I booked this room as a last resort when nothing else was available. It is important to know what you are getting yourself into.

This is a very old building. The operator is an eccentric and really funny lady who was very pleasant to us, contrary to the reviews I have read. While I find it very important to support small independent businesses, it is also important to know a few details about the facility.

1) The building is extremely old. I am VERY concerned about the safety of the building as it is in poor repair. The basement where my room was located had very small windows, not in line with fire codes.

2) The photos of the rooms on various booking sites do not accurately depict the space.

3) The people that stay at this location really contribute to the situation by not respecting the property- there is damage caused by inconsiderate guests.

4) Linens are very old and stained. The operator was kind enough to replace some urine and blood stained sheets in our room, claiming it was from a rusted out wash machine. I understand things are expensive, but proper laundering facilities are required when you operate a hostel or hotel. If booking here, I suggest bringing your own linens.

5) The washroom facilities are (I hate to say it) absolutely disgusting. The showers are exceptionally small and water spills all over the main washroom area. As a result, guests are expected to mop up after themselves. Toilet areas have old doors with gaps, rust is to be seen everywhere. The urinal faces the kitchen and the door is left open. There is no privacy here.

The location of this hostel is great as it is very close to amenities.

Overall, I think if you know what you are booking, it is fine. As a person who has never stayed in a hostel though , I found it pretty bad. I wanted so desperately to praise the operators for their facility as the Lady that runs it is lovely, however, the place needs a lot of work.

My travel buddy worked in various hostels in Europe and referred to the condition of this place as a "budget prison cell".

Again, love the idea of supporting small business. Wish I could compliment them on something. Sadly, this is the worst facility I have ever stayed at due to cleanliness and condition.

If you like being shouted at by the owner, shooed out of common areas, and sleeping covered in animal fur, this may be the hostel for you. Otherwise, its largely an exercise in staying at Fawlty Towers, with one woman playing both Basil and Sybil.

I have no idea what could have happened before to cause her to put signs in the rooms asking people to refrain from drink, drugs, and human trafficking.

Toilets are OK condition, but you rather hoped you were using when they were about to be cleaned, rather than just after. No obvious evidence of breakfast or WiFi. Parking is on street, and only available outside working hours (so you can't leave a car out front all week day while you go to the beach)

If you have to stay in Kelowna, and all others are full, you may well consider this place. But I certainly wouldn't use it as a first choice.

I was in Kelowna for my first visit, was looking for somewhere cheap and right in downtown. It was an excellent location, you can find grocery and bus stop very close by!!! around 10 mins walk to all the restaurants and café, it is located on the main street: Bernard Avenue. Room is not very updated but it is absolutely clean, bathroom is updated but all you have to share... wifi connection is fair!!! Absolutely will stay there again and thank you Maggie for her friendly service! :)

My boyfriend and I stayed in the double bed room in October for 2 nights. The lady that runs this hostel is pretty nice to us. We had looked at their website prior to making a phone reservation. We were not really expecting much for breakfast since they said on the website, free DIY pancake breakfast and coffee/tea. But when we woke up the next day, we were surprised to find eggs (1 egg each), 2 apples and some slices of bread in the dining room for us. It feels very comforting actually to find this all prepared for us in the morning. We were thinking of walking over to Safeway since it was so close... but after we saw the free food, we got a bit lazy and just made some pancakes and made coffee and all the extra food Maggie had given us. :)

Our bedroom was on first floor, pretty close to the men's washroom but a bit far from the womens'. But it was only up one flight of stairs so it wasn't too bad. It's pretty safe at this place because the hostel uses a number key entry. Maggie says she changes the number every week.

I would recommend this hostel to anyone that just want a place to sleep comfortably and have food to eat the next morning, all for a super good deal.

I was very impressed and would recommend this hostel. The location is fantastic, a short walk to the waterfront located on the main street to downtown Kelowna. My room and facilities were extremley clean and well maintained. The owner seemed to really care about making your visit memorable. I was an alone traveller and felt safe and comfortable staying here.

Hello my traveling friends,
I am an international traveling photographer. The most recent trip was to Cuba a couple of weeks ago. You can find my reviews on this and photography related travel sites.

After spending the better part of this year on the road, I found my bank account was depleting quite rapidly. So instead of spending big bucks for a place in Kelowna, I resorted to this hostel.

Now let it be known that it has been since the tender age of 15-16 that I've stepped into one these establishments. Heed this review; there are better places to stay.

Firstly, I was referred to this place by another hostel because I use cash to travel. I have a credit card, but only use it to book places and then pay cash.

