First of all, this is a gorgeous old building, and Hedy at the front desk was fabulous and charming. It is also located in a historic area with a short(approx 10 minute) walk to the downtown/Inner Harbor area. The parking lot was full, but we managed to get a spot as someone was leaving. What I didn't expect, and it's on me for not researching better, is that there are a ton of stairs to just get inside (and I had a heavy suitcase) and then another long stairs inside to get to your room. No elevator. Also, the hotel is not air-conditioned, and there are no screens in the windows, so we had to have a hot room, or a buggy room. The room was very small and the bathroom sink is right beside the bed in the room. The bed was ok comfortable. If you're travelling lightly and when it's not warm out, then I think the place would be more enjoyable. Just giving the pros and cons.

Thank you for sharing your experience while staying in our petite room. Our cozy petite rooms are smaller than the rest but they are perfect for solo or cozy couples and they are very reasonably priced. On your next stay we would like to invite you to stay in our Queen or King rooms. They have more amenities and are much larger. Thank you so much for choosing to stay with us. Come back anytime! Cheers

My wife and I spent a week visiting Victoria while staying at the James Bay Inn. The hotel was recommended by a friend and we couldn’t have been happier. To be sure, it is an old building and many of the floors are quite unlevel. But, our room was very clean and well cared for each day. The location is first-rate for those interested in walking the downtown (it is about two or three blocks south of the legislature). The restaurant and pub on the lower level are very good. There is no elevator for the three-storey building (we were on the 2nd floor). The lobby is quaint but very pleasant. Coffee provided every morning in the lobby and lemon water all of the time. The room rate encourages longer stays, which worked well for us. It won’t appeal to higher-end travellers, but it was quite fine for us.

We had a great time staying in the heritage house next door upstairs in the large unit. We wanted the experience of having a full kitchen for a few days, and the heritage setting was a bonus. It is actually super quiet in there, not much noise at all from other guests coming and going, and no noise from traffic, just as they said all we heard mostly is the horse carriages going by. The added bonus was the view from the living room, we could see the moonlight and it was peaceful, and to watch the horse carriages go by. It was also super safe to open the upstairs windows too, as it was still warm weather and loved the fresh air during day or night. The kitchen was good, well stocked, I made fresh coffee every morning, and if we wanted we cooked breakfast. The king bed in the bedroom was okay, and a bit creaky, maybe needs some wd40 lol, but it was sufficient and is a really big bedroom with extra tv. The whole unit was pretty roomy, and the only small part was the toilet area close to the wall in the front of it, okay if your short like me haha. The stairs going up were a bit narrow for your shoes to fit on, but the nice gentleman warned us, so we didn't stumble. But other than that the only reason I gave a star less was because upon check out there was a different gentleman and he did not ask how our stay was, just took the keys, and asked if I wanted a paper receipt or email. Staying in the heritage house made it so we barely saw them at the front desk, the check in gentleman was more talkative as we are quiet natured people, and he showed us the unit quick before leaving it to us as he was super busy with other guests, but the check out person had no one else in the lobby, and he still didn't ask how it was, or thanked us for staying with them, its normal practice for them to do that in my travels.

Very helpful and accommodating staff. Nice rooms and lots of character. Everything clean and as advertised. We especially appreciated use of storage area as we arrived with a bike and some dripping wet gear. Definitely think location was a bonus to easy access to downtown with free parking.

Lovely base for a 3-night stay in Victoria. Our room was very comfortable and clean but hot (thankfully a fan was provided). We had a fridge, tv (which we didn't use) and a huge bathroom with a shower cubicle. The WIFI was also very good. We overlooked the carpark which was mainly quiet. The door to our room had quite a gap under it but a draft-excluder had been provided to block out the light.

The hotel itself is in a great location, not far to walk to the harbour area and Beacon Hill Park was just a short stroll away. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We were on the 3rd floor and the receptionist very happily offered to carry our suitcase up to our room. Tea and coffee is provided each morning in the lobby. It would have been nice to have had this throughout the day.

Décor around the hotel is in keeping with its age and sofas are provided along the corridors. Just opposite our room was a balcony that looked out onto the main street. I went out to sit here a couple of times because it was much cooler than our room. It was lovely watching the horse and carriages go by.

After I discovered this hotel about 20 years ago, I have never stayed anywhere else when visiting Victoria. I just returned from a 3 day stay, my first visit since the pandemic. The location of the James Bay Inn is perfect for me. It is a few blocks behind the Parliament Buildings in a quiet historic neighborhood. Beacon Hill Park is nearby and not to be missed. I love that the hotel offers so many types of rooms because I've traveled here with family, with friends, and alone, and they always have the perfect room for my visit. The prices are very fair, and they do not "nickel and dime" or charge resort fees, and even the parking is free! Although the hotel is charming, in the best location, and great prices, what really sets this hotel above all others are the wonderful, friendly employees in both the hotel and restaurant. While you are there, do yourself a favor and eat at the restaurant and pub. Fabulous food with lots of selection which is very appreciated as a vegetarian.
I am already planning my next visit.

I’ve travelled the world but rarely have I been that impressed. From the instant you set foot in this establishment, you feel welcomed, at home and wish you won’t have to leave too soon. True it is an older building but it’s clean, extremely well kept and has tons of charm. The attached pub and restaurant will provide you with the best cost/quality ratio with awesome service. On that front, you cannot ask for a more caring staff. From morning coffee in the lobby to warm greetings every single time you return from your day visits; it’s just PERFECT. Needless to say I highly recommend this inn whenever visiting Victoria, which by the way is located in a quiet neighborhood, at 700m from the Fairmont Empress Hotel and most of downtown action.

I had the pleasure of staying at the James Bay Inn.The rooms are old. But simple and clean with lots of Windows for the morning light. Within walking distance of all that Victoria has to offer.
The restaurant has a limited menu but the food is fresh, good and reasonably priced. Courtney my server was wonderful. The staff at this establishment is friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay here again.

We just returned home after a week long stay at the JBI and I couldn't have been more pleased with our stay. We were warmly welcomed on Christmas Day and the front desk staff were all very friendly and accommodating. Yes, it's an old building with a few quirks, but that just added to its charm! It was nice having the coffee/tea/water in the lobby so that we could interact with other guests (who were often in pajamas!), and I appreciated all of the historical pictures on the walls. It felt like going back to a more simple time in history, and I loved it. Being on the third floor, I also got a great workout every day going up and down the stairs!! I would highly recommend this hotel if you are interested in something a little different and can tolerate stairs, since there is no elevator. It is also walking distance to so many great parts of Victoria - Dallas Road, Beacon Hill Park, The Empress, Fisherman's Wharf, and a 24 hour grocery store is a few minutes down the street. We will definitely stay at the JBI again!

This gem of a hotel is in James Bay, an outstanding neighbourhood for its architecture and history. (Google the James Bay Heritage Walking Tour for a self-guided tour map.) The hotel is a short and pleasant walk away from the Legislature, the harbour, Carr House museum and the enchanting Beacon Hill Park, plus the bus to Butchart Gardens stops just down the street. The staff are welcoming, helpful, and kind to the guests and to each other. Try the breakfast skillets; tasty, ample, and reasonably priced.
