2023 Iberostar Tucan
Playa del Carmen, Mexico

November 19 to Dec 17, 2023
With the exception of 2020, we have stayed at this resort every year since 2016.

MOST IMPORTANT FOR A FUN TRIP – DOWNLOAD THE APP
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE A ROOM NUMBER, LOG IN AS A GUEST

ROOMS:
Large, bright and airy. They are working hard to modernize all rooms. The hotel opened in 1997,and she is showing her age a bit, but nothing to dissuade from the comfort. Most rooms have 2 super double size beds ask for a King when you book. Also a TV, fridge, air conditioning, ceiling fan, no charge safe, iron, ironing board and shower (no tub). Do take a power bar if you have lots of electronics in case you are in one of the older rooms. Keep your doors closed and your curtain closed during the hottest parts of the day and you’re your room will stay cool. Patio doors have a safety lock at the for nighttime.

GROUNDS:
If you are a nature lover, this is a place for you! In the span between the rooms and the lobby, you have a jungle. Complete with all sorts of critters, iguana, flamingo, ducks, peacocks, coatimundi and agouti, that wander all over. Please DO NOT feed them, theymay become aggressive and it is sad to watch them take food out of an unsuspecting child’s hands. It is so joyful to have your morning coffee and a peahen walks up to look at you as if to say “good morning”. There are many cats as well. You will hear the Howler Monkeys before you see them. They go from tree to tree all across the resort. There are pools with fish and turtles at every corner and you will find larger turtles near the sport pool. There are some parrots in the daytime in the lobby . The gardeners work hard to keep the ground in tip top shape. Do bring repellent, as the mosquitoes like the jungle as much as I do. The floors are a beautiful marble, but please be careful, very slippery when it rains
There is a special section set aside for children with its own fenced off pool and play area

THE POOLS
The main pool is huge. For the most part, the pool is 5 feet deep, the shallow areas are near the towel hut and outside the Uxmal Restaurant. We love having lunch and watching the kids play games in the pool. There is a lovely small kiddie pool and a playground with sand just for them. There is a separate adults only pool bar and there is a sports pool as well. Omar, the pool concierge does his best to help out with seating – please see them if you can’t find a chair.

RESTAURANTS
There are two fully enclosed buffets and 5 al-a-carte (Japanese, Italian, Mediterranean, Smokehouse and Mexican – you need to make reservations for these). Check the apps for menus. Reservations can be made at the Concierge desk or on the app. Smokehouse and Japanese have a pre-selected menu. The food is carefully prepared and there is plenty of variety. They really work hard to provide for special needs (dietary, babies…) do not hesitate to ask. At lunch time, there is also an outdoor burger stand – no cover ups required! – with burgers, hotdogs, nachos, salad and fruit. Also, several times a week, they serve Paella and Mexican food near the beach.

BARS/DRINKS
There is no wait service at the beach or the pools. You can find ice cream and flavored water in a hut near the towels and there is a walk up bar near the beach. Bring your own reusable mugs/cups and straws. Remember – whatever they make with alcohol, can be made without alcohol!

ENTERTAINMENT:
There are many daily activities – on the beach, in the pool and at the gym. Tennis, horseshoes, rifle shooting, darts, volleyball, ping pong, billiards… check the app, or ask the very friendly Star Friends – shout out to the whole team! (Very enjoyable, even if you just watch!)
The Kids Club provides some wonderful fun and activities, and the opportunity to meet new friends. Saying hello to Gabi, Sarah, Paro, Vivi, Nicole and Karen. (Ages 3 – 12 and activities are divided by age)
Evening entertainment in the theatre rotates weekly and watch the app for entertainment in the lounges.

SUPPLIES
There are a few shops that carry a lot of necessities and souvenirs, as well as a photoshop. Also, about a 15 minute walk from the Hotel, there is a small shopping center, where you can purchase almost anything. Prices are reasonable and you can avoid the hubbub of town (like I do!), although many enjoy spending an afternoon in Playa Del Carmen (5th Avenue) about 5-10 minute drive) and taxi rates are reasonable ($5).

EXCURSIONS
Can be booked right at the resort. There are many folks who can help you choose. There is a desk in the lobby and a counter near the Uxmal Restaurant. Just ask a concierge if you need anything!

PEOPLE:
There are so many people who work so hard to make our trip enjoyable,

I am going to miss naming someone (please forgive me), but I wish to express appreciation to: Jessica, Alexi, Maria Jose, Vegonia, Gaspar, Adriana, Mario and Javier for their outstanding Club Concierge services

Star Friends
Entertainment Giovanni, Andy, Ivonne, Charley, Luis, Arlette, Mariel, Abraham, Frida, Alicia, Alandra, Martin, Beto, Angel, Jesus and Waldo.

Rebeca, our room steward did an excellent job of keeping the room clean and the fridge filled.

