I was really looking forward to staying at this hotel...I just love the feel of something with history and this home was full of that. You feel old Merida when you stay at Hotel Casa de Balam. The location was perfect also, the staff was great particularly the gentleman who was helping us with our luggage...I forgot to take his... More

The hotel is near the main plaza and only a few minutes walk. It has a classic reception and atrium with fountain and a neat little pool. The rooms are very modern with huge beds and excellent bathroom and shower. A/C etc all fine and breakfast was really good

We stayed at this hotel 30+ years ago and found it just as lovely. We were there for 9 nights during the Day of the Dead. Very convenient to activities, restaurants, convenient store, etc. Note: The historical area has an activity each night of the week in a different plaza. The staff was very helpful, friendly, and accommodating. Rooms had... More

We stayed for a couple of days in this very well located, clean and comfortable hotel. The rooms were very well furnished and quiet and the front of house service was good. The large outdoor swimming pool was also a bonus. The one small niggle was that the breakfast was served in an adjacent restaurant (possibly not owned by the... More

My husband and two children (9 and 6) had the pleasure of staying at this colonial style hotel in the heart of Merida - a few steps away from everything! Our room was in the original colonial home portion of the building and was exactly to our taste. There is a newer attached part looking more like a typical hotel.... More

This is a beautiful colonial courtyard hotel, close to the center. We had a corner room with a king-sized bed. I'm sorry to say the bed was hard and torturous. But otherwise the room was large and comfortable. The bathroom was large with plenty of counter space. And it had a nice, big tub-shower. The courtyard was lovely and the... More

Casa del Balam is a nice hotel walking distance from all the great things going on around the square and neighborhoods where nightly activities occur. The staff are very friendly and helpful--we can't recommend them enough. The rooms are comfortable, but perhaps not 5 star; and don't plan to watch a lot of English tv. Its location and staff make... This was my 2nd visit to Merida and 1st time staying at casa del balam. On my last visit I stayed at another local hotel just up the street. I was not thrilled with the room quality. This time around I was very pleased. The rooms are decorated exactly how a boutique hotel in Merida should be. We stayed on... More

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Great location for wandering around Merida. Very welcoming staff. We arrived at 2am and was no problem checking in and getting straight into our room. Which was lovely. While being a very old hotel it is in excellent condition and very clean. Our room was the cheapest and still very spacious. We had 2 double beds... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Casa del Balam is one of the oldest and most distinguished hotels in Merida and the Yucatan Peninsula, it's also one of the few original Mexican Art Deco houses left in the city. The hotel was built in 1970 incorporating facets of the original home of Fernando Barbachano Peon, pioneer of Tourism in Mexico. His daughter, Ms. Carmen Barbachano Gomez Rul (who was also involved on the family business), left the original facade and selected the name of "Casa del Balam" (Mayan words for "house of the jaguar") to honor his father nickname "balam" due to his visionary sharp business mind. Ms. Barbachano was very devoted of the colonial period and decorated the house accordingly. Big wooden furniture, rocking chairs and wrought iron accessories were part of her fine selection. She had envisioned a place where every touch could softly spoke of the serene ambiance of the city, and where friends could be made instead of just mere clients. When looking at the amazing interior of this Casona and experiencing the warm specialized service of its personnel, one can easily understand that Ms. Barbachano did accomplish her desire of uniqueness, and in a very exquisite way! ... more   less
