My husband and I stayed ten nights in Room #8 at the Aura del Mar from late January to early February, 2023. the room was a king bed with the jacuzzi/plunge pool on the balcony and the two couches/extra twin beds and was huge and very comfortable- including the mattress!

It was my second stay there and was even better than the first stay - which was about 12 years ago I think. I would describe the hotel as 'rustic luxury' and very Mexican in style and feel. Great views from all the rooms as they face the ocean. Great happy hours up at the lobby bar (that view!) and the staff are all great too. Check-in and out is a breeze and service at all levels was friendly and efficient.

Playa Madera is a great place to stay as you can walk to downtown and the pier so easily and also hike up over the hill to La Ropa if you want to go there for a meal or a beach day.

Playa Madera usually is calm and very swimmable, when we were there the waves were much bigger than normal but SO FUN- and the water was clear, clean and lovely and warm. We swam every single day we were there- the hotel beach club is small but we never really had an issue finding somewhere to sit. The hotel pool is also lovely -and the water slide as fast as I remember from last stay!

We did see a couple of small crocodiles at the place where the canal meets the ocean and heard from a couple on a sailboat anchored off Madera that they spotted a 6+ foot croc one day swimming past their boat at dusk. Do not worry too much about that as they avoid humans- but maybe stick to swimming during full daylight hours!

Madera area has many wonderful restaurants so finding a good place to eat is never a problem. And you have one of the best restaurants in Zihua right at the hotel, the Bistro del Mar. We had a couple of lunches there and it is always great and the service in the restaurant is about the best service we had the whole trip anywhere. Beach service was not quite as attentive but was still fine. Especially when Fortunato was working!

All in all, the Aura del Mar is a great boutique hotel in every way- the only downside for us is the high price, sadly. Everything was more expensive this year in Zihua and this hotel was no exception. We heard room prices went up $50 each this past year alone and it was already a pricy place to stay. But, that is just life today, I guess!

Nov/Dec 2020 was our 4th stay here at Aura del Mar, each time in a different suite, and we fall more in love than the time before. We love the location being on La Madera - easy walking to the beach, to El Centro and Calle Adelita. We also love having the option to order quality room service from Bistro del Mar. We adore the staff - everyone from the front desk/concierge to housekeeping to maintenance to pool/beach/restaurant servers. We love the authentic vibe, the lush garden grounds, the craftsmanship at every turn. We'll be back!
Covid protocol: 😷 Yes, they were following strict protocol. Every employee masked at all times, 30% occupancy when we stayed, QR code menus, social distancing and hand sanitizer abound.

We stayed 7 nights in January 2022. Communication prior to our stay was promp and very helpful. Transportation was arranged for us.

Hotel Aura Del Mar staff served us joyfully! Carlos met us at the airport, ice cold beers at the ready. Breakfast was included with our stay and it was not the continental type of the U.S. Each culinary offering was delicious and beautifully presented. Fresh flowers were placed on our bed everyday, the final touches to a room thoroughly cleaned. The stairs were many but husband and I enjoyed the exercise. On our first night, after the sun had set, there was a spectacular fireworks display over the bay. Maybe a Saturday thing?
To all the wait staff, Hector at the front desk, Carlos and every person who was happy to help us navigate the foreign language, currency and city streets, we cannot thank you enough. Zihua has earned a very special place in our hearts.

Our family of four visited Zihunatenejo and Aura Del Mar for the first time the week between Christmas a New Years. We stayed in the Noyoltzi Suite at the very top of the hotel. A spectacular view of the beach and water day and night. The suite had a huge, open air common space and then two large bedrooms with air conditioning and a smaller bedroom. Each bedroom had an en suite bathroom. It was super clean and a terrific place to hang out with a cocktail. The staff is excellent and always available for assistance. They made us all feel very welcome. In particular Hector, both Franciscos and Miguel. Carlos arranged for a snorkeling and fishing trip that were just wonderful. Better snorkeling than in Hawaii and a very successful fishing trip. The Bistro Del Mar was the place to be on New Years Eve. However, the service was always good as we had breakfast there every morning. A particular thank you to Fortunato, Juan Carlos and Claudeth at the restaurant.
The steps did not bother us and frankly were less than we were expecting given the reviews. Having been to several ecolodges the stairs at Aura Del Mar were a piece of cake. Our only request would be that the refridgerator in the suite be replaced. It did not cool particularly well. The freezer did a better job than the fridge. Nice to have plenty of filtered water to drink in our suite. We liked our visit to Aura Del Mar so much that we booked in again.

We went back and forth whether to stay here (playa madera) or somewhere on playa la ropa instead. While playa la ropa definitely had the better beach (longer, wider, softer, whiter sand), we were pleased with our choice to stay here in the end. Particularly since we were adjacent to the beach boardwalk and walking distance to the cute stores and restaurants in the downtown. I definitely think we had a more local, authentic, less touristy experience staying here in the heart of it all than if we had stayed on la ropa and there was no need to spend money on taxis back and forth. The resort itself is like stepping into the garden of eden. The rooms, grounds and landscaping are so well kept and while you will undoubtedly get a workout climbing 3 flights of steep stairs several times a day to get from your room to the pool, restaurant or beach, but the reward is that your room will have an impeccable elevated view of the bay to wake up to each morning. While the breakfast offering during the week is simple and adequate, we could not wait for the weekend breakfast buffet which was a spread unlike anything I have ever seen. The staff are all top notch from the front desk, to the bartender, waitstaff and housekeeping who provided nightly turn down service. We especially appreciated Carlos who arranged the airport transportation for us and our snorkeling tour on el Picante along with any other adventure your heart desire during your visit. Do visit Alicia in the spa for a relaxing massage. Small areas for improvement would be providing a holder in the shower to place soap, shampoo, conditioner etc. along with small size washcloths. While the King bed was comfy, the rooms with 2 beds had mattresses that were very hard and the sheets were thick and not as breathable as should be for the warm weather so not the best sleep quality in the double rooms. We will definitely be recommending Aura del Mar and the beautiful town of Zihua to our family and friends!

