We loved our 1 week stay at Hotel Las Mariposas. They are a small family owned hotel located just a 10 minute walk from the Zócalo, close to Santo Domingo, and a half a block from the popular Parque El Llano. It’s also close to a variety of great coffee shops and restaurants.

They have a variety of room options from small double rooms to large studios with kitchenettes. We stayed in one of each and despite the double being smaller, it was well thought out and nicely appointed to make our stay comfortable. There’s a variety of outdoor seating areas in garden settings, a larger patio area where people can gather for their daily coffee and continental breakfast that’s provided each morning, and a small sitting area with a TV. A shared kitchen is also provided for guest’s use. The rooms and grounds were spotless with special attention paid to being an eco-friendly hotel which we loved. The hotel has excellent Wifi and small safes are installed in the rooms. There is someone on duty 7x24 who was also responsible for front gate access.

Lastly, but most importantly, the people working at Las Mariposas were amazing. Always friendly and helpful, they went out of their way to make you feel at home. A special shout-out to Cristel who provided us with outstanding customer service.

We enjoyed our stay in Las Mariposas during our recent visit to Oaxaca. This is a great economy hotel and very clean. The staff was friendly and we felt safe at all times. The location is within walking distance to most attractions in the city. They served breakfast in the courtyard which consisted of mainly bread/sweet bread, cereal, coffee and tea.

Las Mariposas is a great little hotel near the historic center of Oaxaca, walking distance to bars, restaurants, shops and attractions. Hotel is also located very close to colorful neighborhood of Jalatlaco. The hotel is located in cute little garden, rooms are nice and spacious and fast Wi-Fi. The hotel is gated which adds to security and you need to be buzzed in and out every time. Breakfast is very basic and there are several cute breakfast places nearby.

First, remember this is a budget hotel. It has a great location and is very secure and safe (you have to buzz in and out through a metal gate). The patio/garden area is very pretty. I stayed here for two weeks while attending language school. Staff was friendly and pleasant although I really didn’t interact with them very much. My room was for two people but I think it would not have worked well for two people. It was fine for just me. It was very small and very sparse with just one small table and one chair. No air conditioning but I was able to leave my window open which was screened but didn’t really have a view. Bed would have been a little small for two people. Mattress a little hard. As per other reviews, breakfast is just coffee, bran flakes and bread/rolls/pastries. I did not eat there even once given so many other options for breakfast in the area. I did notice an occasional person or couple preparing other food for breakfast or dinner in the communal area. I always leave a thank you card and a cash tip in my room to thank the cleaning staff (my room was cleaned every day) so I was a little surprised to be mildly pressured when I paid my final bill to leave a tip on my credit card for the entire staff. I declined since I had already left one for the cleaning staff. I do recommend this hotel for a budget traveler since it really is a decent place in a great location for a value price.

When I stopped by prior Sunday and made a reservation, I was not told that across the studio was heavy construction work going on . From 8 am til sometimes to 7:30 pm . Banging all day long and sometimes music with banging unable to enjoy sitting outside . On other side of the studio the window opens to the street which is noisy.
The breakfast is a coffee and a slice of cake. Basically inexistant .
The cleaning staff is wonderful .
The ground are very nice and very clean .
The location Central maybe too Central with because of on going noise which obviously is out of control from hotel perspective . But in wish they had told me about construction across
The studio !

Dear Robertpierres: Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at our hotel. We are truly sorry for the inconvenience you had during your stay. We always do everything possible to make feel our guests comfortable and safe, but as you mention, noise that comes from outside of our property is out of our control, however, when you told us about the problem (hours after your arrival), we offered different options of quieter studios, which you declined. Fortunately, the construction next to us is finishing during the next couple of weeks! About our inexistant breakfast, I only can say that even we aren´t a Bed & Breakfast, we offer coffee service in the mornings, without extra fee. Thank you again for providing feedback on your stay.