To hotel Concierge – Janaire, Seyme, Scanda, Luz, Yaheli, Yuremi, Jorge, Alfredo, Edgar and everybody at the reception concierge desks – no matter who you are, they are pleasant and will get you what you need. To the Cart drivers and Bellhops – Luis, Alex, Raul, Eliver, Eduardo and all.

The staff in the dining rooms work so hard to ensure you have what you need. Shout out especially to Apolonia (Chef), Jorge Roldsn, Mirna and Leticia in the morning Cozumel Buffet, Jesus at lunchtime in the Uxmal and Laureano and Francisco in the Cozumel Buffet in the evening. Thanks to all the others who took such good care of us as well.

All the bar staff, especially Lucely, Consuela, Micaela, Yadira, Mariela, Neicey, Shamady, Ricardo, Gamamel, Victorio, Manuel.
Special shout out to the gentleman who work endlessly to keep the pool clean and to the men who clean up the seaweed at the ocean every day.

Thank you to the Managers who make this place shine (literally at Christmas time) ; Anna, Thiago and Priscilla, who take the time out of their day to say “Hello, how are things” and listen when you tell them! Hello to Ariadna in Public Relations.

DON’T FORGET
Make sure you download the Iberostar App for the resort. For the most part, works wonderfully and provides lists of all activities, meals, evening shows, etc. I found myself taking part in a lot more activities, simply because I did not have to go looking at the board.
If you don’t know, please ask. Sometimes there might be a bit of a language barrier (I have taken to using Google translate – many of the staff are very chat friendly!), but if you make the time to find someone to help, your holiday will be much more enjoyable and if you are friendly, you can literally make someone’s day.

We have already booked our next visit! See you on Nov 14, 2024!

Spent the first week of January at the Iberostar Tucan and already looking forward to returning there next year.

Checking in and booking our 3 ala crate dinners took only 30 mins. We were in our room and at the beach within an hour off being dropped off by the airport shuttle.

The beach is maybe the nicest I’ve seen. The sand is clean, never to hot to walk on and plenty of chairs. The ocean is warm and shallow so you can feel safe about your kids venturing out in it and was a nice change from the pool.

The pool area is huge and very clean, with a convenient pool bar and buffet right close by so you’re never hungry or thirsty. Lots of games and entertainment throughout the day yet it can still be relaxing.

Our room was nice, nothing fancy but clean and close to everything. It came with a modern big screen TV so we could even stream Netflix movies from our phones at night as the English Channel selection is very limited. Just wish the room had queen beds instead of doubles as our kids at 10 yrs old are getting to big to share such a small bed with.

The food was always fantastic, easily the best I’ve had on any vacation. Read two recent reviews and if people are complaining I’d like to know what the heck they usually eat or how spoiled you are that you were disappointed. Most nights I left dinner upset I couldn’t eat more. Highly recommend the steak house and Japanese restaurants but the buffets quality was more than we could have asked for.

Service and friendliness of all the staff was incredible, our kids always felt safe and were well looked after during all the activities.

I can’t say enough about this resort and will definitely be back in 12 months.

Staff: Polite and friendly. They work long hours but always have time for a smile. Maintenance guys always painting, sweeping, jet washing & reparing. Keep the hotel and surrounding area looking good.
Food: Breakfast has everything you could want, pancakes, crepes, cereals, salads, fruit, meats, cooked english , pastries, bread, the lot. Lunch and dinner always plenty of choice but more 4 star than 5.
There are other restaurants book you need to book in advance. The Steak house was ok, the Mexican awful, the Italian was best.
Beach: Well set out, plenty of beds, very clean and waitress service. There are guys who constantly keep the beach clear of seaweed. Walk a few hundred yards right and you have a whole beach almost to yourself.
Location: love the variety of wildlife , it's very impressive apart from the monkeys which woke me up at 4am one day but you just embrace it.
Swimming pools: clean, plenty of beds and lots of games with the animation team, they do a great job
Rooms: our room was dated, furniture was old, bed sheets old fashioned and tv ood plus it didnt work. Fridge in the room gets replenished daily. Cleaners were great, room always spotless.
Concierge: biggest downside is these people constantly pestering us to join the Ibersostar membership. They called our room 4 times, 3 times just after 8am when we were still in bed. They post slips under the door offering $300 to spend around the hotel. This was the biggest downside
All in all we had a great holiday here and I would consider returning. I think 4* is a fair review and reflects the rooms, quality of food and the annoying concierge.
Great trip

Hotel complex is awesome, grounds amazing, all the staff really seem so passionate & happy in their work, whatever it is – gardener, manager, cleaner etc.