Carlos was our very friendly shuttle driver, a beautiful clean car, we didn't get offered a beer like other travelers which is fine but cold water would have been nice. $53 plus decent tip.

The hotel is a very clean, older, rustic building with many stairs but we were okay with that, it is on a steep hill. Lots of beautiful views areas to enjoy. Our room was a decent size but very noisy mostly because of the ladies next door, loud talkers and slammed the doors. I did not like that the shower had small open air screened wooden shutters that opened up to a corner in the outside stairwell. We propped it closed, no privacy if you want to shower together. Avoid room 104, the view is blocked by a wall. We were given breakfast coupons but not told BF is down by the beach so we wandered up to the desk looking.... Beautiful ocean view breakfast with lots of choices. Do not order the sausage omelet unless you like hotdog wieners, staff not overly friendly. If you order at the bar by desk, it's best to ask first what tequila they have. Shower was hard to regulate temp. I would say we wouldn't stay there again, but I do think our stay was just an off period.

This is a great Mexican hotel. This is Zihuatanejo, not Ixtalpa!
Lots of stairs down to the beach. You'll come home in better shape than when you left the states (about five flights if you are on the top floor).
The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Truly wonderful. Great views (we had an upper floor, but it looks like all of the ocean facing rooms had great views of the bay).
Very good air conditioning (for us, Zihua was hot at mid-day). Nice pool (good sized). Also lounge chairs on the beach.
The hotel has a restaurant and right next door on the beach is the highly rated Maderas Restaurant.
Great water pressure in the shower, plenty of hot water.
Nice little store right across the street for drinks, snacks, milk, etc.
The only downside was some road construction in front of the hotel, but we never heard any noise and it is supposed to be done by Christmas. Just dusty if you went down the road instead of the beach.

This was our first visit to Aura Del Mar, and we already can’t wait to come back!

We came here after a week at an AI in Ixtapa and the vibe here was very calm. There are a lot of stairs to contend with, but the place is so tastefully decorated with flowers, plants, pictures, statues, parrots, turtle, etc.. it was a pleasure to walk around.

The pool area was nice and we never had a problem getting a couple of chairs around there. There is also a dedicated beach area which we never used, but it appeared there were always chairs available there.

The room was also tastefully decorated and had a nice traditional Mexican feel to it. We had a room with a Jacuzzi tub on the balcony which we didn’t get a chance to use, but the balcony was huge, with a great view and large enough to choose sun or shade if you wish.

Front desk staff were great and really made us feel welcome and were very helpful in answering any questions.

A couple of area things:
Right across the street there is a small grocery store for snacks, beer, etc..
Down the hill from the street is a great little coffee shop – Café Caracol
Beachside, there are two massage tents, for which we paid 300 Pesos for 1 hour massage, a great price.
Zihua is such a walkable town, and you can explore by either taking the walkway beachside, or head out the front door and go along the canal. I really enjoyed discovering Zihua.

Thanks Aura Del Mar for a great stay – we’ll be back!

The folks who operate this hotel are all about customer service. Before and during my stay they responded to my questions very quickly, often within minutes. The hotel excels at cleanliness and customer service. If you are at all concerned about Covid then you want to stay here as they are on top of all issues related to Covid. They even have a lab that will come directly to the hotel to administer Covid tests so it is easy to get your documents for return to the United States.

We stayed 19 nights in Junior Suite #103. We did not get the package that includes breakfast at Bistro del Mar because we like to try other restaurants. Room was clean and quiet. Bed was very comfortable. View from our deck was incredible although rooms that are higher up can see more of the bay. Don't miss happy hour with Norberto in the lobby bar. Great view and fun place to meet other travelers. Miguel and Roxy at the front desk are fantastic. Although we didn't do any tours this time, Carlos always does a great job booking tours for you. Please be advised that there are no elevators and lots of stairs. Our room was about halfway so it was always a climb one way or the other which we don't mind.

Is this resort all inclusive?
Answer from Rissask

No, but it has a great onsite restaurant called the Brisas del Mar, and you can book rooms that also include breakfast. You would not want to stay all-inclusive in Zihua, and especially staying at this hotel, as there are so many wonderful places to eat in walking distance!

Our room did not have a screen. We slept with AC on as it was 32 degrees in January when we were there. At that time there were no bugs but I have seen posts of others in the area seeing small blackflies/mosquitoes. The only thing I saw on our balcony were ants and a few small cute geckos around the lights. We could still hear waves crashing on the beach with the sliding patio doors shut . Many other hotels are noisy - with sounds of the city. We generally heard nothing but the waves, a reason we will be returning to Aura Del Mar