Las Mariposas is an absolutely charming small B&B! Quaint rooms surround an intimate courtyard, lush with plants & flowers. The traditional stone fountain in the center, complete with goldfish, softly fills the courtyard with the sound of water. A lovelier place to sit and read a book, I cannot think of. Each morning in the courtyard they served an excellent breakfast of fruit, pastries, cereal, yogurt and regional coffee with an undercurrent of chocolate. If mixing your own margarita in the late afternoon, the hosts shared ice from the open-air courtyard kitchen, and a laden lime tree grew in the interior courtyard. Guests were welcome to refill their water bottles anytime from the large water jugs in the kitchen. It's a casual, laid-back place where guests chatted with each other in the courtyard and the hosts were happy to share suggestions on where to go in Oaxaca (though their English was limited). If your tastes run to inexpensive places big on ambiance and low on pretensions, you'll feel right at home here. The rooms were nice and decorated with local style. There's no AC, but evenings in Oaxaca are quite comfortable and in the day you're mostly out exploring anyway. The courtyard was always comfortable, with shade and breeze. The beds were rather hard, seemingly the norm everywhere we went in Mexico, so consider your own need for plushness. Everything worked fine, was very clean, and there was plenty of hot water, etc. The location is great, an easy and enjoyable walk from everything in old Oaxaca City. We loved the museums of culture and contemporary art and our visits to nearby Mitla and Monte Alban. Chocolate row is astounding, and if you like the local arts & crafts, or mezcal, you're in for a bonanza. Many people come to Oaxaca to study spanish at one of the language schools, or to attend cooking school. Las Mariposas seems the perfect place for an extended stay. Several of the other guests were single American women spending two weeks studying Spanish -- Las Mariposas provided a secure and charming home away from home. We were there for half a week, and thoroughly enjoyed both Oaxaca City and Las Mariposas. Highly recommended; great bargain.

We found this small, charming hotel after getting weird vibes from some other places. Mme. Villareal and her office manager, Ms. Davila, were splendid to deal with, esp. considering they didn't speak English and I was armed only with phrasebook Spanish. Hotel is exactly as advertised, and more. Interior could not be more charming -- lush plantings, a beautiful fountain, many little details, nice ironwork -- I've posted pix on this site tho not with this review.

Location: a little hike from the Zocalo, but just fine for the energetic. A long walk from the big market or the public bus to Monte Alban, but close to north end restaurants and parks, convenient for going to Mitla.

Breakfast: Yogurt, cereal, fruit, some pastries (usu. went fast), hot chocolate naturally. Not luxurious, but satisfying and ample.

Rooms: Clean, sufficiently furnished, some charm. Love the iron gates, stucco, and enameled washbasins. Beds OK, not dreamy, not lumpy. The 2-bed unit for our kids was really neat. Wife was a little taken aback by non-private (no walls) bathroom area in ours.

Other guests: Diverse nationalities, nice, adventurous people in general. Be prepared for chitchat at breakfast.

Unexpected extras: the beautiful fountain; little welcome bottle of mezcal; helpful tips on transport from Mme. V and Lucia; neat reading area and collection of guidebooks; hotel will arrange transport to/from airport. Ice and limes available if you bring a bottle of mezcal back from town :)

What some might not like: Not a luxury hotel. No tubs in room, just shower. Typical Mexican no-washcloths. No pool. Street-side door is locked after dark, you have to ring bell to get in (someone is always there, but it feels awkward if stumbling in late). Distance from plaza means either a cab or a hike (we walked, no problem, but the old or overweight or just lazy might not like). Gated room doors don't provide complete sound privacy.

Value: Outstanding for the price in my opinion.

Overall: Loved it. I'd go back in a second, but I prefer the out-of-the-way and quaint to the well-trodden USA-resort-type hotel.

I actually just re-read your question, and admittedly misunderstood it. We flew in, so we relied on Roberto for transportation to and from the airport, and for a day trip. I'm not sure where the bus station might be, you'd be better off checking with the hotel.

Questions about room availability can only be answered by the facility. If it's available, your room and your stay will be comfortable, and perhaps even memorable.