The Hotel has been built with such care, wonderful flora, fauna & habitat for all to admire. waterfalls were lovely. Agoutis, Coatis, Howler Monkeys, Peacocks, Parrots, Giant Tortoise, Iguanas, Flamingos.Walk from beach to main buffet restaurant & reception..
Our room was well decorated, spacious & cleaned to perfection. We had no problem with air con & fridge was always full.

The main buffet restaurants had great variety of dishes every day & well displayed.

At breakfast were 2 egg areas, cereals, pastries, cheese/ham, fruit, smoothies, bread, variety of vegetarian & Vegan food

Lunch & evening always variety of fish, pasta, Mexican, meat cakes, ‘themed’ area, burgers, chips
Beach restaurant served breakfast, into lunch & then a steak restaurant in the evening.

I have a Nut allergy & staff were happy to show me what I could/not eat, virtually all the food had clear labelling

Chefs were happy to help & if I couldn’t understand them, they would use the translation app on their phones.

The pools & surrounds very inviting & very clean.
The entertainment crew worked tirelessly arranging a variety of beach & pool games for all age groups,
There was always good evening entertainment

We had no probs getting a sun bed on the beach, but were up earlier than 11am!

Beach staff were out early with a beach cleaner picking up any seaweed

I would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking to spend some time in Playa del Carmen. The beach is clean with beautiful clear water and is shallow without a significant drop off throughout the entire swimming area. The staff at this hotel is excellent, they have an amazing entertainment team that keeps guests busy with a large number of daily games and activities. Food at the buffet was always excellent with great variety, even people who are picky eaters can find a good variety to suite their needs.

This facility has great food overall. Awesome wildlife jungle and the largest pool areas I have ever seen at a resort. So many different areas to swim. There is more than enough space for many to get cabanas, pool side chairs, and beach side chairs. The pool closes to the arts and crafts was not cleaned well, but the other pools were clean.

Great customer service in all areas. The entertainment was great the mexican night show as well as the kareoke night. We wish there were more adult activities. The shopping market is within walking distance where you can purchase all of your souvineers and more. Go to the brick and mortar stores before shopping the outside stands. Absolutely liked the whole environmental approach with Vero water and glass bottles instead of plastic water bottles.

The main issues: The mixed drinks are watery and terrible go for the shots of liquor (tequila blanco). Trust me the mixed drinks were the worst I've ever had in Cancun and I go every year sometimes twice to Cancun. The wine is average. NO AIR CONDITIONED ROOMS. Mexico is extremely hot, after enjoying the sun all day, a nice cool room is a MUST!. It was extremely difficult to sleep at night. Thank God we went in September. I can only image being here in June or July. We were told AC would be fixed in a day, we stayed for 5 days...no AC. Recommed requesting a room on the 1st floor, the 3rd floor was brutally warm at night and uncomfortable to sleep.

Overall will not revisit unless rooms are updated (outdated furniture and outdated outlets) and AC added. This resort was likely 5 star in 2000, but now it's definitely a 3 star.

upon arrival we are greeted by a smiley concierge rep. The man at concierge explained where the restaurants were and opening/ closing times, hotel facilities etc. the usual stuff.

Then we were told we were being given a special gift for our companion's birthday and because they want their guests to stay with them, a VIP breakfast and 75 dollars to spend at the hotel or a massage.

The next day is when it became apparent this hotel are willing to trade a positive customer experience for the chance they might get someone sign up to their 'not timeshare' scheme. I believe if we had been told that the 90 minutes of our time would actually be 3 hours of our time, I would have declined, they pay for your time with a 75 dollar voucher. The whole experience was stressful and upon declining to sign up, the sales manager tutted and sulked off, leaving us with a sales rep that also had now become a lot less friendly.

We found the food and drink to be average and while there was nothing inedible, there was also nothing that was consistently good.

Service was similar to the food, sometimes we had good service, with attentive waiters who were polite and helpful, but more often waiters that left us for 25 minutes without even offering water, then if they don't understand which drink you have asked for reply with an aggressive 'WHAT?', while scowling at you.

The alcohol included in the all-inclusive all taste similarly, and we actually found it difficult to differentiate between vodka, rum and tequila (this was the first and last drinks we ordered).

Me and my travelling companion's all got quite ill from eating at the buffet, we suspect it was the Salad, as this was they only food all three of us chose (we quickly learnt not to touch the salad or anything sitting in water).

The jungle area that connects both the tucan and quetzal is wonderful, with plenty of animals from howler monkeys to agouti, this was truly our favourite thing about the hotel.

The main pool is clean as is the beach, but If you want to get a sun lounger at either place you will need to leave early in the morning (around 6:30_7 am) and reserve them with your towels. Night time shows are repetitive.

We won't be staying at an iberostar resort again. I'm not sure If the sketchy sales pitch marred the rest of the stay, but this is the first time I have been to a hotel and honestly felt cheated. I wished I hadn't payed the amount I did for our stay considering the subpar food and service.

