I stayed in the Shippen, which I very much enjoyed for its beautiful exposed beams and very comfortable furniture and decor. The area itself is beautiful, and the surrounds are certainly worth it.

The space was cleaned to a very high standard, and the bedroom I stayed in was furnished with a beautiful and EXTREMELY old bed! I felt like a king.

I stayed for under a week, and found the cottage very well equipped and wonderfully spacious for myself.

I found it a perfect place to relax on my own time, and considered it somewhat of a retreat.

Overall, a beautiful cottage that is well looked after and lovely to stay in.

We have just got back from the most relaxing and enjoyable week's stay at The Hayloft, a beautiful one-storey light and bright character cottage, in the grounds of Norburton Hall, with views out to the rolling hills due to well placed Velux windows which along with the wide stable door gave us a very welcome breeze during the hot weather. We had a private balcony from which to enjoy drinks and a shared very pretty and spacious gravelled courtyard with plenty of seating. Our hosts Claire and Richard were so welcoming, available to check things with or to just chat about the history of Norburton Hall and what they are still discovering about it, which was fascinating. We knew when we booked that the grounds were secure so were happy to take our Greyhound, and when we arrived and saw just how secure he would be we couldn't be happier. Even our courtyard was gated. He also made great friends with Claire and Richard's two very friendly dogs. We noticed a comment from a previous guest about a couple of things including towels! There is an excellent and easy to use washer dryer in the cottage which we used for a midweek wash, and a dishwasher, plus laundry liquid and dishwasher tablets provided. We had everything we needed for the week and soon made ourselves at home. We visited Hive beach, Charmouth and West Bexington and of course the village pubs, and popped into Bridport to shop but otherwise very happy to relax at Norburton. We will definitely be returning to this gem.

My husband and I plus a friend stayed for one night in the Shippen. We were down for a book launch at Norburton Hall and we absolutely loved being there. The cottage was sparklingly clean and tidy, the level of decoration and comfort was second to none, the kitchen very well designed and laid out, the lounge delightful and inviting and our bed so incredibly comfortable that we didn't want to get up in the morning! Norburton Hall and its grounds are stunningly beautiful. We only stayed for 24 hours, but we've all said we want to come back. Claire and Richard are wonderful hosts and we can heartily recommend staying here. We can't wait to come back!

A beautiful & serene setting with the obvious history of the main house being so evident in its elegance. The cottage was fine for the 5 nights we stayed. Essential items for a self catering cottage were supplied. In saying this possibly more than a small bath towel, hand towel and flannel each was not really adequate. The outside area was quite limited and not really suitable to spend more than a short time sitting outside. We felt that perhaps the cottage wasn’t as clean as it should have been, an olive stone was found in the bathroom sink (under the stopper) the shower was covered in lime scale and the windows were dirty. Also, to note, ensure the nails are all knocked down in the living/ kitchen area wooden floor as my husband just averted a nasty accident by seeing one sticking up as he walked in. There is also a constant droning noise under the bedroom floor which meant we had to use ear plugs. I don’t know what caused this - a motor running perhaps? The area of Burton Bradstock, West Bay etc. is lovely and having visited quite a few times previously it didn’t disappoint and the sun shone which was a real bonus! To conclude, the cottage is adequate if taking into account the points noted above, and with some care and consideration could be a really nice holiday stay and worth the money.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. I see that Chris has also left a review. I’m glad you found the Hayloft comfortable and the beautiful surroundings of Norburton and the village charming. We were pleased to see you enjoying the grounds which offer five acres for guests to explore. We hire the services of a reputable professional cleaning company, which performs to a high standard, and are raising your concerns with them to ensure that our exacting expectations continue to be met. The new, quality bath, hand and face towels are all of a normal size and a full set is provided for each guest. Thank you for letting us know a nail was coming loose; we would have happily amended this for you if we had been made aware at the time. As this can happen with old floorboards we will ensure to check all nails are secured between bookings.

Just returned home from here and I must say how easy it is for some to stretch the truth. Stayed in the Hayloft, formerley the Stables I believe. Described as luxurious on their Web page, nothing could be further than the truth.
This is as basic as you can get, dated, dirty, nails sticking up from the floor and a kitchen that needs an update. All the skylight windows were dirty and are really the only ones you can see anything from unless you are a midget then perhaps the two tiny ones in the bedroom would be ok
Had to clean the skylighs myself to see anything at all. Yes the hall is amazing and cleary beautiful, so to the area but Hayloft leaves a lot to be desired especially at this price. Will not be going back

Thank you, Chris, for reviewing your stay with us alongside your partner's. We always strive to maintain high standards and provide our guests with comfortable and clean accommodation and so are sorry to learn this did not meet your expectations. We continue to invest in the ongoing improvements of the cottages, updating and refreshing furnishings, fixtures and appliances. Plans for renovating the Hayloft's kitchen have been in the works since the beginning of the year but were disrupted by the further impact of Covid. With life underway again we are hoping to put the refurbishment plans back into action soon. The bedroom windows - made up of four conjoining windows and skylights - take up the majority of the wall/eves, and were designed within the parameters of the historic building and conservation area. We have addressed your concerns regarding hygiene in your partner's review, and are acting to ensure those concerns are met. As applies to all our guests, we ask that any grievances are raised with us at the time as we will always aim to respond to and amend the issue immediately.

We enjoyed a very happy stay in the Hayloft, so full of character and in a delightful setting. We love to walk and it was perfectly placed for both coast and countryside. The cottage was very clean, well-equipped and comfortable (especially the bed!) and the owners couldn't have been more helpful. We'd love to come back one day!

