We stayed in Tulum town but went here for breakfast, lunch and to hang out on the beach for a few days during our stay. This place is simply amazing. Although we did not stay at the hotel we felt very welcome both in the restaurant and at the beach. The beach and sunbeds are beautiful and very well taken...

Visited for January and kept coming back even though I was staying 2 blocks away. Fantastic food and drinks. Scenery is breathtaking and particularly for January there are a lot of off BPM parties. Recommend booking in advance to get good prices but defiantly worth the money. Tulum isn't for everyone but if you want to disconnect and enjoys great...

I love this place. I recently spent couple weeks in Tulum and this was our regular stop for breakfast or lunch and beach time as well as Saturday night for cocktails and music. The food is great! The service is really good. They added a fresh juice bar since our last visit which is a great addition to the property....

I really like Tulum and these rustic restaurants there. But Papaya Playa would be perfect if it improved a little their wine list and make better cocktails. The place itself is fantastic! Located straight on the beach. The service is ok until it gets too crowded.

Luxury boutique hotels are a dime a dozen in Tulum. But if you're looking for a real escape, a spiritual vision of luxury and a staff that wakes up thinking of your happiness then book Papaya Playa Project. Ask for Malena upon arrival and you'll immediately feel at home as she introduces the staff and guides you through the jungle...

I came to papaya playa project a little trepidatious based on some of the other reviews here but because of its inclusion in cool escapes and my general like of hotels in the design hotels collection I decided to book anyway. I was not at all disappointed. I have to admit that the amazing upgrade we were given probably helped...

I can imagine that people reading this review will be surprised by the 4* review with all the negatives i have but it really is a pretty good place and I might stay there again or recommend it to the right people. We had booked a "ocean front" cabana and were initially shown to a small and very simple hut...

You have the amazing turquoise ocean on one side and the green mangroves jungle on the other side of the resort. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Introducing, PAPAYA PLAYA, A DESIGN HOTELS™ PROJECT hitting Tulum, Mexico from December 6, 2011 to late 2012. Having sought far and wide for a place to create an authentic, nurturing experience, the 900 meter stretch of oceanfront paradise cocooned on the Caribbean coast of the Mayan Riviera was the perfect spot. Together with Emilio Heredia, owner of the existing Papaya Playa beach bungalow resort, Design Hotels™ is initiating the ultimate pop-up camp. Claus Sendlinger explains: “Our idea was to create a transitory, yet deeply culturally-rooted experience and we couldn’t have dreamed up a better place to make this happen. Capitalizing on the natural environment and multicultural character of Tulum, we quickly put together an international team of real visionaries, each enriching the experience with their own food, music, design or wellness concept. The enthusiasm and creative energy of everyone involved enabled us to renovate the camp and put together a holistic program within a very short period of time.” So come December, the authentic-pleasure seekers have a new raw-luxe camp they can sink and rub their feet into. Eighty-five cabañas have been renovated by the Design Hotels™ creative team. Integrating local materials and building techniques, they encourage its residents to soak in the warmth of the elements, both physically and mentally. The separation between man and nature diminishes in these rustic spaces while the perception of small indulgences – like high thread count sheets, flowing mosquito nets and thick towels – is heightened. The ultimate luxury in most of the cabañas, is the private porch, where hammocks gently swing guests into sync with Tulum’s laid-back rhythm. ... more   less