It's an eco resort surrounded by lush jungle. Howler monkey's talk you to sleep and greet you in the morning. Flamingoes enjoy part of the resort. Peacocks, iguanas, and agoutis roam freely. Beautiful water features greet you at the entrance. And Koi fish swim in between the boardwalk and restaurants.
Large pool beside the ocean with 2 zero entry locations. Small sand park and waterslides are available in the kids area. There's also an adult's only swim-up bar, hidden in a small cove with its own water feature.
White Sand Beach with torquoise water. Many fish (18") swim by your feet while you enjoy the warm ocean. Some days are windy, so body surfing is great.
Jet skis and parasailing are available and same with kayaks. There's also snorkelling not too far.
The resort is an eco resort so they are plastic bottle-less and the rooms electricity goes on stand by when no one is present in the room. Filtered water refill stations are available throughout.
The resort is located within a gated community (Playacar) which has stone streets and many shops that can be easily accessed by foot (we brought the kids on the walk, everything seemed very safe).

If you are looking for a resort, I recommend this resort. We had a great experience with Iberostar. Staff were friendly, food was fresh and fabulous every day, with lots of selection. Pool side and nightly entertainment were on point as well.
At night is was a bit noisy with the neighbouring hotels entertainment but it didn't bother our sleep.
Building 14 is dead smack in the middle. Not to far from the pool and beach, and not too far from the buffet, Mediterranean and Japanese restaurants.

Visited Iberostar Tucan from Jan 20th, 2020 for seven days.
Arrived late in the evening so our rooms were ready and check in was fast.
The rooms are quite dated beds cover blanket worn out and shabby looking. The bed sheets however were very clean and beds hard but comfortable. that's my opinion. There are no water bottles and works hard to make it a eco friendly resort. No straws either. there are watering stations on every floor of each complex (rooms). The grounds are beautiful, lots of animals on the grounds and in trees, lots of vegetation. They fumigate for mosquito's due to the dense vegetation. Shows at night are great but no different from other resorts I've been to. The Food is...food, not so great. Paella was pretty disappointing and does not compare to other Iberostar resorts I've been to in Punta Cana. The resort is big, lots of walking with uneven paths. Don't recommend this resort for anyone with mobility problems. The beach is awesome. Probably the best on the strip, white sand and clear water. Agitated at times. but good. Beach chairs need to be updated. The pool was super nice. lots of different pools for different levels. Service at the pool was awesome. The waitress who served us was so nice and made sure we always had something to drink. I would not come back to this Iberostar, again that is my opinion. but if your not fussy it's an ok place. I would rate this resort as a 3 1/2, not a 4 1/2 they advertise. Maybe years ago it was needs a little more work.

Visited here for a friend's birthday, and found it wholly worth the price. The service was so kind when we checked in, I was sure there was going to be a sales pitch, but there was not! The room was sparkling clean, a/c worked and fan worked a treat to remove the damp heat from the air. Beds (generously topped with three pillows) were perfect for me (I like a firmer mattress), and only one day was the shower a little tepid. Pool area was lovely, though the hot tub was chilly. Most days the pools were warmer than the "spa". Drinks, food, and service are good, nothing will wow your palate or blow your mind, but most of it is tasty and satisfying. If it's hot, I'd skip the Japanese restaurant, as the grills make it overwhelmingly hot (we were dripping with sweat and the food was just meh). Mare Nostrum and the Smokehouse topped my list for restaurants, but the buffet always featured a wide range of fresh, tasty options. We watched the show one night, which was underwhelming, but it might appeal to some. Great location, within long walking distance of Playa del Carmen, and cabs are prevalent everywhere (just confirm price and destination before you get in). Ocean front absolutely stunning and beach kept quite clean. Plenty of smokers/vapers around, but not particularly bothersome most of the time. Overall, a great value and fantastic experience!

Is this a good hotel for a 7 and 16 year old?
Answer from frosty00

Hi. My youngest is 7 and he loved it. The pool is big and the beach is very close so there's options there. Not sure about your 16 year old? If they enjoy sun bathing, swimming then I'm sure it'll be fine. There's 2 pool tables too so might keep them busy also. Could also consider a day trip or two to break it up?

Are their outlets beside bed? For sleep Apnea machines?

There are a very limited amount of outlets in the room. The room is quite small however. Depending on how long your cord is, it would probably reach from the lamp by the balcony.

What’s the difference between Tucan and Quetzal?
Answer from Npiddy

As far as I can tell absolutely nothing - they are simply different sides of the same hotel complex.

Both resorts share all amenities. The play area is lovely - I was able to spend a few hours in it last year with a friends 2 year old . The area is fenced in and they upgraded the sand area with a shading roof. The pool is very shallow and there are beach chairs around the pool. Very child friendly and safe. Hope you have a wonderful holiday.