Upon my arrival here, I was greeted by the owner with a look that could kill. Of course I was exhausted and looked the same. Her comments were... Can I help you? Now, albeit that these words are a common greeting, but the tone used by this Chinese woman was discriminatory and demeaning.

She asked me to sign the register, which was a simple form. I was explaining to her, in front of some other Chinese guests that I only use cash and had no credit card. She immediately stopped me from completing the register.

When I produced a passport, cash, and a debit card, her tone changed completely. Sheesh! This is a freggin hostel, not a five star hotel!

OK, so as a world traveler, I have come to reduce expectations and simply enjoy the ride. But in this case, the ride is a one way ticket to hell! Let me explain...

This is a hostel. The owner is half way off the edge. She complained about overhead and being overworked. She is a cash grabbing person who really has no vested interest in the guests... unless they have cash.

At first I fell for what appeared to be a genuine concern for individuals. It took a few days here for me to get my head out of the clouds and plant my feet firmly on the ground.

I was privy to overhear a conversation between some Hindu guests and the owner. They were complaining about hair on the sheets and pillows. This is a normal complaint but the owner rolled her eyes, looked at me and said... what do they expect, a five star hotel?

I proceeded to the dining room and sat down to watch a little TV. The owner came in with her supper. I wanted chat a bit. She looked at me and uttered; “you want to talk”. I left at that point, only to have the owner shut the dining room door behind me.

As I ventured thorough this place, I discovered the men's bathroom. WOW, what a reek! The smell of urine was intoxicating. The owner tried to explain that men pee all over the place. WOW, ok, this is a person in the hotelier industry. How can you blame men for the state of the washroom?

Anyhow, as I am always ready to help someone out, I explained that washing the floor with bleach would remove the smell. I even offered to go buy the bleach.

I ended up washing the floor, toilets, showers and curtains, urinal and so on. I had to literally soak the floor in a 30% bleach solution. It took over 40 minutes to do this work. Although I managed to reduce the putrid scent the root cause was the urinal itself. I suggested that she needed to have the drain pipe cleaned as the years of use had clogged it and that the scent was actually in the accumulated sludge.

OMG, how can you continue business when the best thing this place has is pretty flowers in the front?

So, let's continue this exploration into the abyss. The place advertises a free pancake breakfast. Well now, this is the fifth day here and I have yet to see anything resembling breakfast! Oh but wait... I do recall one day when there was bread, boiled eggs and bagels available to a Chinese family staying here.

OMG again, now this is race discrimination!

So the story continues with what I perceive the owner as a total control freak. Let me explain...

I don't expect the owner of a hostel to do dishes. It is normal for guests to do their own dishes. This brings another issue which I am sure a health inspector would surely frown upon. Because guests do their own dishes, some of the pots and pans are left with residue.

Now about the control freak comments. The dining room contains a container of coffee. That container was placed somewhere other than its original location. The owner immediately put it back in its place, stating that it was messy.

Can't believe this!

The story continues... I moved the fancy plates to the bottom of the stack as to be able to microwave with the plain plates. I returned that day to find that my moving of the plates had been reversed. WOW, this is a hostel...

It’s a people place and people do what they do. How can I feel comfortable when I have to walk on eggshells?

Check out the pics on Facebook later this week

More on cleanliness… This morning, I decided to wash some basics. Remember that I cleaned the men’s bathroom. Well, I went to sit on the toilet for my constitutional. OMG, there are pee stains on the seat! WOW..

The story continues! So I took an alarm clock from the dining room a few days ago. The owner saw me take the clock into the dorm area. She exclaims... “Do you need an alarm?” On this point my dear friend, I do need to talk about what happened then. A fellow sleeping in the bunk besides me also plugged in an alarm clock. When I went into the dorm, she had unplugged this man’s alarm clock. She turn to me and asked if I had two alarm clocks. I explained that the fellow besides me also had plugged in a clock.

She said. People should not take stuff without telling me.

I was just out having a smoke. I prevented the door from closing by placing a broom handle in the doorway. I am right across this door; smoking. The owner pulled the broom handle, closing the door. I had to go around the front and enter the code (3668) to get in. But wait, the back door is wide open!

On another note, she made a remark which cemented the idea of posting this review. I have three chargers plugged in. (lots of photography equipment) She says something to the effect, what is this? I am charging my batteries I said.

WOW man, I dunno, is this a place for travelers?

Now for the phone. There is a pay phone in this place. It does not work. Have to ask; ask what happened there. Not everyone carries a cell phone, especially when vacationing.

I’ve answered a few job ads. (Remembering that my money is quickly depleting). I used the hostel’s phone number as my point of contact. I can’t even trust that she would relay a message to me.