More like a hotel than a B&B.

Accommodation is upscale, the best we've stayed in by a 'mile' in this part of Dorset.

Our suite was large with an excellent bathroom with roll top bath, in addition to a large shower.

Great place to relax anytime. It will be absolutely stunning in summer, set within its green estate.

I am finding it difficult to post this, as I don't want to see this Hotel over run by hoardes of customers other than us, but I expect within 12 months time you will not be able to turn up any time without booking months in advance at this new hotel; although I understand it's been operating now for 18 months.

Having struggled over the years to find a superior place to stay when we visit Dorset, this has be the reward for hours of fruitless internet searching. I only stubbled on it through the local village (Burton Bradstock) website; within which the Norburton Hall website seems to have been buried like a little diamond.

We ate just down the road at the Anchor Inn. My wife had a Lobster (poor thing) and I had a Fillet steak and instead of Tiger Prawns with it ,(Surt n Turf) I asked for Scallops in their place.
Better than the anything i've eaten in London in a very long time.

On another night we ate at the Three Horseshoes, which was even closer to Norburton Hall (walking distance).
Unless you've had your legs blown off, (in which case it may prove a bit of a 'hobble') you have two excellent restaurants a mere stones throw away. We had a homemade Steak and Kidney pie. Wholesome and honest fare!

Gawd knows what the other reviewers where doing to miss these to cracking eateries? (:¬)

Finally don't expect to get a mobile signal along the Dorset coastline for miles and miles, its a technology wilderness down there. As for broadband, in Dorset a pigeon in a catapult travels faster.

OoERR...or should I say OoARR?

We were visiting Burton Bradstock to attend a wedding and found Norburton Hall on its lovely website. It lived up to all expectations. Our room, the Chesil Room, was the smallest but was beautiful with flatscreen TV, a lovely view over the gardens, a very comfortable bed and an electronic shower. The breakfasts were divine and included the nicest mushrooms I have ever tasted. The grounds of the B&B are beautiful and the hosts are friendly and helpful. Book yourself in as a treat!

The good:
Great geographical location and in a quiet part of the village.
10 minute walk to two excellent pubs that also serve good food, the Anchor and Three Horseshoes. A 20 minute walk through the back lanes takes you to the award winning Hive Beach Café that does fabulous food. We noticed it welcomes children, as did both the pubs.

You can stroll to the beach in 20 minutes where you can go either right or left and find great views and walks.

Excellent central heating.

Attractive grounds.

Spacious with good storage facilities though only a small freezer section at top of fridge so not what I would call a true fridge-freezer if you are thinking of bringing frozen stuff be careful as it will hold very little.

Owners very friendly and willing.

The not so good:

Dairy Cottage is attached like an annex to the kitchen and utility room of the main Norburton Hall where the B&B guests stay and the owners live It is separated by the stairs and hallway with internal doors either side. In the mornings the smell of fried food was strong. The owner, Karen, told us about this after we arrived and suggested keeping the hall door closed but the smell was quite pervasive upstairs.

The other downside of being next door to the Norburton Hall kitchen was that on the occasions where it was dry or sunny it would have been nice to sit outside, however the cottage patio doors open out onto a yard which is essentially the Hall’s kitchen backyard. This meant that to our right and left we had clothes-lines. Whilst we were there the one nearest to us used each day it was dry weather.

The mattress sags and the duvet cover and pillow cases were made of polyester/cotton though the bottom sheet was all cotton. There was no top-sheet , just the duvet and it was was polyester too. On mild nights it is nice to also have a sheet. Towels appeared well worn and quite hard. It’s a personal thing I know but at this price I look for good pillows, all cotton bed linen and soft towels.

Overall as a self-catering proposition we found it lacking, particularly given the price tag. From what we saw it would seem the B&B side of things is a better alternative than Dairy Cottage.

Firstly we would like to thank the reviewer for the positive comments they have made, particularly regarding how helpful and willing we are as hosts. We always strive to make all our guests’ stays special. It is especially disappointing for us that none of the issues were brought to our attention at the time as we would gladly have done all we could to resolve them and to ensure our guests had nothing less than an excellent stay. Please be assured that all of our bedding is 100% cotton and I can only think that there was confusion about the label which shows that some appliqué trim contains polyester. Our towels are from Marks and Spencer and are regularly replaced. If we are made aware of any dissatisfaction with the quality we never hesitate to provide replacements. We are very concerned about the comfort of the mattress, which is pocket sprung, and we are currently looking into why it may have appeared to sag. We are also investigating to see why the smell of breakfast being cooked was so noticeable in the Dairy Cottage. We cook breakfasts in an Aga which generally seals in most of the cooking aromas. Washing lines are provided for our self catering guests as well as our own use. We are conscious that the outlook from the cottage could be more scenic and to that end have planted some fruit trees which will, in time, screen the rotary line. We regularly dry our washing outdoors in line will our policy of minimising the environmental impact of our business and you may also have noticed our fruit garden, compost bins (also for use by guests) and the chicken run (a popular feature with families) in the photos which supply fresh home produced fare for our breakfasts. However if any guest is unhappy about this I am happy to dry laundry indoors or to assist in moving the patio chairs and table to a more favourable spot as our guests are free to use all of our 6 acres of grounds.

My fiancé booked for us to stay at Norburton Hall as a treat for my 30th birthday! My first visit to Dorset and what a visit it was. Karen and Dave gave us a very warm welcome and couldn't have don't more to make us enjoy our visit! Our accommodation was spectacular, a four poster bed and a free standing bath in a very large bathroom, all in the lovely grounds of the estate. Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing break! Looking forward to our next stay there.
