
This new courageous development certainly deserves support and the fact that it is open seven days a week makes it additionally attractive.

Having watched this place emerge from the ground over the months it had always appealed to me, I took the plunge and booked a treat for Mrs B and myself. We took advantage of the Sunday Lunch package which included lunch, a supper platter and breakfast as well as an overnight stay.
Greeted by friendly staff we were shown straight through to our table to enjoy a leisurely lunch which arrived beautifully presented and piping hot in the luxurious restaurant where no expense has been spared. Lovely quality fixtures and fittings and an enthusiastic, professional and personable group of serving staff.
After lunch we were shown to our room which was large and airy. The no expense spared policy obviously extended to the bedrooms too and again we experienced a beautifully appointed bath and bedroom with many “touches” including locally manufactured, high quality toiletries, choice of both shower and bath, blackout curtains, super comfy bed and easy to access, reliable wifi!!
Our sharing platter of local cheeses, quince jam and oatmeal crackers was offered with wine and served in the sumptuous “library” with it’s green oak, hand cut and pegged joints and triple height glass atrium really hit the spot
We enjoyed a lovely night’s sleep in our noiseless and completely blacked out bedroom before moving on to the next part of our trip but not before a delightful breakfast served in The Bridge! While Mrs B tucked into muesli, granola and toasted brioche with yoghurt, fresh berries and honey which strangely she said she really enjoyed, I followed a fresh croissant with a truly fantastic “full Cumbrian” which is to be highly recommended!!
So, in conclusion, not an inexpensive place to stay but well worth the extra if you want that special “something “ that the chains just don’t provide!!
We’re already planning a return trip!!

Stayed here for a few days with my mother and what a lovely place, very comfy rooms has everything you need e.g fridge (some charges apply), safe, TV, coffee/tea facility, dressing gowns, the bathrooms are very nice in fact The Fleece is done to a very high standard. The staff are very nice and helpful a little slow with the service but nothing major just being picky. The food is lovely, we noticed people just calling in for a coffee bringing their pets and pets can stay overnight also. I would highly recommend staying in this lovely relaxing place, well worth a visit and would definitely come back 👍.

Stunning, Quality, Tasteful, Friendly, Great Value…
What a transformation the Fleece has undergone since our last visit:
On entering reception and being amazed at what we saw, A lady called Kate was very friendly and attentive and briefly explained about the changes.
Everything was totally different and amazing - A credit to the owner.
The overall ambience was warm & welcoming with some really nice touches.
It was a busy Saturday Evening, but the service was excellent with plenty of pleasant and helpful staff, the food and drink menu was quite extensive and excellent value.
Our room was very comfortable with some really nice touches including the complementary drinks in the fridge.
The full Cumbrian Breakfast was very tasty and good quality, especially the sausage.
All in All a really enjoyable stay – We will be back along with some of our friends.
Would whole heartedly recommend – you certainly will not be disappointed.

I had purchased a Travelzoo voucher for a 1 night stay with breakfast and dinner at this lovely hotel and we were blown away with the staggeringly good value we received.
Our experience here really was superb - all staff we encountered were very welcoming and friendly and the customer service we received was great. The hotel itself exudes quality from the decor to the fixtures and fittings. Clearly a lot of money has been spent but it is in keeping with the building and the local area.
We loved the art work, especially the ginger cat picture in our bedroom that reminded us of the ginger cat we had left at home.
The complimentary mini bar is a lovely touch, as are the local toiletries and the Illy coffee machine. The soft toy dog to indicate "do not disturb" is a novel idea too.
Dinner was lovely and breakfast was delightful. We hope to return in the future.

Beautiful hotel, stunning view our room was spacious and luxurious with double doors. The bathroom was what we all dream about, the attention to detail throughout the whole hotel is outstanding and well thought through. The staff where very attentive and nothing was too much trouble, the food was exquisite and reasonably priced. I charged our EV vehicle the charger was simple to use, very fast and reasonably priced.
Such an amazing place and we can’t wait to return.

I have to laugh when I read other reviews which allege bad food and poor service. My wife and I had an overnight stay and ate dinner in the restaurant and it was truly excellent. We did have a (welcome) pause between courses but I think that is because everything is done fresh and at the right time when we are ready to eat it. Great food, perfectly cooked. A good range of wines at reasonable prices. This entire place has been furnished and decorated to a VERY high standard. An excellent breakfast - I admit it was not fast in arriving, but that is not a problem when all it indicates is that everything has been carefully prepared to order.