My traveling friends DO NOT STAY HERE! There are at least two other hostels in this town.

Unfortunately, if you don’t use a credit card, forget about those two. So I ask you, what am I to do? It should be interesting to see what happens tomorrow when I try to use PayPal. Yup, the website clearly states that this hostel takes PayPal.

More on being cheap. I dropped some change on the dorm room floor. One piece of change rolled away. While she was changing some bedding in the dorm room, she noticed that piece of change. That’s probably mine I exclaimed. I asked her if that change dropped from the bed she was working on. No response from the owner. She proceeded to bend over, pick up the piece of change and placed it her jean pocket.

OMG, she just said to me that people have to go out to eat because I am sitting at the dining room table. She just said I should go to my room to work!

OMG, can you believe it?

So about the hostel’s website. There is a section called jobs. It clearly states that the hostel needs help answering the phone and do part time cleaning. Do I dare ask about that? I think not.

I have crisscrossed this continent. NEVER have I run into what I’ve described here. Even a two bit motel is better than this place.

THIS IS A CLEAR CASE OF BUYER BEWARE

Lastly, I am once again in the dining room working on this review. Now I’m hearing her arguing with someone on the phone about the return of a deposit.

My dear readers, THERE ARE BETTER PLACES TO STAY!

That Photographer Guy on Facebook…

This is what you get for try to help somebody who is unable to pay for their room, this individual offered to do some cleaning work around the hostel in exchange for payment of his bed. When I was not happy with his performance, I asked him to leave and as result he wrote these mean spirited comments, obviously to do damage to my business. All I can say is, it is a sad world, when one’s efforts to extend help, generate such unnecessary and ungrateful remarks. The favorable remarks that I have received from many of my guests, far outweigh the ones made by the disgruntled characters that I unfortunately have to deal with.

The place is ok if you want to stay for one night. But if you are planning to stay a long time in Kelowna, don't recommend this place because the male bathroom is gross especially the toilet seats because they looked like they are covered by urine. In addition, there's an urinal right beside the sink without any divider in between. Also in the morning the owner's dog barks, so if you are not a morning person you definitely going to suffer. Moreover, the place smells like a restaurant since there are people cooking in the kitchen constantly. Furthermore, sometimes there was no more hot water when you want to taking a shower. In the end, this place is ok for an one night stay, but definitely not a place you would like to stay for a long trip.

The location is very good. I walked to the lake every day. The bus station is close, within 10 minutes. The room is clean and has lot space. I slept very well at night. The Landard is very helpful with all the information and activities. She even helped me to move out. Three three floors in the building. It is better to stay in upper layer. I live in a drom and I have make a lot of friends. The biggest problem for me is I cannot use the kitchen. But I think she changed the rules now.

My recent stay at Kelowna Okanagan Lake Hostel was comfortable , the room was clean and the owner did her best to make us welcome , since then I have read a review common, that I believe was made three people who were checking out when I arrived. They had made some unreasonable comments and I feel I would like to say a few words about what I saw. When I was in the office with these people I heard them asked the owner not to charge any Tax, which she said she could not do even if they paid cash, which they offer her. They complained about the agent took 10% from their Visa and they demanded the 10% back from the hostel owner even when the owner had deducted 10% from the room rate. They still asked the owner from the agent’s phone no so they could get their 10% back commission back (the owner explanted 5 time to them, they still want the 10% back from the owner)The rate that they paid for the triple room was the same as for a dorm room because a mistake was made by the agent, who under charged them, but the owner honoured the agreement, which was in their favour, the owner offer them upgraded room which were a few dollars more , but they did not want to paid. They said that they got a great deal. These people cause us to wait where the owner had to answer there ridiculous question which owner try very hard to answer which we waited which was not the owner’s fault. I notice that one of these three people looked familiar and I believe that she worked in another hostel where I stayed before; I think the hostel where she worked is trying to affect this hostel’s business by making these comments. As traveler I would prefer to be respectful instead of causing trouble and been unreasonable.
Myself and my 2 friends stay in the same room as these people and regardless of their comments we were charged a more than fair rate for the room, which had very comfortable beds, 2 opening windows and a nice armchair. A storage room (walking closet, not a cave, we don’t have to use it if we don’t want to). The hostel provided free breakfast (DIY pancake) but the owner instead of expecting us to cook our pancake provided bagels, boiled eggs coffee & tea, if we wanted it. The breakfast time of 8-9AM is normal. The dining room was open from 8am-10pm and the door was always open. In my opinion Kelowna Okanagan Lake is good value for money and perfect for travellers.

Good Lucky Maggie
