Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed at this family owned hotel on May 23-25, 2022. We had a lovely stay. The hosts were very friendly and we had no issue with wifi. The breakfasts were pretty good and the rest of the meals are served family style. Kudos to the cook and staff as they were very tasty and reasonably priced. The place is small, has about 5 rooms/huts and it is right on the beach. You can actually hear/see the ocean as you have your meals. The hotel doesn't have a pool, but it is right on the beach. You can definitely swim in the beach and the ocean is quite warm. The place is quite rustic, it had an open/enclosed shower which we loved, as you get to see the trees while you shower. As it is rustic, it has a lovely charm and yes mosquitoes. The beds have netting though and it is very clean and well maintained. The only drawback to this place is that it didn't have AC, however they do have fans. As Canadians, we melted in the heat at night, but we still had a great time. It is in a quiet area, close to Playa Blanca in Baru, about a 15 mins taxi ride. We loved our host and enjoyed our stay. If you are looking for a something quiet, with charm and away from the chaos and party life of Playa Blanca, but close enough to it, then this place is just the thing.

Absolutely loved this hotel in every way. It feels very much connected to and respectful of the nature around it. Despite being rustic, we were so comfortable and absolutely loved the accommodation. We also stayed in fancier places on this trip and Playa Manglares was by far our favorite. The owners and staff are so friendly and welcoming. The hotel is small and intimate - there is a central eating area and the guest parties sit apart at large tables that allows you to stay private but is conducive to socializing. During our stay all of the guests groups became friendly and eagerly chatted at mealtimes. I visited with my young son and he happily played all day with the owners children. There is no AC, but we were very comfortable at night with the thoughtful arrangement of fans. Our room was on the second floor, with a gorgeous view overlooking mangrove trees and water. The owners helped us arrange a trip to the nearby bird sanctuary (extraordinary) and an all-day boat trip around the Rosario islands. The beach is a dream - lounge chairs and hammocks perfectly arranged for comfort and relaxation.

A rustic and laid back hotel with incredible food and wonderful rooms. Everything has been perfectly thought to make your stay an incredible experience. The shower under the trees was a highlight as was the amazing food & hospitality. The staff are super friendly and eager to help to make your stay a great one.
They cater for vegans and wheelchair ambulatory users which was super for us.
The private beach feels yours and having hammocks to hang in different places made the stay even better.
Paco is a great host always willing to help us and the ladies that help out are super kind and friendly. Make sure you eat at the hotel, the food is glorious and the juices amazing!

Loved our stay except the food. Lovely rooms and location. However, can only give 3/5 as it was recommended to us as catering to vegetarians, but was a daily struggle to get a decent meal :( If you eat fish you will be fine

The rooms were very dirty. The bathroom was technically outdoors which was not mentioned in the description. Last thing you want to see when using the shower is a giant spider on the showerhead. HARD PASS. The rooms were extremely dusty. There is no curtains, just open windows where everyone on the grounds can see and hear everything in your room so you have zero privacy. The mosquito net seem like it had never been washed. There were little holes in the net and gaps all over the edges of the room and we saw many geckos freely coming and going into the room. Since the only way to get air circulation in the No A/C rooms was to keep the windows open, the mosquito net was not very efficient as a result and it would fly off the bottom of the ground let mosquitoes and geckos in. Also, the location of the rooms in relation to the main road makes it sound like there is a helicopter constantly hovering over you. It was so loud (and not peaceful at all) that we were wondering if we were near a military base. Only to realize it was the echo of the cars on the road about 50 meters above the rooms. Not the tranquility you were hoping for staying near the ocean.

I read great reviews about this place and booked directly on their website. The currency looked wonky - COP240 rather than (I presumed) the US$240 it should've been (indeed the confirmation email I received said US$240). Communicated directly over email about transfer after the booking was made. Days before my trip I suddenly got an automated cancellation email. I emailed them directly and was told that there was a glitch on their website and they'd undercharged me and so they'd just gone ahead and cancelled my booking and to go ahead and try and book again and they'd offer me 10% off (presuming the room was still available this close to the travel dates). I was not very happy that I was being treated like this when it was a problem at their end. They then ignored my emails for four days before sending an apology email finally offering the room at the price listed in my confirmation email. By that point I had long since had to make alternate arrangements as it was only a couple of days before the booking and I said no. They responded "We thank you for your understanding." No I don't understand - their error meant they cancelled my reservation days out without contacting me first and the resolution was that I could try to rebook at a price I had never seen before, if still available! Glad others have had wonderful experiences, but I'd honestly triple check your reservation and hope there are no mistakes at their end.

The host is a really friendly person. Great rooms and surroundings. Al open air with a great view on the garden. Loved the animals that were freely walking around. As it is kind of isolated we had all our meals on the premises and we loved all of it. Only regretted that the waterfront on most of the beach had rocks so it was kind of difficult to play in the water with a toddler. I got quite some bruises and cuts on my legs :-p We loved the outdoor shower !

Our room was huge, light, airy and stylish. Coolest shower room ever, external, seemingly hovering over the jungle and beautiful appointed. They give you hammocks to put up in the room or on the beach where the water is calm and there’s plenty of shade. Staff are delightful, Paco, nephew of the owner - it is heartwarmingly a family business - is a joy to deal with. What a lovely man.
The food is extraordinary. You can taste the love.
There are lovely touches everywhere. You can tell the owner is an artist, in fact a photographer. It’s chic and bohemian and classy in a captivating way.
The honesty bar is a reflection of the owners and the clientele. If I come back to Colombia this will be the first place I book.

My son, his girlfriend and I just had 2 nights in Isla Baru but we picked the perfect place, staying at Playa Manglares. Safe, awesome vibe, good food, rustic and exotic accommodations on the water, private beach, helpful host. Paco arranged our transportation to the bird sanctuary, our boat & snorkelling tour of the islands and the ride back to Cartagena airport. Everything was smooth and chill especially outdoor dining. Loved it.

Cartagena, Colombia
Hi Anna, the property has private access to the beach, where you can gaze at the union of the mangrove estuary with the Caribbean sea. During the rainy months (August-December) the color of the sea is brown due to the natural sedimentation of the estuary.

They will set you up with snorkeling at the island. A boat will take you out to Isla Rosario. We weren't able to go, but I heard great things from the people who did!
