Douglas Fir Resort & Chaets has garnered a reputation for its quaint, family-friendly atmosphere and scenic location with convenient town access. However, guests frequently note that the value is diminished by outdated rooms, lackluster cleanliness, and amenities that often require maintenance. While some travelers appreciate the helpful staff and free bus passes, others have encountered service issues. The waterpark is a highlight, though experiences with other amenities like hot tubs can be hit or miss.

The good: Staff were wonderful, the beds were comfortable, and the rooms were a great size. The outdoor hot tubs were awesome! BBQ area was enclosed so that was nice to keep the wind out while cooking.

The bad: When we arrived and were walking to our room there was a bucket in the hallway catching water that was dripping from the ceiling and already made a mark on the carpet. The sauna was broken in the pool area. The pool needs to be cleaned. The dishwasher in our room wasn't working and just kept beeping. Maintenance came to look at it and after about 2 minutes said it was all good and then right after he left it started beeping again and wasn't working. Mentioned it again on checkout so hopefully they get it fixed.

Based on how much this place costs a night, you may want to look around.

we stayed here this past january. overall, i’d say we were disappointed. the cost of a suite feels very expensive for what you get. the units are very old and very dated, which is our principal frustration. you can pay less to get considerably more elsewhere (especially canmore). the waterslide is a huge plus if you have kids (ours absolutely loved it...), but i find it hard to imagine we’d return even with that.

i don’t have concerns with the staff or location. if the owners invested in the facilities, i think it would help this resort distinguish itself in a crowded market of proprieties whose best days are behind them.

We stayed for two nights in a loft room. It is quite large, has full kitchen, living room with murphy bed, wood burning fire place with free wood supplied, and a full bathroom on this level. Upstairs in the loft has two twin beds and a half bathroom. The room was clean (other than some dust) but could use some upgrades for sure. There was a small bundle of wood in the room and if you need more there is a large pile in the entrance of the underground parking.

The waterpark is for sure the perk of of the place. There are two large waterslides, not very fast but still fun. The pool at the bottom of the slides is not for swimming, it is quite small. There is an indoor hot tub beside the waterslide, and a small toddler pool. There is also an outdoor hot tub with a very pretty view of the mountains. Below the lobby there is another pool and hot tub, but it is currently closed. There is also an indoor play place but it is closed right now too. The change room has lockers, they take a quarter.

There are some nice wood carvings outside, the place has potential but needs some reno's.

This resort is completely outdated, they did not change our sheets or clean our room once during our stay, and when my pregnant fiancé phoned about getting towels, the manager verbally harassed her about a pool time that we missed by accident and hung up on her. When I confronted them about this incident they they responded with "we are no impressed with you". The Douglas fir doesn't Seem to care about there guests from My experience. I will not be staying here again.

i would like to highlight few issues encountered during our stay at your resort and myself and my wife are really upset with the level of services provided at this resort.

1: On the day of arrival, we were assigned a room which had a wearied smell. at night breathing through this smell was not pleasant. We thought it would go away but it prevailed continuously throughout our stay.

2: The cooking facilities especially the utensils were not cleaned properly when we arrived. Particularly, the pan for cooking had food stuck on the edge and was not cleaned.

3; During our stay we had to call the maintenance person twice. one occasion the TV did not work. The remote control that was in the room was not meant for the TV in the sitting room. The patio doors were very hard to operate. The net patio door never opened or closed and we had to leave it open during our stay as the patio rails were out of alignment.

4: Due to continuous smell in the room and the bathroom drain that was blocked we did not feel comfortable eating/cooking in the chalet. We chose this property with a view that we would be able to cook and have decent meals in the chalet rather than going out as my wife being diabetic and had a knee injury.

5; There were no Laundry facilities at the resort and we were advised to go elsewhere.

6. There used to be a pub/bar in the resort but this was shut down. (no Restaurant facilities for dining)

7. A day before we were to depart, the adjoining occupant of the chalet told us that there is a leak from pipes ( Water or Sewerage??) and they have sought alternate accommodation in the resort. Just as ours and theirs had a joint wall, we confirmed where the smell was coming from which ruined the whole stay of ours.

On checkout, i mentioned these issues to the reception staff who was not keen to respond. I left a message with with him for someone to contact me in order to discuss these issues. So far i have not received any email or a phone call from the resort. The property advertises a great deal of pleasant stay for customers and charges premium rates. What we have paid is not justified by the level of service at the property.

The furniture was ripped, worn, and very outdated. The mattress cover got pulled back after the second night and had over 5+ yellowish stains 🤢
The carpet… it had salt hardening from shoe wear, it was dirty and made us all wear our shoes inside to feel like we wouldn’t ‘catch anything’. The rooms have a ‘kitchen’ but the oven stove top only had ONE burner working between TWO condos to feed a breakfast to 6 people - my parents had another condo and same there. Next, the kitchen utensils were so worn and dirty….We had to wash everything before using it.
We have been coming for here on and off for 20 yrs - we will never book again until some SERIOUS hygienic renos are completed. I cant understand how they are running a ‘hospitality’ business from the disgusting bedding/furniture and lack of upkeep. Honestly, the place made my skin crawl.
Would be, and could be, an amazing lodging hotel with the amenities for kiddos and the mountainside location … did the owners just give up!? It’s a hand on head that they are allowed to be open. So disgusting.

