We have been to this hotel multiple times. Most of the time, there is no seaweed in the ocean, and very very little on the beach. However, this past June, and once before a few years ago, mats of seaweed are in the ocean and piles and piles are on the beach, while the workers are trying to collect and bury it. It's pretty much a losing battle. I don't think it depends on storms as much as it depends on currents. Google SEAS Forecast and go to their site to check out webcams all around the Carribean. The one in Playacar (nearest to the RIU) is the Playacar Palace webcam, but that has been inoperable (possibly intentionally) for a few months. You can look at the one is Akumal (a little south of Playacar) to see the current conditions. On the SEAS-FORECAST website, click webcams, and check the one in Akumal.
It is sad, since the Playacar beaches are some of the prettiest I have ever seen. Hopefully, currents change and the seaweed goes back out.
