Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The perfect central location for our Dia de los Muertos visit to Oaxaca with our tour group. Las Mariposas is family owned, provides sparkling clean rooms and breakfast. We had great service to include helping with airport transportation .

The staff was very friendly and helpful . A continental breakfast was served to start the day. I enjoyed the beautiful gardens and two friendly old dogs around the entrance/courtyard. We would definitely stay here again.

First, remember this is a budget hotel. It has a great location and is very secure and safe (you have to buzz in and out through a metal gate). The patio/garden area is very pretty. I stayed here for two weeks while attending language school. Staff was friendly and pleasant although I really didn’t interact with them very much. My room was for two people but I think it would not have worked well for two people. It was fine for just me. It was very small and very sparse with just one small table and one chair. No air conditioning but I was able to leave my window open which was screened but didn’t really have a view. Bed would have been a little small for two people. Mattress a little hard. As per other reviews, breakfast is just coffee, bran flakes and bread/rolls/pastries. I did not eat there even once given so many other options for breakfast in the area. I did notice an occasional person or couple preparing other food for breakfast or dinner in the communal area. I always leave a thank you card and a cash tip in my room to thank the cleaning staff (my room was cleaned every day) so I was a little surprised to be mildly pressured when I paid my final bill to leave a tip on my credit card for the entire staff. I declined since I had already left one for the cleaning staff. I do recommend this hotel for a budget traveler since it really is a decent place in a great location for a value price.

Stayed 5 nights at the Hotel Las Mariposas. Here are a few of my thoughts. * Location - Superb. You’re located in the heart of everything with all the big ticket items such as Templo De Santo Domingo, Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca and the Zocalo all within walking distance. The central area of Oaxaca in general we found very gentrified with numerous bars and restaurants and we felt safe being in this area, even when walking at night. Apart from Monte alban we were able to do everything on foot with this as a our base. * Security - Good. They had iron gates which were locked 24/7 and you needed to be buzzed in by a attendant who was around near the reception area. * Room - Basic and clean. Only fans but because of the altitude of Oaxaca it was cool enough at night even when we visited in July. Showers had hot water which worked but did often take a bit of time to heat up. * Wifi - Good connectivity throughout the complex and decent speeds. Didn’t seem to drop out too much. * Staff - One of the real highlights of staying in this place. Friendly and helpful at every opportunity. * Breakfast - Fairly minimal but totally adequate. Fresh coffee, breads and cereal served in the communal courtyard. Overall for the price point I felt like this was a great option for a mid-range traveller. Additional tips - GYM - There is a large gym known as ‘black gimnasio’ located on Cosijoeza street which is the first street to the right that you see when exiting the hotel. It costs 70 mexican peso (weekdays) or 50 mexican pesos (weekend) for a casual workout. Probably a 200m walk. - Laundry - Closest one we found was just next to the above gym on Cosijoeza 208 and was called Lavanderia Silav. It cost 20 mexican peso a kilogram and did a 24 hour turn around service. - ATM - Closest is the HSBC which is located opposite the park, on the same street the hotel is on.

We loved our 1 week stay at Hotel Las Mariposas. They are a small family owned hotel located just a 10 minute walk from the Zócalo, close to Santo Domingo, and a half a block from the popular Parque El Llano. It’s also close to a variety of great coffee shops and restaurants. They have a variety of room options from small double rooms to large studios with kitchenettes. We stayed in one of each and despite the double being smaller, it was well thought out and nicely appointed to make our stay comfortable. There’s a variety of outdoor seating areas in garden settings, a larger patio area where people can gather for their daily coffee and continental breakfast that’s provided each morning, and a small sitting area with a TV. A shared kitchen is also provided for guest’s use. The rooms and grounds were spotless with special attention paid to being an eco-friendly hotel which we loved. The hotel has excellent Wifi and small safes are installed in the rooms. There is someone on duty 7x24 who was also responsible for front gate access. Lastly, but most importantly, the people working at Las Mariposas were amazing. Always friendly and helpful, they went out of their way to make you feel at home. A special shout-out to Cristel who provided us with outstanding customer service.

We enjoyed our stay in Las Mariposas during our recent visit to Oaxaca. This is a great economy hotel and very clean. The staff was friendly and we felt safe at all times. The location is within walking distance to most attractions in the city. They served breakfast in the courtyard which consisted of mainly bread/sweet bread, cereal, coffee and tea.

When I stopped by prior Sunday and made a reservation, I was not told that across the studio was heavy construction work going on . From 8 am til sometimes to 7:30 pm . Banging all day long and sometimes music with banging unable to enjoy sitting outside . On other side of the studio the window opens to the street which is noisy. The breakfast is a coffee and a slice of cake. Basically inexistant . The cleaning staff is wonderful . The ground are very nice and very clean . The location Central maybe too Central with because of on going noise which obviously is out of control from hotel perspective . But in wish they had told me about construction across The studio !

Dear Robertpierres: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at our hotel. We are truly sorry for the inconvenience you had during your stay. We always do everything possible to make feel our guests comfortable and safe, but as you mention, noise that comes from outside of our property is out of our control, however, when you told us about the problem (hours after your arrival), we offered different options of quieter studios, which you declined. Fortunately, the construction next to us is finishing during the next couple of weeks! About our inexistant breakfast, I only can say that even we aren´t a Bed & Breakfast, we offer coffee service in the mornings, without extra fee. Thank you again for providing feedback on your stay.

This hotel is in a great location for walking central historic area. There are many open patios for sitting outside & the community kitchen is a plus. It can be noisy...it’s more like a hostel vs a hotel...and there is limited help if you are not fluent in Spanish. The staff are very friendly & work hard to clean rooms & the property in general. Definitely good value for money. Next visit I will spend more money...a little...and have quiet & English speaking assistance.