What really left a bad taste in my mouth was when I checked in. The desk clerk asked me the ages of my kids (17, 15, and 13). I was charged an extra $20/night because my 17 year old is considered an Adult at Douglas Fir. My very first interaction with the hotel, and I was being upcharged an extra $20/night. Now $20 isn't a big deal, but it felt like a bait and switch tactic. I really wanted to cancel my reservation, on principle alone. They said the "age of adult (16+)" and the "charge ($20/night for extra adults)" was buried in their terms and conditions, but at the time of checking in, I had no choice to back out of my reservation without being charged a 1-night penalty. It was a very negative first impression. If their online reservation system had asked me the ages of my kids at the time of booking, and then quoted a price, I'd have still made the reservation. But it felt so greasy having the extra $20/night tacked on at check-in.

I could also make comments on the datedness and declining maintenance of the property, but the bulk of the other recent reviews have focused on that. So I'll just mention the $20/night surprise upcharge at check-in, and leave it at that.

On the bright side, this hotel is in beautiful Banff and there aren't many places as amazing as Banff. Also, this is one of the few hotels that can accommodate a larger family such as mine with 2 adults and 3 kids.

We stayed here for 2 nights this weekend. We have been coming to this resort for the past 5 years. Our kids love the water slides, and enjoy staying in the chalets.
We found the resort had a lack of caring for cleanliness throughout. The pool change room floors were disgusting, with hair and garbage everywhere. They clearly weren’t cleaning the room, as the same mess was on the floor all 3 days we used to the pool facilities. Bathroom stalls were out of order, clocks off of the walls, steam room not operational, etc.
This whole complex is in dire need of a renovation. It has looked the same since I started coming here as a kid in the 1990’s. The chalet had dirty dishes in the kitchen upon our arrival. There were no pots and pans, and only one flimsy garbage bag for us to use. The beds need to be changed. There were big divots in the mattresses, and the bedspreads are just the nasty old style where they ‘rarely’ get cleaned. For the price that we pay to stay here, the experience is disappointing. If it wasn’t for our kids that enjoy the slides, we wouldn’t be booking here. This place is in dire need of a 6-8MIL renovation. I get that there is a lack of staff, and we could maybe overlook the dated decor, but if you can’t hire people to keep the property clean and hygienic, that’s where we have issues. It was gross!

I had called this resort before we left the city to confirm that they would take my visa debit for the room and they had confirmed that they would indeed use my debit visa but they would just charge my card for everything instead of a pre authorization. I confirmed it again with them and they said absolutely they would do this and to come out. We arrived at the resort and once the male working behind the counter seen that my boyfriend is Indigenous he changed his mind and said that he would not honour what was said to me when we called. This is extremely upsetting and I will be spreading this on all sites and every person I know going to Banff. We found a much higher star resort that was willing to accommodate the visa debit, it’s not like we didn’t have the money. I’m extremely disappointed in this resort and I feel extremely sorry for the lady he was training.

Our first impression of this resort was the unfriendly borderline RUDE front desk staff who checked us in. When we ask a question, don't reply "It's on the sign". Just answer the question. The unit we reserved was not cleaned properly, things were broken and didn't work properly. The unit looked like it hadn't seen a renovation since it was built. For $400+ a night I didn't expect to feel like I spent my money on a dump. The value was good for the size or the unit, but somebody needs to start budgeting some money to update the property. You had to reef on the shower faucet it to turn on, the toilets weren't cleaned, the bathroom door lock didn't work, the floors were dirty, the dining table was broken. I could go on. If you're looking for value, this is your place. Our unit could sleep a lot of people. If you're wanting to stay someone clean and even somewhat modern, keep looking. Feels like a hotel from 1995.

we stayed there about 15 years ago and it hasn't change as of last year so I doubt there be any renovation but they are in need of one. It's in a nice location a little bit away from the town and has some nice walking trails. If you would something a little upscale you may be a bit disappointed here.

We had no problem at all with the wifi whilst at the resort. When in our room we had wifi access all the time, no complaints at all.

You are correct. Douglas Fir is getting a little worn and the sofa bed is really not super comfortable as the mattress seems very well used as well. However we keep going back because of the wood burning fireplace and the open area. The suite we stayed at in Tunnel Mountain resort had a separate bedroom and we preferred the open area in Douglas Fir. It really depends what you prefer. I would say that both are very comparable.

if they do, depending what their charge is, you might be better off buying one (a cheap strap to the chair one) as opposed to paying their daily fee for it.
